Letter: We’re in new era

In this era of lewd and lascivious behavior, the monster of sexual harassment has once again reared its ugly head and moved front and center to bare all.

We see the ugliness and meanness that has intimidated women and children for decades causing great pain, horror and silence.

Obviously the powerful and rich appear guilty of preying on the weak, unsuspecting and innocent, a phenomenon pervasive in all aspects of society permeating class, gender and age. Molestation is assault on the non-consenting, and rape or sexual misconduct is battery on the unwilling, all punishable by law and shun by society.

While the statute of limitations erases certain crimes committed back in the day, such cruelties are nonetheless evil and frowned upon when alleged, and unacceptable if proven.

Apologies aside, society is correct to distance itself from culprits.

When there is no evidence except a preponderance of accusers, as with the drug-rape accusations and allegations of childhood abuse, the notion of fabrication and perjury for no apparent reason or gain is hard to swallow. More than a grain of salt is necessary to assume disbelief. Authenticity is more probable, especially when victims never knew each other.

Unlike the days when rape of black women and girls not only went unpunished, but more often than not unreported – and when reported, unbelieved and disregarded – we are in a new era where most victims are respectable, credible and white.

Though the predators are, for the most part, still wealthy white men, the time has gone with the wind when immunity and impunity protect them. We cannot undue the intimidation, shame, embarrassment, horror and terror imposed, but we may alleviate some discomfort by insisting the perpetrators pay financially for their trespassing, so we may forgive those who trespass against us. Amen!
