Focus on the factors

Every time we experience another mass shooting in this country, the political left rushes to the microphone to demand yet another new gun control law.

This new law will be, they say, the one that will finally put a stop to mass shootings, once and for all.

When the fallacy of that claim becomes obvious by the next mass shooting, they are not phased. Instead of seeking a better answer, they simply make the same claim again. Our existing laws are insufficient, they say; we need another new law. Democrats apparently believe wishing, hoping and passing meaningless laws is the solution to all complex problems.

The shooter in Las Vegas broke myriad existing laws in order to kill and injure all those people last week. Only in the mind of a delusional, committed, left-wing ideologue is the absence of a new law the answer to stopping such horrific violence.

The perpetrators of such crimes are, by definition, not respectful of, or obedient to, laws. They couldn’t care less about them. Laws are not the answer. They are, in fact, part of the problem. They lull some of us into a false sense of security and allow some of us to congratulate ourselves for solving a problem we’ve really just exacerbated.

Mass murder is a complex problem that won’t be solved by wishing, hoping and passing yet another law.

People are the problem here, not the guns. We need to focus on the factors influencing people to become mass killers, not concentrating on the methods – guns, knives, cars, trucks, bombs, etc. – they choose to carry out the killings.
