We have to fear fear itself

I recently spent most of a day in the World War II Museum in New Orleans.

I’ve read a lot about WWII over the years, but I still learned a lot. I recommend it to you when you are in the area.

In the section on the events leading up to the war, they showed Franklin Roosevelt’s speech on the Four Freedoms that are the basis of democracy. To remind those of you whose memory is like mine, they are: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

All of them are under attack by the Trump administration and its followers:

1. There is a concerted effort to discredit the news media.

2. Muslims are being denied entry to the US, and they along with Jews, Hindus, and Sheiks are being physically and verbally attacked.

3. The safety net that protects the poor is being dismantled in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy.

4. Trump’s entire campaign and now his administration is based on making us afraid – afraid of our neighbors, afraid of our government, afraid of our allies.

If we are realistic about the real threats that face us, the manufactured fear won’t blind us to the attacks on the foundations of democracy here at home. Remember, all that is necessary for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing.
