Letter: Pick better role models

As I read the Feb. 4 Augusta Chronicle newspaper, I was thankful that I live in South Carolina, not Richmond County, Ga. What a disgrace Richmond County Commissioner Bill Fennoy is to the people he was elected to represent.

He is quoted bragging on the many times he has been arrested for civil disorder, law violations and disobeying lawful orders from civil authorities and policemen. He further admits to dishonoring the American flag and Pledge of Allegiance many, many times over the past year in the same fashion as the anti-American NFL players often do on national television.

As a person with civil responsibilities, including the assumed charge to set, establish, and maintain a positive, lawful example for the youth of his constituency to emulate, he has been, by his own admission, derelict in each of these areas.

Is it any wonder that family structure has broken down, that the majority of crime committed against minorities are committed by minorities and that parents fight a losing battle teaching their children to become good, law-abiding, honest, productive citizens, when their civil leadership is so despicable?

Augustans, choose your role models carefully! Weed out the poor influences in your community and teach your children to be an example instead of following a bad one.

Teach honor, respect, patriotism, responsibility, accountability, ambition and productivity to your youth so they can actually change the course their environment may be leading them on.

It’s not up to some other unknown or unnamed third party to provide opportunity, training and nurturing for your family. It is up to you!
