Gregory earns berth in the U.S. Amateur

In Woodstock, Ga., Augusta State men's golf coach Josh Gregory shot 64-70 at Capital City Club's Crabapple Course to qualify for the U.S. Amateur.

Gregory tied for second, one shot behind medalist Scott Strohmeyer , of Auburn, Ala., and was one of five players to qualify at the site.

The 109th U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

- Six area players have qualified to play in the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur to be held Aug. 6-9 at Berkeley Hall Plantation in Bluffton.

Bo McCullough , of Aiken, shot 69 at Wyboo Golf Club in Manning, S.C., to lead three local qualifiers. Tom Wyatt , of Aiken, and Blake Hadden , of North Augusta, qualified with 72s.

Kyle Bearden , of Barnwell, shot 69 and David Seawell , of Aiken, shot 73 to qualify at Oak Hills Golf Club in Columbia.

Michael Carlisle , of Aiken, shot 76 at Sanctuary Golf Club at Cat Island in Beaufort, S.C., to qualify.

GreenJackets' win streak ends at eight

In Kannapolis, N.C., the Kannapolis Intimidators scored all of their runs with two outs and beat Augusta 5-2 on Wednesday night, snapping the GreenJackets' eight-game winning streak.

Eduardo Escobar went 3 for 3, with a two-run triple in the second, to lead Kannapolis. He later scored in the second on an error.

The Intimidators also got an RBI single from Drew Garcia in the fifth and a homer by Brandon Short in the sixth inning.

The GreenJackets left the bases loaded in the sixth and stranded 10 runners on the night.

Augusta's runs scored on an error in the seventh.


Three local players to help with camp

Laney graduate Corvey Irvin , drafted this year by the Carolina Panthers, and former Thomson players Jasper and Casper Brinkley will take part in the "Football, Fitness and Fun Camp" today in Augusta.

The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the E.W. Hagler Boys and Girls Clubs, 1903 Division St.


ESPN bans paper's staffers over photos

ESPN has banned staffers from the New York Post from appearing on any of its programming after the newspaper ran photos from the video showing sideline reporter Erin Andrews nude in a hotel room.

The Post published three images from the blurry video.

"While we understand the Post's decision to cover this as a news story, their running photos obtained in such a fashion went well beyond the boundaries of common decency in the interest of sensationalism," ESPN senior vice president of communications Chris LaPlaca said in a statement Wednesday night.

ESPN regularly uses newspaper reporters as guests for analysis and insight on its shows.


Reserves lead way in Dream road win

In Auburn Hills, Mich., reserves Ivory Latta and Angel McCoughtry combined for 42 points as the Atlanta Dream beat Detroit 98-95 in overtime, the latest loss for the defending WNBA champion Shock.

- The court date for Phoenix Mercury all-star guard Diana Taurasi , who faces three drunk-driving charges including extreme DUI, was postponed until Aug. 21.


Mexican boxer dies from injuries in bout

Mexican junior welterweight Marco Antonio Nazareth died at a hospital in Puerto Vallarta, four days after sustaining a brain hemorrhage in a loss to Omar Chavez .

The 23-year-old Nazareth was hospitalized after the fight, in which Nazareth was knocked down in the first round and knocked out in the fourth.
