Media simultaneously savaged Sarah Palin, protected Barack Obama

  • Follow Opinion columns

Sarah Palin was the only major party candidate on the 2008 ballot with executive experience.

Palin was the chief executive of a state canvassing more than 586,000 square miles -- Texas has 269,000 -- that borders Canada and Russia, with a budget of $6.6 billion. Approximately 85 percent of Alaska's budget hinges on oil production. Her resume includes being chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Soon after becoming governor, Palin sold the state's private jet for $2.1 million that her predecessor purchased and billed Alaskans for. She defeated that sitting Republican governor in a primary.

Palin used the line-item veto to quash $260 million of Alaska's proposed budget for capital projects -- pork -- to which the Anchorage Daily News said, the cuts "may be the biggest single-year line-item veto total in state history."

The media never reported her stewardship. It did, however, deploy a brigade of investigators to Alaska to search for proverbial dirt, finding none. They attempted to create a national controversy over the origins of her campaign clothing. The Republican national Committee purchased designer clothes for her since she is neither ostentatious nor vain, and did not possess $600 shoes or $2,500 dresses as Jill Biden and Michelle Obama have long demanded.

PALIN'S WARDROBE was more vital to the selection of the free world's leader than the Democratic nominee's history and close personal relationship with Bill Ayers, Larry Sinclair, Donald Young, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and others that the media spun away, if reported at all.

President Obama lived part of his life as Barry Soetoro, and reportedly used more than a dozen Social Security numbers. Obama claims to have been born in Hawaii of two U.S. citizens -- we know they were not -- but has refused to prove he is a natural-born citizen.

He and his campaign has spent approximately $2 million fighting to keep this matter out of court. But Palin's clothing and foreign policy experience took center stage.

For a certified copy of vital records, according to the Hawaii State Department of Health, one must submit an application and pay "$10 for the first copy of each certificate, and $4 for each additional copy of the same certificate ordered at the same time."

Granted, spending $2 million and counting, vs. filling out an application and cutting a check for $10, may seem normal for Democrats. But the media harangues the Palins to this day, yet refuses to report truth regarding Obama.

Moreover, three years of Obama's life are unaccounted for. The media fix was in from day one. For confirmation, compare the media's treatment of an executive seeking the office of vice president to its treatment of a U.S. senator of 138 days seeking the office of president.

The horrible shootings in Arizona prompted the media and others to literally blame Palin for an unstable individual's actions. Soon after that tragedy, on Jan. 23, the Missoula Children's Theater in Montana was performing The Mikado . The director added a scene calling for Palin's beheading.

I once thought that the media has a seething hatred for this woman. Now I am convinced that those who are obsessed with her demise are afraid of her resolve and character, which causes her to be a positive role model.

PALIN HAS A STRONG executive record of nonpartisan governance and doing what she believed to be right, from which Alaska benefitted, thereby making her a threat to those who make their living and receive gratification by controlling others.

She has endured some of the most heinous media attacks in history, and I ask: Why? What has she done to warrant any of it? Who in all of recorded history has received such unwarranted or warranted venomous attacks? Eliot Spitzer gets a television program. Jim McGreevey is forgotten. Ted Kennedy is idolized. Sarah Palin? Demonized. What is the media's true objective?

Media reports labeled her "unqualified." This mother of five, bottom line, is a tough-as-nails, no-nonsense, commonsense American who has governed honorably America's largest state.

Palin hunts and brings food home, and with four generations of Heaths and Palins, prepares the bounty for storage.

Palin is pro-life, and proved it when she did not murder her unborn son via an abortion after doctors claimed he has Down syndrome. She walks her talk, and the Sarah Palins of the world rely on themselves, not government programs, and their happiness and prosperity is not mandated by Washington, D.C.

She is a strong woman with convictions and a belief in the U.S. Constitution, and the American will and spirit of the Founders that cannot, and will not, be broken -- regardless of what the bitter media sends her way.

The media makes fun of Palin

The media makes fun of Palin because she is stupid(meaning she lacks intelligence) Doesn't matter what party she belongs to, hwat she has done in the past politically-she is still stupid. .She, for one thing, has no knowledge of fundamental history. That's definitely a big negative for the presidentcy

A) I saw no mention in this

A) I saw no mention in this column claiming that she is perfect.
B) She has hunted prior to her television show, and yes, she took more than one shot to bring it down, but she did not edit it. She is comfortable with who she is. Governor Eliot Spitzer's history is rewarded with a sweet deal - look at her treatment and history and then look at Eliot's.
C) The column is about how the media treated a Governor versus its treatment of Obama.
D) Obama has blundered every bit as much as Palin has, and I bet that Palin knows that the US has 50 states...Obama claims that we have 57.
E) Palin is stupid? Ever see Obama without a teleprompter?
F) "Doesn't matter what party she belongs to, hwat she has done in the past politically-she is still stupid." I Googled "hwat", and guess what I found...

I worry that for every

I worry that for every misstep Palin makes, or borderline problematic sentence that comes from her mouth, she is also HELPED by the constant attacks on her. People tend to feel sorry for her. And now there are books on the market-- a new one, "99 Hilarious Sarah Palin Jokes," for instance-- that, hilarious though it might be, will no doubt make people feel sorry for her even more.

George W. Bush had executive experience too.

By the way, while Sarah Palin was governor of Alaska, a human rights organization in her state sued her because she refused to do anything when they informed her that alot of the foster children in her state were being overdrugged.

Somebody was wondering why

Somebody was wondering why Sarah Palin resigned as Governor. She did give an explanation. However, the newspapers did not report it very well. Well here is what happened: A person or persons filed about 20 ethics complaints against Palin. These complaints were all trivial and had no legal basis. For example, one time she wore a hat (most people wear hats in Alaska). This hat had some company logo on it. So she had to hire a lawyer for $25,000 to defend herself in court. Since this sort of thing happened about 20 times and the lawyer bill came to about $500,000. She did not have that kind of money. These court cases took up a lot of time and took time away from governing. She thought it best to let the Lieutenant Governor become governor, so that things would get done. Eventually, all the ethics complaints were dismissed. She was put in an impossible situation and so she did the only thing she could do: resign.

Retired Army seemed to have

Retired Army seemed to have forgot that Barack Obama resigned from the US Senate midterm; before the Presidential Election. Of course Obama is no quitter, he just had a better reason than Governor Palin for resigning midterm; and he knew that no one would keep mentioning it in every comments section whenever an article is written about Governor Palin.

"Retired Army" is typical of

"Retired Army" is typical of the people who regurgitate half-truths and whole lies they've been fed by the mainstream media and Democrat Party slanderers who are scared spitless of Sarah Palin's appeal.

He says Palin "quit her job as Governor mid term for reasons yet to be explained." If people don't know why, it's because the "news" people who made sure the public knew how much her campaign outfits cost the RNC (not taxpayers) pretended they couldn't figure it out either. Some people can't think unless those people tell them what to think. Since I CAN think, R.A., and unlike those reporters, don't want to smear Palin, lemme help you out.

Governor Palin was being sued systemically by dedicated (and probably compensated) enemies, accused of nearly twenty ethics violations. You may have heard of "Troopergate," a scandal ginned up by Dems in AK before she was asked to be McCain's VP nominee, and think that she was found to have abused her power. What you probably don't know is that judgment was rejected by another state panel before the 2008 election. Still, because of AK's broad ethics law (the Executive Branch Ethics Act), she had to pay legal fees out of her own pocket regardless of whether the complaints were judged to have any merit. So, the professional Palinphobes abused the statute, filing ethics complaints with no merit whatsoever, one after another after another after another.

For example, in March 2009, she was accused of corruption because she wore a jacket with the logo of her husband's snowmachine racing team on national TV. That's ridiculous, and the complaint was dismissed quickly over two months later, but not before it cost Gov. Palin personally approximately $20,000.

Source: http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/060409/sta_447115577.shtml

The total amount of legal expenditures to Alaska for nearly twenty baseless ethics complaints approached a half-million dollars . Palin's personal representation cost at least that much, more than her annual salary as Alaska's chief executive. Now, ask yourself, R.A.: If you were civilly sued for the sole reason that you were the one doing your job, a fistful of people hated your freakin' guts, and in the end you were working just to pay your lawyers, wouldn't you start thinking about doing something else for a living?

Worse, the promise of more money- and time-sucking complaints was obstructing the business of running Alaska. Less than a month later, on July 4, 2009, she announced she would be stepping aside at the end of the month to let Lt. Gov Sean Parnell take the reins since her presence as Governor was standing in the way of needed progress. Was she right? You betcha - the haters still filed complaints up to the moment she left office, hoping to bleed her financially. Have they filed ethics complaints against Parnell, baseless or otherwise? Nope - they don't care about Parnell, who was elected Governor this past November in a walk. They're solely dedicated to harassing Palin, creating ridiculous stories about her family's personal lives from whole cloth that Democrats repeat in the hope that they could be true.

R.A. says Palin "has said and done many things to bring deserved ridcule (sic) upon herself." One thing she hasn't done is had a high-profile failure as the Governor of Alaska, as have Governors like Granholm, Romney, Blagojevich, Schwarzenegger, McGreevey, Corzine, Sanford, and others. Think she has? Name it. If the haters could, they wouldn't be reduced to rending their garments every time she mispronounces a word.

To sum up the rest of the errors of R.A.'s comment: Sarah Palin's Alaska was NOT a "flop," it was a hit, one of the highest-rated shows in The Learning Channel's history. She was one of the Executive Producers of the program. If she wanted to pretend she felled that caribou with one shot, she could have faked it in editing, and we would have been none the wiser.

Finally: When you criticize other people's writing and spelling skills, make for darn sure you write better. R.A., cut and paste "I mean, he is one of those more than adequatley compensated goverment employees so much in the news latley, ain't he? (my consession to Red State scribes)" into your favorite word processor software and do a spell-check.

I agree w/ L.N. Smithee.

I agree w/ L.N. Smithee. Sarah Palin has been successful at nearly everything she has put her hand to. And she certainly has a more impressive CV than the president (including his disastrous 27 months in office) But for the Left "nearly" is not good enough when it comes to conservatives. The Left is not only afraid of Sarah Palin and what she represents, they are also jealous. They cannot stomach a woman- a woman!-who has been successful in business, in politics, in sports, has a happy marriage, is a good mother and grandmother, unabashedly loves both God and country, is very beautiful and is a conservative. By her own efforts and talent she has made herself into the feminist ideal - a woman who has it all. And doing it so joyfully without becoming a bitter old crone drives the Left into fits of spittle spewing apoplexy. And the most delicious part of all their hate filled rage is the fact that their drumbeat only draws more attention to her, making her more popular and sought out. I have two young daughters and when we talk about their aspirations for the future I never let the conversation end without holding Sarah Palin up as a model of what is possible for American women today.

Retired Army - Your comments

Retired Army -

Your comments are so far off base, it hard to know where to begin. Let's start with the television series you claim was a flop. The series opener had the highest ratings in the history of The Learning Channel. Most weeks her show placed fifth behind the four major networks, incredible ratings for a cable channel.

Let's take Palin's habit of writing notes on her hand and compare it to our President who can't even talk to a group of sixth grade students without having two teleprompters set up. Even Slo Joe Biden jokes about Obama's dependence on a teleprompter.

The media sent literally hundreds of reporters to Alaska to try to find any dirt they could and came up empty. The same media refused to look at Barack Obama's background at all for fear of what it might find. Everying is sealed: his birth certificate, his grades, his wife's grades and papers they wrote while they were in college. Barack Obama has released less information on himself than any President in recent history.

Sarah Palin and most Americans have something Barack Obama doesn't have and never will. She and they realize that we cannot keep spending money that we don't have. The stimulus was nothing more than an $800 billion boondoggle to the unions and other special interest groups. The unemployment rate is declining not because more people are working but because millions have stopped looking and have taken themselves out of the job market. Obama refuses to allow drilling offshore or in ANWR making us dependent on foreign oil.

The national debt, which hasn't phased Obama, is $14 trillion (higher than the GNP). That's $46,600 for every man, woman and child in the country or $186,000 for a family of four just to pay off the debt - not to run the government.

The media has been extremely biased in covering both Sarah Palin and Barack Obama. Journalism has been transformed into propaganda. The good news is that, according to a Gallup Study taken last fall, 57% of Americans either highly distrust or totally distrust the media. The bad news is that the most poorly educated (and, therefore, the most impressionable) are most likely to trust the media.

Obama spoke glowingly of Khalidi, and at least two other speakers said some things that could fairly be interpreted as advocating the state of Israel's demise. Also reported to have been at the dinner: Unrepentant terrorist William Ayers and his wife/partner in terror, Bernadine Dohrn, with whom Obama insisted he had no especially close relationship. fd96 Other facts not mentioned in the editorial is that Palin sent the sitting REPUBLICAN Governor to jail for corruption and won his spot-Obama, Emmanual and Axlerod helped re-elect Blajoavich as governor who is NOW going to jail. When Palin gave her speach at the Republican convention the tele prompter failed half way through and she delivered it flawlessly anyway..watch Presbojangles when the tele ptompter fails him! LOL. Obama got paided as a Senator for Illinois while not doing his job and campainging for President. Yet Palin quits so the state can be ran properly and you guys diss her for it! Obama's claim to executive experiance-he ran his political campaing..BWAHAHAHAHA! Now you name something that is out of reality (other than Obama's lies about bloody Sunday, the Kennedy airlift, the myth of his uncle liberating aschwitze, and who wrote Dreams of My Father etc)! I want to know why Obama went by the name Berry Satoro in high school and at Occidental college until his mother divorced Lolo Satoro. Did Obama attend Occidental College as a foriegn exchange student? Oh never mind constitutional requirements are not important to liberals and the press, more important to know if Palin or the campaign paid for her shoes, now that is really substance- meanwhile on to Martin Sheen- now there is a reality distractor from the dismal employment picture after two years of Prezbojangles spending $8ooBILLION to fix it! 1. Obama has conclusively

1. Obama has conclusively proved his citizenship. He released a valid, thoroughly attested Hawaii birth certificate. What has confused conservatives is that Hawaii, like several other states (including Florida, for example) computerized its birth certificates a number of years ago. The computer record, is under Hawaiian law (as is their right under the 10th amendment), the official record of birth. Contrary to the foolishness, almost all birth certificates issued in the US are called "Certificate of Live Birth" or "Certification of Live Birth." Yours probably says the same thing. Hawaiians routinely use these computerized printouts to obtain driver's licenses and passports. The issue was settled years ago. The persistence of this bizarre accusation against the President is a disgrace to the conservative movement and a disgrace to the South that is the center of birtherism. 2. President Obama didn't spend a single dime concealing his birth certificate, which he did, in fact, release promptly. On a general level, a teacher should understand how to verify facts and should know better than to base opinions on thoroughly discredited Internet rumors.

Show me one shred of evidence

Show me one shred of evidence from the hospital, doctor or nurse who can verify Obama's birth. Certifications of Birth and a Certificate of Birth are not the same thing. A Certification of Birth can be gained by parents saying a child was just born there, etc. That's what we've seen from Obama.

But having said that, his mother was American and he's president, so what the heck. McCain was born in Panama at a military base. Obama is there, let's leave it alone and beat him in the next election.
