Lakeview Terrace is getting four-bedroom units, single-family residences and duplexes.

Construction of new homes at Fort Gordon is ahead of schedule.

"We're adding about eight a week," said Harry Bloomer, project manager for GMH Military Housing, a private contractor in charge of the new construction.

The bulk of new homes are being built in a housing area called Lakeview Terrace; 179 new homes are to be built by May.

So far, about 50 houses have been completed in Lakeview. There will be 21 single-family and 158 duplex residences when the time construction is finished.

"This is really nice," said Jennifer Murphy, whose husband, Maj. Michael Murphy, is deployed overseas. "We've lived on post housing before, and there is no comparison."

Mrs. Murphy had lived in a home in Columbia County, but with her husband out of the country she felt safer living on the military installation, she said.

Her spacious four-bedroom home in Lakeview Terrace is also more affordable, she said.

GMH Military Housing began constructing residences at Fort Gordon in May 2006.

"We completed 116 new homes in Olive Terrace. The last homes were completed in early October. Maglin Terrace had 12 new homes; those were completed in August," Mr. Bloomer said.

A new home for the commanding general is being built at Boardman Lake.

In 2008, another phase of the project will be ramped up. The remaining existing residences will receive major overhauls.

"Beginning next year, we will have 75 renovations. From 2009 to 2012, there will be 125 per year," he said. "There are 577 scheduled renovations."

By 2012, all housing at Fort Gordon will be new or will have undergone renovation.
