Pacers rally to extend streak

In Aiken, Will Tankersley drove in three runs to lead USC Aiken to a 5-3 win over Newberry on Wednesday night.

Ty Barkell had two hits and an RBI for the Pacers
(26-9), who rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win their fourth in a row.

Albert Baur and Hunter Cox had RBI for Newberry (15-24).

• USC Aiken’s Nick Aranas was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week while Tankersley earned freshman of the week honors.

Aranas hit .636 with nine RBI in four games last week. Tankersley hit .368 with a home run and four RBI.

William Gorman had two RBI to lead Paine College to a 6-1 win over Morris College in a rain-shortened game at Lions Field.

The contest was called in the bottom of the sixth inning because of rain.

The Lions improved to a 18-15 on the season.


Minor League Hockey

Ice Bear garners SPHL MVP honor

Knoxville’s Kevin Swider was named the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player on Wednesday.

Swider, who won the award in 2004-05 and 2007-08, led the league in scoring and was third in assists.

Augusta’s Jim Gehring finished second in the voting.

‘Gemologist’ is favorite in Wood

Unbeaten Gemologist was made the 8-5 early favorite in a field of eight entered for Saturday’s $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The 1⅛-mile race is New York’s major prep race before the Kentucky Derby on May 5.

Also entered Wednesday were Alpha, Casual Trick, My Adonis, Teeth of the Dog, Street Life, Tiger Walk and The Lumber Guy. Alpha is the 5-2 second choice.

Gemologist leaves from the No. 6 post and will be ridden by Javier Castellano. Alpha has the No. 1 post and will be ridden by Ramon Dominguez.

Creative Cause is the 6-5 early favorite for the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby.

The gray colt will break from the No. 1 post under Joel Rosario in the field of 10 for Saturday’s 1⅛-mile race at Santa Anita.

Trainer Bob Baffert, recovering from a heart attack he had last week in Dubai, entered three horses as he tries to win his seventh Santa Anita Derby and third in the past four years. He saddled last year’s winner Midnight Interlude.



Lebedev retains title by knockout

In Moscow, Denis Lebedev retained his interim WBA cruiserweight title by knocking out challenger Shawn Cox, of Barbados, in the second round at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall.

The 32-year-old Russian earned his 18th career knockout and improved to 25-1.



Lebanese player posts 113 points

In Beirut, another basketball player joined the elite century club after scoring 113 points in a Lebanese league game.

Mohammad El Akkari led Moutahed to a 173-141 victory over Bejjeh in a Division A league game on Tuesday. He scored 32 3-pointers in 59 attempts and was 40 for 69 overall from the floor. He only had one free throw.

The basketball world governing body Web site said the 6-foot-2 guard is the first player to score more than 100 points in an official league game in any of its Asian national federations.
