All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations may be required.


TODAY: A Women's Pistol Shooting Group will meet at 1:30 and 3 p.m. at Carolina Star Gun and Hunt Club pistol range and is open to all female pistol shooters. Beginners are encouraged to attend. Range fee is $15 per shooter. Contact Ed Majzlik at edmajzlik@atlanticbb. net or (803) 641-1742.

SATURDAY: Phinizy Swamp Nature Park comes alive by the light of the full moon during a nocturnal hike from 9 to 11 p.m. Join Academy staff in search of animals such as owls, frogs, beavers and bats by nature's brightest night-light. The hike lasts 2 hours and may cover up to 21/2 miles. Contribution: $5 Academy members, $8 Academy nonmembers. Call (706) 828-2109 to register.

AUG. 17: An NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program session will be held at 1:30 and 3 p.m. at Carolina Star Gun and Hunt Club, Windsor, S.C. This program is open to all pistol shooters. AUG. 19: The Augusta Junior Rowing Team will hold an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Boathouse (101 Riverfront Drive, Augusta). This is an excellent opportunity to meet the coaches, learn more about the sport, and tour The Boathouse. Arrive early -- before 6:30 p.m. -- to see the team rowing on the water. For more information, go to www.augustarowingclub.org. Youths 13 to 18 may practice with the team on a trial basis if interested in joining. No experience is needed. Practices are 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

AUG. 21: A 7:30 p.m. hike through Phinizy Swamp Nature Park's constructed wetlands will offer visitors a chance to hear frogs and other wildlife. The Pfizer Pavilion will be open at 6:30 p.m. for those that would like to bring a picnic dinner. A $3 donation per family is suggested. Advance reservations are not necessary. AUG. 23: An NRA First Step Shotgun Orientation class will be held at Carolina Star Gun and Hunt Club for beginner shotgun shooters. The fundamentals of safety, shotgun operation and marksmanship will be taught. The class will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. A live-fire range session is included. Cost is $70. AUG. 23: An ATA Registered Trap Shoot will be held at 10 a.m. at Carolina Star Gun and Hunt Club. Contact Peggy Crockett at (803) 640-0878 or carolinak80@aol.com for information and registration.

AUG. 30: Savannah Riverkeeper will hold the second annual Paddlefest canoe and kayak race that also includes a homemade raft competition on the Savannah River. The canoe and kayak race will begin at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion at 9 a.m., while the raft competition will start at the Hammond's Ferry Boat Ramp in North Augusta at 8 a.m. Cost is $35 if registered before Aug. 27. SEPT. 6: A workshop on basic nature photography, lens choice, film and composition will be held by Ed Belinski at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Bring any photography equipment you already have. The natural setting serves as a unique backdrop for breathtaking photos. Contribution: $5 Academy members, $8 Academy nonmembers. Call (706) 828-2109 to register.

Sept. 13: Enjoy a crisp fall morning on a walk through the Nature Park as we search for fall migrants as well as arriving winter residents. Many of the birds, known as "confusing fall warblers," are difficult to identify at this time. Join an experienced birder on an adventurous hunt. Cost: $3 Academy members, $5 Academy nonmembers.
