Olympic plans finalized
at S.C. shooting center

AIKEN - Richard Sherman says he's gearing up for the arrivals of six Olympic shooting teams slated to train at the South Carolina Outdoor Shooting Center next month.

Cynthia Meyers, a member of the Canadian women's double trap team, is set to arrive Wednesday, said Mr. Sherman, owner of the Windsor facility. She will be accompanied by her personal trainer, Dan Carlisle, a former Aiken resident who won a bronze medal for the United States in trap shooting in the 1984 Olympics.

British trap and double trap shooting teams arrive July 7, followed by the Peruvian, Cypriot and Italian skeet teams on July 20 and the Australian men's skeet and double trap teams on July 21, Mr. Sherman said.

``Every day we come in, we're notified of new teams coming to train,'' he said. ``The public is invited to attend all of the teams' training sessions when they arrive.''

Mr. Sherman said the pressure is on now to ensure the center's equipment is up to par.

``We're checking the angles of the target machines, the heights of targets when they're in flight and determining the speed at which the targets fly,'' he said. ``Now comes a tremendous amount of preparation to make sure the machines are working and that everything is up to caliber.''

Mr. Sherman plans to hold a barbecue Wednesday to give the public a chance to meet Ms. Meyers and Mr. Carlisle and watch them train. Dinners will cost $5 and will be available from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

``We've worked really hard up to this point, and now it's all coming to bear fruit,'' Mr. Sherman said.

All Olympic shooting events will be held at the Wolf Creek Shooting Complex in Atlanta.

Men's trap preliminaries and finals start July 21; women's double trap preliminaries and finals are July 23; men's double trap preliminaries and finals are July 24; men's skeet preliminaries and finals are July 26; and men's skeet preliminaries and finals start July 27.
