USC Aiken extends winning streak to 5
In Pembroke, N.C., Mark Brown scored a career-high 22 points to lead five players in double figures as USC Aiken beat UNC Pembroke 95-80 on Wednesday night for its fifth consecutive win.
Byron Faison added 13, Seth Leonard , Re'mon Nelson and Michael Technow scored 11 each and Kevin Willis had 10 for the Pacers (7-3, 2-1 Peach Belt Conference).
Shahmel Brackett led all scorers with 26 points for UNC Pembroke (5-8, 1-3 PBC).
In the women's game, UNC Pembroke overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to win 55-52.
JaToya Kemp led all scorers with 21 points for UNC Pembroke (7-6, 1-3 PBC) .
Brittany Bowen had a career-high 14 points to lead USC Aiken (5-7, 0-3 PBC), which dropped its third in a row.
- Injured South Carolina forward Dominique Archie , a former Josey standout, had surgery to repair a right knee sprain.
South Carolina basketball spokeswoman Emily Feeney said Archie had his operation on Tuesday, and it was a success.
Archie was a Gamecocks senior who had initially declared for the NBA Draft before pulling his name last spring and returning to the team.
The 6-foot-7 forward hurt himself in South Carolina's fifth game of the season, an 85-70 loss to Miami in the Charleston Classic on Nov. 22.
Archie could petition the NCAA for a sixth season of eligibility based on his injury.
Pacers assistant to join Padres as scout
USC Aiken assistant coach Mark Conner will leave the program to take a position with the San Diego Padres as an area scout.
Conner will be in charge of scouting operations for the Padres in the Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Eastern Indiana areas.
Star females up for horse of year honor
It's a match race between Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta for Horse of the Year.
The star females were the only horses receiving votes for Horse of the Year, while there are three finalists in each of the other 16 Eclipse Award categories announced Wednesday.

American improving during hospital stay
A Utah doctor says American snowboarder Kevin Pearce is improving in a Salt Lake City hospital.
Dr. Holly Ledyard says in a statement Wednesday that Pearce's breathing tube has been removed.
Ledyard says he's slowly regaining consciousness and is able to follow commands.
Pearce suffered a severe brain injury a week ago in Park City while preparing for Olympic qualifying events.
Federer, Nadal roll in Doha tournament
In Doha, Qatar, top-ranked Roger Federer and No. 2 Rafael Nadal each won in straight sets Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals at the Qatar Open.
Federer beat Evgeny Korolev, 6-2, 6-4, and Nadal defeated Potito Starace , 6-2, 6-2.
Dakar Rally stage won by American
In Santiago, Chile, American Mark Miller captured his first stage win in the Dakar Rally, winning the fifth leg to lead a Volkswagen sweep that gave Carlos Sainz the overall lead.
Miller won Wednesday's grueling 300-mile run across the Atacama Desert from Copiapo north to Antofagasta, finishing 5 hours, 6 minutes, 15 seconds.
