Stats for basketball are due Wednesday

Individual basketball player statistics are due Wednesdays at 4 p.m., no exceptions.

The Augusta Chronicle will publish a listing of area leaders in the following basketball categories: scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots. Area leaders will be listed in averages per game in all applicable categories.

Nominations for area player of the week for both boys and girls will be due at this time. Please include any applicable statistics to support the nomination. The weekly stats and area players of the week will run each Friday.

Lady Pacers make all-academic team

Three USC Aiken women's soccer players were named to the Peach Belt Conference all-academic teams, the league announced Monday.

Jennifer Goodwin , a junior from Walterboro, S.C., made the second team. Sophomore Nicole Westphal of Springfield, Va., and senior Annie Whitley of Neptune Beach, Fla., were selected to the third team.

- Former Augusta Christian football standout Adam McKinney was named to the Big South All-Conference first team. The starting defensive lineman tallied 50 tackles for the Blue Hose.


Harrington, Ochoa honored by writers

Padraig Harrington , Lorena Ochoa and Jay Haas have been named the 2008 Players of the Year by the Golf Writers Association of America.

The players will be honored at the group's annual awards dinner April 8 in Augusta.

Harrington, who won his second British Open consecutive title and the PGA Championship this summer, received the award for the first time, snapping Tiger Woods ' streak of three in a row.

It is the third consecutive award for Ochoa, who won seven times on the LPGA Tour this year including her second major at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, and Haas, winner of the Senior PGA Championship and the Charles Schwab Cup.


Phillies keep Moyer, add Park to staff

Jamie Moyer agreed to a two-year contract that keeps the 46-year-old left-hander with the World Series champion Phillies.

Philadelphia also confirmed it has a preliminary agreement with Chan Ho Park . All-Star second baseman Chase Utley said he is recovering well from hip surgery and hopes to be ready for opening day.

- The Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year deal with shortstop Adam Everett , who was limited by a shoulder injury last season.

- Outfielder Jason Michaels and the Houston Astros agreed to a $750,000, one-year contract.


Klitschko to defend title next summer

Vitaly Klitschko is set to defend his WBC heavyweight title against David Haye in June in London.

A deal was struck after the British fighter watched the Ukrainian's brother, Wladimir , retain his IBF and WBO heavyweight belts by stopping Hasim Rahman in the seventh round Saturday. Last month, Haye won a five-round TKO over Monte Barrett in his first fight since moving up to heavyweight.


Men's coach to run U.S. women's team

Hugh McCutcheon will coach the U.S. women's volleyball team through the 2012 Olympics after leading the men's squad to a gold medal in Beijing., its first medal in 16 years.

- U.S. women's soccer coach Pia Sundhage received a four-year contract extension through the 2012 Olympics after leading the Americans to the gold medal at this year's Beijing Games.
