Aranas powers Pacers past Jags

In Aiken, Nick Aranas homered and five USC Aiken pitchers limited Augusta State to three hits as the Pacers beat the Jaguars 7-1 on a rainy Wednesday night .

Aranas led the Pacers with two RBI. In addition to his eighth-inning homer, he had a run-scoring single in the Pacers’ three-run fourth inning.

USC Aiken (30-14) had 12 hits, three by Stephen Carmon.

Augusta State drops to 13-33.


Area teams are ranked in top 8

Augusta State is fourth and USC Aiken is eighth in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.

Augusta State finished the regular season at 31-15, 12-8 Peach Belt Conference while USC Aiken was 25-16, 10-10 Peach Belt .

The teams will play in the conference tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Columbus State.

The rankings are used to determine the region participants from the Southeast Region for the 2012 NCAA Division II Softball Championship.

Eight teams from the Southeast Region will receive an invitation to the NCAA Division II Championship.

An automatic bid is given to the winner of the Peach Belt, the South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas.

The next five highest -ranked teams will earn at-large berths into the championship.


Colts have made their decision

The Indianapolis Colts have decided who to take with the No. 1 draft pick.

They’re just not planning to let the secret out until April 26.

After months of speculation, scouting and scrutinizing, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson finally told reporters Wednesday that the Colts have a plan for their first No. 1 overall selection in 14 years.

Team owner Jim Irsay has repeatedly said the team will choose Peyton Manning’s successor, presumably either Stanford’s Andrew Luck or Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, the Heisman Trophy winner.

Ex-mistress of Petrino resigns

In Fayetteville, Ark., the former mistress of fired University of Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino has resigned from her position with the program, school officials announced.

Jessica Dorrell’s decision to step down as the football team’s student-athlete development coordinator was mutual and there are no immediately plans to re-fill the job, Athletic Director Jeff Long said in a statement.

Dorrell will be paid about $14,000 to settle “all matters between the parties.”


Nadal, Djokovic open with wins

In Monaco, seven-time defending champion Rafael Nadal and top-ranked Novak Djokovic began their clay-court seasons with comfortable wins in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Djokovic opened with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Andreas Seppi, of Italy, while Nadal followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jarkko Nieminen, of Finland.

• The first two players have been confirmed for the London Olympic tennis tournament.

The International Tennis Federation says Stephanie Vogt, of Liechtenstein, and Veronica Cepede Royg, of Paraguay, have been allocated places in the women’s singles.
