White House won't release bin Laden death photo

  • Follow Osama bin Laden

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has decided not to release death photos of terrorist Osama bin Laden, he said in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," amid concerns that the gruesome image could prove inflammatory.

Obama's decision was reported on the CBS News Web site Wednesday after the president sat for an interview with the news magazine program.

Releasing graphic images of bin Laden's corpse after his shooting in a U.S. raid on his compound could have dispelled doubts that bin Laden is indeed dead. The worry, though, was that it would feed anti-U.S. sentiment.

The president made his decision as the Navy SEALS involved in the daring raid in Pakistan arrived in the U.S. for debriefing, and U.S. officials began to comb through the intelligence trove of computer files, flash drives, DVDs and documents that the commandos hauled out of the terrorist's hideaway.

Obama prepared to visit New York City on Thursday to lay a wreath at Ground Zero and visit with 9/11 families and first responders.

It is in times like these
Unpublished

It is in times like these that a line is drawn between critical thinkers and those who get swiped by media crap-storms; Between those who understand the complexity of a situation and those who’d rather not know; Between those who comprehend the underlying motives of the elite and those who go outside chanting “USA! USA!”.

In this case, why should we care if Ben Laden is dead or not? Is he really dead? Did he die nine years ago? Who really knows? We’re living in an era of artificial, fully staged, media-generated events. Why was Bin Laden’s death announced on the evening of May 1st? Because it was the required sacrifice of the “most magical time of the year”, which was launched with the Royal Wedding.

You really think it would

You really think it would matter if he released them??? Mr. Obama can't even get some people in this country to accept his birth certificate! Even if they do show the photos it won't be good enough for some people. They'll cry some conspiracy theory of how it's a photoshopped picture... I don't think they would be happy unless they could personally inspect the body. I personally couldn't care less whether or not they release the photos... I don't plan on looking anyways.

I am in no way, shape or form

I am in no way, shape or form a fan of this President's policies.

I have to date been thankful of the recent acomplishment of our military with the support of this President. However, as far as how things have been handled since the death of Bin Laden, in my opinion, it has been deplorable. The haste to release information, the inacurate information that has been released, the continued changing of the story, etc. are all very troubling. When you watch one channel and see the head of the state department praising Pakistan for their help and turn the channel and see the department of defense stating that Pakistan was not helpful and actually could have hindered the situation, you have to wonder who is controlling the flow of information.

There was no need to rush this information to the media or public. There was no need for much of it to have ever been released, especially intel such as how we located him to begin with. This is a very naive administration and lacks great skills in many areas.

However, I am very thankful of the proper decision this President and his administration made to send in the Navy Seals. And, I am also glad that now our President has decided there is no need to show the photos.

There will always be those who don't believe or think it is some conspiracy - who cares...the President producing the photos will never change their mind just as many still believe that President Bush was behind 9-11 and that many of the photos were fake, etc. - There are and will always be idiots on both sides.

There is no need to release these photos to then be used as marketing tools for terrorits groups. Sure, they will continue to hate us either way but why should we play into their needs or help them to bring more people to their cause. If not releasing the photos only helps to keep a few less people from becoming sympathetic to their cause then it is a good thing and President Obama is making the right decision.

There has never been a more

There has never been a more wishy washy administration in American history. Say what you mean and mean what you say obama. Stop waffling full time!

Honestly, they've known about this raid for 5-6 months. You'd think the losers would have all the details worked out by now.

P.S. This wishy washiness comes from having a President who is unqualified and from having a staff who doesn't know what they are doing. Totally and completely inept - the whole lot of them.

Great!!! decision from the

Great!!! decision from the Commander-and-Chief not to release photos. He once again proved he is above all of the craziness and nonsense out there. Our nation needs his direct and unwavering leadership now more than ever. I hope he can continue to do that which is right in the face of hostile and negative comments such as the ones seen here. In the end he will win knowing that he led this country in the most professional and effective manner possible, despite the opposition displayed by so many.

Another great decision by out

Another great decision by out President!! There are many American soldiers on the battlefield fighting to keep America safe. American embassies are across the globe. How will releasing these horrible pictures enhance or serve their cause? Those who are dense enough to engage in conspiracy theories are welcome to do so. What does a picture really "prove" anyway?? It is the duty of the President of the United of America to make critical decisions that will keep America safe. President Obama has just done that. Bin Laden is DEAD. Period! Time to move on!

Republic71, even if I did

Republic71, even if I did list all of the positive things he has done, it would not matter to you. Your mind was made up a long time ago. He knows that, I know that, and I think you might be the only one that doesn't know that. So why waste my time?

RunningMan...well, my mind

RunningMan...well, my mind isn't made up and I try to post positives when I see them on this administration. I agree with his decision on this and think it is the right one. I belive he made a very tough decision to give the go ahead on the mission which could have turned out very badly so again, I gave him credit as do many others. However, he along with his administration have made many poor decisions in this incident and along they way. He simply appears to be in way over his head on too many issues and situations because he was elected to a position he was not ready for. At the same time, Sarah Palin isn't ready for such a position either and neither are plenty of others on both sides.

As far as this direct and unwavering leadership you speak of it simply isn't there...this administrations changes their minds and their talking points often more than once during the same day. I do believe Obama cares, thinks he is doing what is best, etc. and is trying but his policies and decisions along with that of Pelosi, Reid, Frank, etc. overall have been bad for America, our economy, our national security, etc. This has not been a transparent administration nor have they done anything to win the hearts and minds of ANY other country since taking office. We are seen around the world as being weaker with a very unstable economy that is in great debt. Yes, Bush did contribute to these problems, no doubt. But, the Obama administration has greatly increased spending to no avail, spent more in 2 years than Bush or Clinton did in 8 years, taken away interrogation techniques needed by the CIA to ingather the exact type of information the brought us to Bin Laden, lowered our financial rating within the world, and the list goes on...

I would have liked them not

I would have liked them not to make any announcement. If they could have staged the attack not using helicopters, but using some ruse pointing at a rival, and then burn down the compound -- leaving burned papers, computers and discs - worthless ones.  This would have given us time to analyze the intel and identify the collaborators in Pakistan as well as other leaders/followers/financiers in other countries before they bolt, or hide weapons and funds.  Now they know we have it and the scramble to move material, money, and people have a head start.

My metaphorical hat is off to the way ST6 executed the plan.  It was a beautiful symphony of controlled violence following a well scripted piece of music.  I bow to acknowledge their incomparable bravery and deadly skills.

As to photos:  I've seen enough death and gore to last for several lifetimes. No positive realistic probative point is made by revealing them -- only downside consequences. Why yield to the morbid curiosity of a few when it would offend millions of peaceful & faithful Muslims?
