'Art of Chocolate' helps abused kids

This article is a must-read if you eat, pray and love chocolate. The 17th annual Art of Chocolate – Friday, Oct. 12, at Savannah Rapids Pavilion – is all that and more.

This fund-raiser for sexually abused children will allow you to have an awesome night of fun, all while helping to provide free services to the smallest victims. You can eat your way through the culinary artistry provided by Chef Cal Berry – he is amazing.

Ever prayed for a night filled with the most decadent desserts? Prayers answered. The area’s greatest dessert chefs donate their expertise and time to creating the best and most unique desserts – and best of all, you get to vote on the winner. You will love the entertainment we have for you, such as the sounds of the Toasters, a local band of professionals who can keep your feet moving; live ballroom dancing; a live artist; and fabulous art donated by local artists for the auction.

THE ART OF the “green box” is displayed with a beautiful selection donated by Windsor Jewelers for our raffle. The night is directed by the handsome Brad Means, a longtime supporter of CEI. The event is filled with many long time Child Enrichment supporters, and we are looking to make new friends. Come and be a part of this awesome fund-raiser. The donation is only $75 for a night of relaxed fun, great dining and fabulous desserts.

I want to share why this event is so important to us.

Child Enrichment Inc. is a nonprofit organization that has served local children who have been abandoned, abused, neglected and sexually abused. Honestly, I am not sure why more people don’t support this critically important mission – saving children, rescuing them from abusive homes and helping them to recover from torture and horrible abuse.

Our director tells us that people cannot handle the truth – believing that they can protect their own children, or are unable to accept the idea that children are even abused. Child Enrichment believes that, eventually, responsible citizens will take control of protecting most children from sexual abuse. Our prayer is that it happens sooner than later, because some of them can’t wait until tomorrow.

The state cannot completely protect children. It is up to us. The statistics are difficult to accept, but there is good news. Because of the generosity of local donors, Child Enrichment provided life-saving services, free, to 673 children and 385 nonoffending parents last year alone, and more than 17,500 abused children have received our services, always free, since 1978.

CHILD ABUSE is real, every day and right here in the CSRA. Very few cases make the news, but you have read about some of the worst. The good news is that children can and do recover from abuse, even the most torturous abuse, if they get help. Child Enrichment provides free therapy – trauma-focused, cognitive behavioral therapy for child victims of abuse.

Your help is needed. By attending a wonderful event such as Art of Chocolate, you will be helping local children who are victims of abuse. There are many other ways you can help. We sponsor a Santa Party for local foster children; Cookin’ for Kids in the spring; and you always can become a volunteer or donor. Learn more by visiting our website: www.ChildEnrichment.org.

Helping abused children to survive and thrive is easier than you may think. Simply buying a ticket to Art of Chocolate is a start. Will you help to provide a voice for these children?

(The writer is Art of Chocolate’s chairwoman, and president-elect of the Child Enrichment Board of Directors.)

NOW, THIS is a good cause... Child Enrichment

NOW, THIS is a good cause... Child Enrichment has served abused children from right here... for decades. In Augusta we are very fortunate to have excellent charities and causes. The writer wonders: " Honestly, I am not sure why more people don’t support this critically important mission – saving children, rescuing them from abusive homes and helping them to recover from torture and horrible abuse." I wonder that too. Art of Chocolate is a great event... and there are few causes which are more important than helping abused children.

I totally agree that support

I totally agree that support of abused children is a worthy cause but maybe there hasn't been more support becaue not much is publicized about this, or at least nothing I am aware of. I don't believe I have heard of Child Enrichment, Inc. and have never heard of Art of Chocolate event but it is something I do believe I will be investigating to see where I can contribute either time or monetary assistance. Nothing more precious than a child, at least in my view.
