Third preseason poll ranks Jaguars No. 6

Augusta State earned its fourth Division II national ranking of the preseason, coming in at No. 6 in the nation by the Basketball Times . South Dakota topped the poll.

Senior forward Tyrekus "AJ" Bowman was named to the Top 25 All-American list. The reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year is out indefinitely with a heart condition.

The Jaguars, ranked No. 6 in two other preseason polls and No. 9 in another, face Clemson tonight at 7:30 for their second exhibition game of the season. They beat College of Charleston 65-63 on Thursday.

- USC Aiken senior Mandy Gerolstein was named the PBC's volleyball Player of the Week for the fourth time this year, and teammate Lauren Cedeno , a sophomore setter, was named the league's Specialist of the Week.


Ex-Pacers advance in qualifying school

Scott Brown became the second former USC Aiken standout in a week to advance to the second stage of the PGA Tour's Q-School over the weekend.

Brown, who survived a rough final round at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga., on Sunday, joined Ryan Dillon , who advanced out of Lantana Golf Club in Lantana, Texas on Oct. 26.

Dane Burkhart and Scott Usher , also former All-Americans for the Pacers, failed to qualify.

- In San Marte, Calif., the Augusta State men combined to shoot 5-under-par 365 in the first round of the CordeValle Collegiate at CordeValle Country Club. The Jaguars are tied for sixth.

- Alison Nicholas will captain Europe's Solheim Cup team next year, She succeeds Helen Alfredsson .

Ex-U.S. coach Arena quits Red Bulls post

Former U.S. national coach Bruce Arena resigned as New York Red Bulls coach and sporting director, two days after the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second year in a row.

- Kansas City Wizards forward Eddie Johnson , who made history on June 2 as the first MLS player to score a hat trick in consecutive games, was selected as the league's Comeback Player of the Year.

Revolution defender Michael Parkhurst was picked as the top defender.


Bad air might keep Henin out of Games

In Madrid, Spain, Justin Henin might not defend her Olympic gold medal in Beijing because of concern the city's air pollution will trigger her asthma, the top-ranked women's player said at the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships.

Separate incidents take lives of 2 pros

A pair of Missouri-based bull riders died in separate incidents over the weekend.

Joshua J. "Cody" Brunner of Warrensburg, Mo., died Saturday night after he was stepped on by a bull in a United Rodeo Association event, Topeka, Kan. police said. Zackary Clinton , 17, of Willow Springs, Mo., also died Saturday after being injured at a rodeo in Arkansas, authorities said.

Cop loses in final after winning twice

In Gary, Ind., Seth Giddens , who trains at Greubel's Mixed Martial Arts in Augusta, won two matches by unanimous decision before falling in the championship bout of the Supercop Boxing competition on Saturday.


Handcycling clinic to be held this week
