Italians say Aiken County will help them keep stress down as they prepare for shooting events |
Italian shooters will train in South Carolina
By Rolanda O. Hatcher Peace and quiet - that's what Luca Scribani Rossi was looking for while scouting possible training sites for the Italian Shooting Olympic Team in October.
He thinks he has found it at the South Carolina Outdoor Shooting Center in Windsor.
Mr. Rossi, team manager and a three-time Olympic shooter, announced Friday the Italians are coming to Aiken County.
``What really impressed me was that Aiken has some other things for our team besides a training facility, like fishing and jogging, things that provide tranquility and keep the stress level low,'' he said, adding that the center's shooting ranges, skeet and double trap setups are excellent.
Training for the nine-member team - skeet, trap and double trap shooters - will start in April 1996, prior to the World Cup and the Olympics, both held in Atlanta.
This makes the third team to sign on to train at the Windsor center. The Canadian and Great Britain Olympic teams selected the site last year, and members from both teams are set to visit there in March.
Thomas Nadolski, president of the Aiken Olympic Training Coordinating Committee, said the committee has been in contact with the Italian delegation since last summer. He said the presence of all three teams promises to bring thousands of dollars into the area and give the county's tourism a healthy boost.
``I think having the Italians, the team that is currently best in the sport, is definitely an advantage for us and our efforts,'' he said. ``People like to be around winners, and currently the Italians and British are the winners.''
But Mr. Rossi hoped the center would not attract too many more teams for fear of disturbing the very reason the site was chosen.
``The tension shooters have in preparing for the Olympics is 10 times more than what they have for the World Games. The best thing is to lower their stress to reach the best results during competition,'' he said, adding that activities in the Aiken-Augusta area, as well as the county's distance from Atlanta, will serve the purpose.
But Mr. Nadolski said officials with the U.S. Army Shooting Squad, whose members compose the nucleus of the U.S. Olympic Shooting Team, have expressed an interest in holding informal matches with the three teams at the Win
