USC Aiken sixth in Presbyterian event

In Clinton, S.C., three-time defending NCAA Division II champ USC Aiken is sixth after Monday's first round of the Presbyterian College Intercollegiate at Mus-grove Mill Golf Course.

The Pacers, ranked ninth in Division II, shot 313 and are 15 shots behind Presbyterian, which shot 298 and leads Georgia College and State by two.

Casey Thompson shot 77 to lead USC Aiken and is tied for 16th, six shots behind leader Rob Varner of Presbyterian. USC Aiken teammates Jeff Goff and Roberto Diaz shot 78s and are tied for 25th. Kevin Grady shot 80 and is tied for 39th, while Matt Giftos shot 81 and is tied for 44th.

- In Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., the Augusta State men shot 303 and are tied for ninth place after two rounds of the John Hayt Collegiate at Sawgrass Country Club.

The Jaguars are at 610 overall, 16 shots behind first-place Alabama (594).

South Carolina is 14th in the 15-team field at 622.

Jamie Miller shot 77 and is the low man for Augusta State, tied for 27th at 152. Keith Guest (75) is tied for 33rd at 153, Tarik Can (77) is tied for 36th at 154, Mitch Krywulycz (74) is tied for 52nd at 157 and Janne Kaske (82) is tied for 59th at 159.

Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson shot 68 and is the leader at 141.

Baker Elmore shot 76 and is the low man for South Carolina, tied for 36th at 154.

- In Miami Lakes, Fla., the Augusta State women shot 313 and moved up one spot to eighth in the Papa John's Collegiate Championship at Don Shula Golf Club.

The Lady Jaguars are at 640 through two rounds, 19 shots behind first-place Lousiville.

Augusta State's Emilie Geury shot 79 and is tied for ninth at 156. Amanda Smith shot 75 and is tied for 25th at 160. Anna Lindeborg shot 81 and Patti Hogeboom shot 80. Both are tied for 41st at 163. Tamara Luccioli shot 79 and is tied for 55th at 168.

College Baseball

Pacers up to 14th, Jags debut in 19th

USC Aiken jumped 10 spots to No. 14 in the new Collegiate Baseball Magazine Division II Top 30 coaches poll released on Monday .

Augusta State (8-3, 2-1 PBC) debuted at No. 19 this week.

USC Aiken (7-2, 3-0 Peach Belt Conference) swept a three-game series with North Georgia to open conference play last weekend. The Pacers have been ranked in 34 consecutive polls, dating back to March of 2005.

USC Aiken plays today, against Brevard College at 6 p.m. at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

Augusta State faces Belmont Abbey today at 2 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

High School Wrestling

Burke, Greenbrier athletes in top six

Multiple wrestlers from Greenbrier and Burke County high schools placed at the Georgia High School State Tournament held last week at Gwinnett Arena.

In Class AAAA competition, Greenbrier's Louie Shearer placed sixth in the 125-lbs. weight division and Rick Stahman came in at fifth in the 215-lbs. division.

In Class AAA, Burke County's Marcus Stephens placed fourth in the 125-lbs. weight division and Mitchell Davis earned a fifth-place finish in the 135-lbs. division.

Horse Racing

Teuflesberg springs upset in Southwest

In Hot Springs, Ark., Teuflesberg held on down the stretch to win the Southwest Stakes, the first of Oaklawn Park's big Kentucky Derby prep races.

Heavy-favorite Hard Spun finished in fourth place after winning his first four races.

Teuflesberg outlasted Officer Rocket in the stretch.


Hatton gets former champ in June fight

Ricky Hatton will return to Las Vegas to fight former lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo of Mexico at the Thomas & Mack Center on June 23.
