Lady Jaguars grab 2-stroke advantage

The Augusta State women's golf team holds a two-stroke lead after the first round of the America's Choice Mortgage Lady Jaguar Invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Jaguars enter today's final round at Forest Hills Golf Club at 14-over-par 302. Georgia State (16-over) is second. Teams from Mercer (32-over), Wofford (37-over) and Kennesaw State (45-over) filled out the leaderboard.

Augusta State's Tamara Luccioli, competing as an individual, shot the low round of the day, an even-par 72. She leads teammate Emilie Guery by a shot and Georgia State's Iliska Verway by two.

Sarah Mooney (75), Anna Lindeborg (76), Kristen Bragg (78) and Mary Betancourt (79) round out the Jaguars' scores.


U.S. keeper 'sorry' for critical remarks

In St. Louis, U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo apologized for harsh criticism of coach Greg Ryan during the World Cup in a statement issued about a half-hour before the team's exhibition vs. Mexico.

Solo also decided not to dress for the opener. She said she would not make any further comments beyond the statement.

"I would like to apologize to my teammates, coaches and everyone else adversely affected by my comments," Solo said. "This public apology comes later than it should have, but I hope that does not diminish the fact that I am truly sorry."

Ryan opted for veteran Briana Scurry in the Cup semifinals, a 4-0 loss to the Brazil that led to a third-place finish for the top-rated Americans.


Serena advances to final of Kremlin Cup

In Moscow, Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva advanced to the final of the Kremlin Cup.

Williams beat top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6 (2), 6-1, and Dementieva eliminated fellow Russian Dinara Safina 6-1, 6-0.

In the men's semifinals, defending champion Nikolay Davydenko beat Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 7-6 (6), 6-1, and Paul-Henri Mathieu of France downed Michael Berrer of Germany 7-5, 6-3.

- In Bangkok, Thailand, Venus Williams fell to Flavia Pennetta in the semifinals of the Bangkok Open, losing three set points in the Italian's 6-4, 7-6 (8) victory.

In the final, Pennetta will face Taiwan's Chan Yung-jan, a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 winner over China's Yan Zi in the other semifinal.

- In Stockholm, Sweden, top-seeded James Blake lost in the Stockholm Open semifinals 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3) to Sweden's Thomas Johansson that ended the two-time defending champ's 13-match winning streak in the tournament.

Johansson, a former two-time champion who is not seeded, will face Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in today's final. Karlovic downed Tommy Haas of Germany 6-4, 6-3.

- In Vienna, Austria, top-seeded Novak Djokovic and Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka won semifinal matches and will play for the title of the BA-CA Tennis Trophy.


Bit of Whimsy gets win at Queen Cup

In Lexington, Ky., Bit of Whimsy raced to her first Grade I victory, beating Dreaming of Anna by 2 lengths in the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland.

- In New York, Criminologist took command in the stretch and went on to a 4-length victory over I'm in Love in the $109,100 Athenia Handicap on the turf at Belmont Park.


University's plan for arena falls through

A deal to build a new 7,000-seat arena at Coastal Carolina University has fallen through after the developer failed to meet certain requirements like starting construction at the beginning of this month.

The Coastal Educational Foundation, a nonprofit group that supports the university and owns the tract where the arena was to be built, said the developer also failed to meet at least 17 other requirements in its lease.
