Letter: Local election rigging

Regarding your Jan. 21 article concerning the Richmond County Democratic Committee elections, I want to clarify for your readers: this was not a fight between “young socialists and the old guard” but between those who respect our bylaws and those who do not.

I am a senior citizen and I voted for Hillary Clinton. It took over a year to finally force these officers to hold new elections, but these elections were nowhere close to what our bylaws prescribe and they were heavily rigged to protect the incumbent officers who conducted them.

They put out false and conflicting advertising prior to the election. They advertised on a November Democratic breakfast flier that there were no vacancies in three out of eight districts, yet later told their members by email that there were at least seven vacancies in all eight districts. They ran a tiny ad in the classifieds in December stating they were holding elections to “fill vacancies,” yet later told the Chronicle they were “redoing the 2016 elections.”

But on election day they posted a warning that certain seats being voted on were “2018 seats” that would expire in April, and gave no explanation which seats those might be. They sent an email to some of our members advertising early elections, but did not tell the public.

Several hours after early voting started they sent out another email announcing they would allow same-day registration on Jan. 20 for those who wanted to declare as candidates, which ultimately resulted in ballots being different on Jan. 20 than the ballots given to early voters. They refused to let anyone see the ballots prior to voting.

They advertised that they would be using electronic voting, but that was not true; instead they counted the ballots privately by themselves. They refused to let anyone photograph the final results.

And perhaps the most egregious example of election rigging? They refused to publish the membership list that would have allowed their opponents to get out the vote from members who quit months ago because of their nonsense.

In your article, former Chair Lowell Greenbaum was quoted as saying the Richmond County Democratic Party is a “family” – to which I say “more like a mafia family.”
