The travesty going on in the NFL has gone beyond stupidity. I feel that, as a true American, I must respond.
I was born in January 1933 and served in the Navy from 1950 to 1953. I was taught by my parents to stand and hold my right hand over my heart every time I heard our national anthem. I have had a long and successful career. I have been a football fan for as long as I can remember.
Many of us fans have been aware that, for several years, professional football has been changing. Franchise owners, coaches and players have become so greedy that all they want is to make more money. Many of us have had to pay our tax money to support the construction of massive stadiums. Ticket costs have risen accordingly. If you are watching professional football on television you see the same ads over and over again. Many players are more interested in causing injury to other players than playing the game as it should be played. All of this is contributing to the downfall of professional football.
All of my life I have been thankful to my parents for the fact that I was born in the United States. Franchise owners must realize that perhaps nowhere else in the world could they have achieved such success. The coaches and players must come to realize this as well.
The NFL franchises are privately owned. Therefore the owners have the right to demand that all their employees must stand and honor our flag and our national anthem.
Every American has the right to his or her own opinions. During my long career I was asked to wear a suit and tie on many occasions. Whether I agreed with it or not I wore a suit and tie. I was an employee and that was part of my job. The same applies to the owners and employees of the NFL franchises.
For those of you who still think you have the right to dishonor our flag and national anthem, I suggest you take your money and leave the country.
