With all the debates and the cable news analyses of the Republican candidates, many folks don’t realize that there is a Democrat running in a primary for president. His name is Barack Obama.
The continued attacks on Obama to make Republican candidates attractive to right-wing voters gives many Americans the shivers. Instead of plans for the unemployed, we hear about the president’s religiosity; instead of plans to prevent outsourcing, we hear about the evils of contraception; instead of foreign policy, we hear about invasive sonograms and abortion.
On the other hand, we have a president who has maintained his presidential dignity in the face of lies and distortion, who has aided this country not by negativity but by diligence and hard work that demand he be returned to office.
DESPITE ALL THE Republican unsubstantiated rhetoric, 3 million new jobs have been created, and the unemployment levels are steadily dropping. This is not because the unemployed are dropping out of the work place, but because, as one example, the automotive industry, which was rescued by Obama’s bailout, saved 1.5 million jobs.
Right here in Richmond County, his stimulus package provided the school system with more teachers and smaller student classroom sizes; funds for road repair; and vital funding for renovation of homes for middle-class and working-class families.
While the Tea Party tries to diminish women’s rights, Obama and the Democrats in Congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which provides women with equal pay when they perform the same jobs as men. In terms of pay, Obama fought for and won the payroll tax reduction for millions of workers, including extending unemployment insurance and appropriate Medicare compensation of physicians.
A HISTORIC FIRST for this president was the legislative fight for and passage of Affordable Health Care for Americans Act, unlike previous presidents who had attempted but failed to provide affordable health care for the average person. When the law becomes effective, all Americans will have the right to health care that most Western countries provide right now. What a boon to the economy of this nation – reducing the cost of providing for the sick and providing free examinations, preventing illness before it starts.
The president also has been successful in another area where predecessors have failed. The repealing of “don’t ask, don’t tell” in the armed services allows all citizens, no matter their gender preference, to proudly serve the country while filling critical military needs.
President Obama has made this country safer from terrorists than ever before. With great courage and intelligence, he ordered the slaying of the No. 1 terrorist, Osama bin Laden. This terrorist, in one horrendous act, killed thousands in the destruction of the Twin Towers on 9-11. The fact that President Obama wasted no opportunity to have this act carried out by Navy SEALs speaks loudly of his astuteness and determination.
TRUE TO HIS promise, our armed forces are out of the war in Iraq that was initiated by the previous president and was ill-thought-out with no endgame. This is no small accomplishment for which our country should be grateful.
The president’s appointment of Hillary Clinton as secretary of state was a brilliant move, as she has impressed the world with her nonstop diplomacy and peace overtures without boots on the ground. Libya and the resolution of its “Arab Spring” is a good example.
As stated before, President Obama has more than proved himself as he moves our country forward by growing the economy, aiding the working class, keeping our country safe and showing what family values really mean with Michelle, Sasha and Malia by his side. He more than deserves our vote!
