Arenas belong downtown

As a native Detroiter and traveler, every arena I’ve visited was downtown, whether it’s Dallas, San Antonio, Philadelphia, New York or Atlanta.

Detroit has three arenas: Cobo Hall, Joe Louis Arena (named for the famous boxer) and Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions. Cobo and Joe Louis reside near the beautiful downtown riverfront, and Ford Field is in the heart of downtown.

Except for I-20 and I-520, Augusta lacks freeways. Most cities have freeway access to get a person easily in and out of downtown regardless if they come from the north, south, east or west.

The James Brown Arena should remain downtown. If people believe having the JBA on Gordon Highway will sprout new restaurants, it should have already happened with the 30,000 Fort Gordon-area population (towncharts.com/fort gordon).

I have never lived near a major military installation and not enjoyed a string of sit-down restaurants outside the main gate. It’s ridiculous.

The Regency site would be a great place for an enclosed mini-amusement park and an outdoor water park complete with children’s rides, games, wall climbing, zip lining and eateries like Adventure Crossing was, but amplified. Just imagine from Highway 520 seeing a rainbow neon-lighted giant ferris wheel towering the night sky on Gordon Highway.

Without a vision, the people perish. – The Bible
