Dependence on government is crippling American initiative

  • Follow Opinion columns

The nation’s debt has tripled in recent years. Meanwhile, real working people in the same economy have been paying down debt in the same time span.

What is the difference? The working among us, out in the real world, know that debt is bad, and too much debt is very bad! In the world of love for big government and big control of all of our lives, there is no such thing as too much debt or too much government control.

The United States has gone from the Greatest Generation, the winners of World War II, to the Entitlement Generation. What is my evidence? One in seven Americans takes food stamps, triple what it was only a few years ago. The number of people receiving Social Security disability has blossomed as well.

Fifty-two percent of children born today are born to households using WIC, a food assistance program for poor families with children ages 5 and younger.

Locally, the people of Richmond County must be very proud of their official status. The federal government has judged that the people in that county are so universally needy that every child in their school system automatically receives free breakfast and free lunch. Some even get fed during the summer when schools are closed.

And the Augusta Commission have debated if they should declare parts of their community officially a “slum” so they can go to the federal government candy store for some money.

MEANWHILE, THE number of people working (the labor participation rate) is the lowest it has been in the past 35 years. Fewer than two-thirds of us actually work for a living. Eight million people have quit looking. Otherwise, the unemployment rate would be 15 percent or more.

The Affordable Care Act is the final blow to a fragile economy. A majority of new jobs are part time. Those who have jobs are having their hours cut. Hospitals and medical practices are laying off workers from top to bottom at a rate higher than ever before. Doctors are retiring early, and many in the health insurance business are simply quitting because of the complications of their jobs and the bleak future presented by the 100 percent takeover of health care by our federal government.

The smallest group plan premium increase I have found among businesses is 36 percent. Some are increasing in the 60 percent range. I don’t know of a single decrease in premiums. Many retirees in both government and private sectors are having their health benefits cut or their premiums increased.

It is not the fault of the insurance companies that they have to raise insurance rates. In the past, people bought insurance to prevent financial disaster in case they got expensive illnesses. Under this new environment, people can wait until they get colon cancer or need heart bypass surgery, and then buy the insurance they need. They need only to sign up during an enrollment period. What if the automobile insurance companies were made to sell auto insurance to people who could buy it right after they wrecked their cars? Perhaps I shouldn’t ask that. This may be a way that new entitlements are created. Doesn’t everybody deserve reasonably priced automobile insurance?

AS IF THE CURRENT administration needed it, they are proving their operational incompetence by not having the website capacity to handle the small number of inquiries. The number of attempts to get on to the website to shop through the exchanges has been a disaster to the administration. They trotted out and said that 5 million had attempted to shop, only to pull that number back significantly within hours.

Gas and other energy prices are higher than ever and are going to increase, and we still have no national plan for becoming energy-independent. The Keystone Pipeline; licensing of shale production in more states; and bringing back offshore drilling to pre-Obama levels would begin to end the price increases – but the Democrats in Congress and our president likely will prevent these from developing.

The U.S. debt is three-fourths of our gross domestic product. Greece’s is 100 percent of its GDP. We are only 10 to 15 years from looking like bankrupt Greece! We are on the path to a national financial train wreck. Only a few people see the writing on the wall.

As a society we need to face the harsh reality that we need to create a better environment for freedom and prosperity. Our citizens need to take care of themselves more and stop looking for the government to pay for food stamps, jobs, enforced employer and government benefits and a nanny-state style of control over everything in our day-to-day lives.

Jeff Annis wrote - "Our citizens need to take care of themselves more and stop looking for the government to pay for food stamps, jobs, enforced employer and government benefits and a nanny-state style of control over everything in our day-to-day lives.

How about this - Million-dollar corporations and the Wall Street greedy need to take care of themselves and stop looking for the government to pay for subsidies, tax breaks, bail-outs, and kickbacks - and end their nanny-state style of control over Congress and control of proposed legislation that affects all citizens.

This the real welfare.

How about your millionaire politicians? How about your president who came to the White House as a 1 millionaire and now has 11 million? Where is he going to be in 3 more years?

Better question, where are you and I going to be?

It's not, it's understanding the reasons why the capitalism instituted, free market trickle down con, has the rewards of the labor done going to the top and not shared with respect with those creating and not crunching bottom lines which bring on added needs!! It's saying one supports but refuses to sacrifice themselves, like the six years of rubber stamping on the countries credit card before two wars of choice, cheering the abandoning of missions of why our military was sent after 9/11 so quickly, with and after on other issues and refusing to pay those bills!

The monies budgeted, already long term insufficient, are mostly borrowed, that's what deficits, and under funding, cause!! Which in turn cause more costly problems!!

After that second war started. The wars, I guess, we thought would be free, don`t worry about it, civilians. Go about your business." 23 May 2013

Specsta's comment has truth on its side. However, it is not correct to label it "correction." Better would be "addition." Corporate welfare is immoral; but so is individual welfare. They are equally evil.

taxes our corporations
because you can't tax a corporation

Government has made

Large Businesses and 30+% of the population dependents.

But where does the $$$$ come from that they spend?

Guess who ends up paying the bills.

They can't tax us more without a revolt, so they run up deficits and sell IOU's to other countries.

"Guess who ends up paying the bills.

Some of you know my story as it relates to "gov. give-away". Instead of food-stamps, which are not working in many states, welfare, and Medicaid, I am on Soc. Sec. Dis. and Medicare. I worked for 19 years before my mental disorder allowed me to start acting in a very negative, agressive manor toward my co-workers. Therefore, I felt it best to get disibility rather than resk someone getting hurt. For any of you that may not know of this condition, it is called Intermittent Explosive Disorder. I relate this because some don't believe that I have a good reason for being on Soc. Sec.

Now to relate this to the article. I think it is written in The Bible, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, but teach a man how to fish and he will eat for a life time." Our gov. and "the bleeding hearts" have made the first part of this SOOO wide-spread that it will be very difficult, if not impossible to make the second part come true!!

The productive people in this

The productive people in this country is declining and are forced to subsidise the ever increasing numbers of leeches.

Obama and his crew of thugg democraps have put into motion the economic destruction of this country.

The best advice to those who have liquid assets is to get them off shore as soon as possible.

For the rest of us, well as Captain Smith of the Titanic said when he knew all was lost, "it's ever man for himself."

"The nation’s debt has tripled in recent years. Meanwhile, real working people in the same economy have been paying down debt in the same time span"

THIS COUNTRY has got to cut back IN EVERY DEPT.!! There are more free-bee benefits in this country than ever before!! With all due respect, our President and First Lady have started this free-bee lunch plan to more and more kids than ever before!! DUH.....And they ask the question where ALL OF THIS debt comes from, I say DUH AGAIN!! I heard a woman ask the question at a school board meeting, "When is society going TO STOP being the parents to kids we don't even know??" If this offends my fellow liberals, THEN PERHAPS you can explain this and, most importantly, solve it!!

It's all very simple:

The more you increase the number of suckers/moochers on the teats of the Uncle Sugar Pig the more pig farmers (statists) scream for a bigger pig with more teats to handle more suckers/moochers.

I know this is not a popular thing to say, BUT can we at least agree that if our generation doesn't do something about this national debt, our kids and grandkids are going to be hit square in the head with it!! I see one, of just part, of the solution is for our generation TO GIVE UP these tax refunds that we get as a result of returning a tax report. As I said, NOT POPULAR! I believe that if ALL OF US knew we had to forego this return, I believe this would be a somewhat painless way to help our kids' futures!! I fore one do not like when people who don't even pay taxes get a large refund back just based on their family size. My family happens to be one of these, BUT do you think that I am going to turn this refund down?? Even though I am medically crazy, I am not crazy enough to give up this tax refund, BUT I would if I knew EVERYONE had to!!

There were almost riots yesterday when the Food Stamp computers didn't work for a while. Imagine what is going to happen when the whole system collapses.......maybe as early as next week.

And have you ever noticed there is always talk about Social Security and Medicare running out of money but there is NEVER talk about WELFARE running out of money. Well don't kid yourself......when WE run out of money, Y'ALL run out of money.

I knew this already, BUT how do you go about stopping it without being seen as a child hater?? The government claims that it can not get into the "business forming" catagory, because it would be unfair to the private sector! So what?? The gov. sees it as being fair to the tax payers to just hand-out billions of dollars and expect NOTHING in return??!! I used to be against the idea of putting welfare recipients on the same jobs as are currently done by illegals. But what else is left?? I say that tax payers can not go on FOREVER losing tax dollars and getting NOTHING IN RETURN!!

JimS It isn't a con, trickle

JimS It isn't a con, trickle down capitalism works! As I often point our, Home Depot spanned over 1,000 millionaires! The reason the profit goes to the owners is because they risk the capital. Say I open a wedget company and it cost me $100,000.00 over the cost of assets. Then I hire you at $15.00/hr. If my wedget company goes belly up your out a $15.00/ hr job, I'm. Out $100,000.00.

A few points.

Much federal aid is tied to the percentage of children receiving "free" lunches; therefore, if a district such as Richmond County decides to make everyone "free" it gets more federal aid. If people can't feed their children with all the government handouts they should have them taken away and put into state or private run orphanages.

Free market capitalism has increased the standard of living and freed more people than ANY OTHER system in history. If someone thinks that is not true I would like for them to identify another system and justify their position with something other than "feelings".

History demonstrates that

History demonstrates that this essay writer is simply wrong.

In 1996, the Welfare Reform Act was put into law. This was an historic DECREASE in taxpayer subsidized poverty assistance. If the essay writer were correct, this DECREASE in the availability of "dependence-creating" assistance would have produced a DECREASE in people dependent on subsidies.

It didn't.

If we continue to attribute the wrong causes to poverty in this country, then we will continue to achieve nothing in decreasing its occurrence. I suspect part of the reason that some pretend dependence is the problem is to deflect the shame of those who have the power to effect positive change but do nothing.

Dee, free market capitalism has not existed since the Standard Oil days, if it even existed then. Except in very limited cases of local and low barriers-to-entry markets, our global economy is an oligopoly, where every major sector of our economy is dominated by only a few major players.
