Area pair selected to all-tourney team

Two area baseball players recently earned all-tournament honors at the CABA World Series in Charleston, S.C.

Lakeside senior Clayton Miller was selected as an infielder while Evans senior Matt Blume made it as a pitcher.

Both were playing for the CSRA White Sox, coached by South Aiken's Bob Polewski. The team finished third overall in the 18U division.

Pitchers Zach Hayden (Lake-side) and Andrew Faulkner (South Aiken) also were standouts.


Durham scores easy win in Top 60 event

In Greensboro, Ga., Rebecca Durham was the only player to break par in the final round of the Georgia Top 60 Women's Classic and won going away at Reynolds Landing Golf Course.

The St. Simons Island golfer finished at 1-under-par 143 and won by seven shots over Valdosta's Dori Carter (78-72).

First-round leader Tess Fordham , of Metter, followed her 71 with 81 and finished third.

Augusta's Laura Coble shot 76-78 to finish fifth, 11 back of Durham.

In the first flight, Regan Freville shot 83-90 to finish 10th. Fellow Augustan Mary Helen McElreath had 84-85 to finish third in the second flight. Jan Cross , of Evans, shot 100-93 to finish 12th in the fourth flight.

Kanaan is given OK to race in Kentucky

IndyCar star Tony Kanaan has been cleared to return to the track for Saturday's race at Kentucky Speedway after escaping serious injury after his car caught on fire.

- Darlington Raceway president Chris Browning says the track will cut ticket prices on more than half its 62,000 seats for next year's Sprint Cup event.


Former Hawk Jones signs with Pacers

The Indiana Pacers have signed free-agent forward Solomon Jones to a multiyear contract. He spent the past three seasons with Atlanta.

The deal was announced Thursday, and Pacers president Larry Bird says Jones can help the team's interior defense.

Jones averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds last season and shot 60 percent.

Jones played at South Florida and was drafted by the Hawks in the second round in 2006.

- Lamar Odom agreed on a multiyear contract to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, keeping intact most of the roster that won the club's 15th NBA title this summer.

- The Golden State Warriors have acquired guard-forward Devean George and cash from the Toronto Raptors for guard Marco Belinelli.


Davydenko makes it to the quarterfinals

In Umag, Croatia, top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko eased into the Croatia Open quarterfinals by beating Spain's Alberto Martin 6-2, 6-3.

He will face Simone Bolelli, of Italy, who defeated compatriot Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-4.

- In Gstaad, Switzerland, top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka was eliminated in the second round of the Swiss Open, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Thomaz Bellucci, of Brazil.

Defending champion Victor Hanescu also exited, retiring with a stomach illness after losing the opening set against Florent Serra.


Andrews' 911 call released by police

Erin Andrews, the ESPN reporter who was surreptitiously videotaped nude in a hotel room, called 911 on July 22 to complain about paparazzi parked in a car outside her suburban Atlanta home.

In the 911 audiotape, Andrews identifies herself and tells the operator, "I'm all over the news right now," and describes herself as "the girl that was videotaped in my hotel room in the nude."
