Readers to describe their favorite cards

SEC won't be adding an early signing day

Southeastern Conference football coaches who had designs on adding an early signing day will have to wait at least another year.

The league's athletic directors and presidents voted "overwhelmingly" against the proposal on the final day of the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., according to commissioner Mike Slive.

Coaches had voted 9-3 Wednes-day in favor of asking the league to support an early signing period proposed for late November.


Two Jaguars, Pacer on Gold Glove Team

Augusta State's Kevin Owens and Shannon Wilkerson and USC Aiken's Cody McMorris were named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association South Atlantic Region Gold Glove Team.

Owens, a junior first baseman, committed only four errors and had a .992 fielding percentage.

Wilkerson, a sophomore right fielder, had a .982 fielding percentage and had a team-high four assists.

McMorris, a junior outfielder, had a .975 fielding percentage on 158 putouts. He also had four assists.


Loganville captures title in Class AAAA

In Griffin, Ga., Loganville edged Griffin 5-4 in the second game Friday night to win the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA state championship.

Loganville, which eliminated Greenbrier in the quarterfinals, won the first game of the best-of-three series 7-1.

- In Norcross, Ga., Wesleyan doubled up Lovett 12-6 in the second game Friday night to win the GHSA Class AA state title.

Lovett, which knocked out Westside in the quarterfinals, dropped the first game of the best-of-three series 12-0.


Two-time defending champions bounced

In Oklahoma City, Brittany Rogers had the go-ahead bloop double in a four-run sixth inning and Alabama eliminated two-time defending champion Arizona with a 5-1 win Saturday at the Women's College World Series.

Alabama faced another elimi-nation game Saturday night against Louisiana-Lafayette.

In an earlier game, Mary Ratliff hit a two-run double in the ninth inning as top-seeded Florida finally broke through against player of the year Angela Tincher to beat Virginia Tech 2-0.


White to leave Irish to become Duke AD

In Durham, N.C., Kevin White was hired as Duke's athletic director, leaving Notre Dame for a school with an elite basketball team and a football team that has had 13 consecutive losing seasons.


Leslie, Parker head U.S. Olympic squad

Lisa Leslie will have help from Los Angeles Sparks teammate Candace Parker when the U.S. women's basketball team tries to win a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

Also on the team for Beijing are Olympic veterans Katie Smith , Tina Thompson , Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird . style="bold">

Cappie Pondexter , Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles will make their Olympic debuts.
