Augusta's Olympic Faces

 From competitors to hopefuls to volunteers, Augustans are a part of the 1996 Centennial Games.


Augusta Olympians

In table tennis, Augustans Amy Feng and Jim Bulter will represent United States, while Tim Young will row in the quadruple sculls event.

Two Augustans win Olympic slots:
May 12, 1996
Amy Feng and Jim Butler win at the U.S. Table Tennis Trails to secure berths on the Olympic team.

Despie his father's death, Young will row in the Olympics:
Feb. 24, 1996
``This sounds kind of eerie but I really think he's pushing me, giving me a boost,'' Augsutan Tim Young says, speaking of his late father. ``I don't know if he's holding the other boats back or pushing mine, but he's out there. I can feel him.''


Former Olympians and Hopefuls

Although only a handful of Augustans are competing in the 1996 Games, many others have come before them. Other area athletes tried to make the Atlanta Games, but failed. Some of them hope to make it to the Olympics in Sidney, Australia in 2000.

Donna Howard remaining positive despite defeat:

No, she didn't reach her goal. No, she didn't run her best race. No, she didn't get much sleep the night before. But Donna Howard found it hard to be too upset with herself Monday evening at the Olympic Stadium.

Howard sisters meet at U.S. Olympic trials; Anita falls out of competition:
June 16, 1996
The Howard sisters hadn't seen each other since December. Saturday evening, the Augusta products took turns watching each other sprint into the quarterfinals of the women's 400 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Trials.

Donna Howard hopes to chase sister into Olympics:
July 24, 1993
Donna Howard, a Glenn Hills High School standout and 1993 graduate, has dreams of making the 1996 Olympic track team. She plans to go to the games with her older sister Anita, who was an alternate for the 400-meter relay team in the 1992 Olympic games.

Barcelona alternate from Augusta now looks to 1996:

Augusta's Anita Howard watched the Barcelona Olympics as an alternate on the U.S. track team. She hopes now to be a part of the Atlanta games.

Simpkins jumps to make Olympics:
May 19,1996
Aiken's Charlie Simpkins, the silver medalist in the triple jump at the 1992 Olympics, is hoping to make the Olympic team again.

Gymnast Jay Thornton hopes to vault into Olympics:
May 31, 1992
Jay Thornton, 21, recently won the NCAA vault title. He will need to finish among the top 14 senior gymnasts to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials June 27-30 in Boston.

Augusta boxing hopeful falls short this time:
April 21, 1996
Despite a hometown crowd that cheered and clapped and chanted his every move from the moment he appeared from a tunnel at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center, local boxer Brandon Mitchem couldn't defeat this country's top welterweight at the U.S. Olympic Box-offs.

Derek May's Olympic dreams end in "heartbreaker":

Table tennis champion Derek May loses to back-to-back matches, ended his shot at playing in the Olympics.

Augusta Olympians recall thrill of victory:
Jan. 14, 1996
``It's exciting. It's the most memorable thing I ever did in my life, but, yeah, there were some times when we had a problem finding things to do when we weren't training or competing,'' said Rocky Lane, who boxed for the United States in the 1956 Games in Australia.

Jamacian native ran in three Olympics:
June 4, 1992
Resting her lean, 5-foot, 9-inch frame in a swivel chair, Andrea Bruce yawns and shruggs listlessly while recalling representing Jamaica in track and field during the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympics.


Other Olympic Faces

In addition to athletes, many Augustans are serving as officials and volunteers in the Atlanta Games.

Volunteers get into Games:

With the Olympic Games just 150 miles away, local people have a thousand ways to become involved and give themselves a personal Olympic memory to cherish for the rest of their lives. Three people in Aiken are already in the middle of theirs.

Augustan knocked out by Olympic boxing job:
May 4, 1996
After being in limbo for the past eight months, Al Robinson has been selected as one of the four U.S. boxing referees for this summer's Olympics.

Augusta shooter to be Olympic range officer:
Jan. 14, 1996
``If you can't make the team, be an official,'' chuckled Phil Williams, who has been named a range officer for 10-meter air rifle and air pistol events.
