Charities are winners at Souper Bowl

Many people across the nation are anticipating Feb. 3, Super Bowl Sunday, to watch the commercials and musical performances and find out which NFL team will come out on top.

Anticipation is also building for the Souper Bowl of Caring, an annual charitable event held the same day.

On Feb. 3, thousands of youths nationwide will participate in the Souper Bowl by collecting donations for charities in a fight against hunger and poverty.

Participating groups report the amount raised to Souper Bowl headquarters and donate the funds to charity. In 2007, $8,138,475 was raised nationwide.

Golden Harvest Food Bank has been among recipients of funds raised locally since 1991. Last year, it received $10,442 from more than 28 area faith communities that participated in the event.

"The event brings in the funds that we need to help with the number of people we feed through the Master's Table. It helps us to make sure that no one goes hungry," said Carrie Jones, the food bank's events and food drive coordinator.

The Master's Table serves noontime meals to an average of 263 people a day, she added.

Organizations are also being urged to participate in the Feb. 2 Service Blitz, a community-service effort in which youths volunteer with a local charity.
