Time to move forward

Contrary to all the fearmongers, haters and racists, eight years of black folks occupying the White House did not cause our world to end. In fact, America is bigger, better and more beautiful because of it.

This country has always demonstrated an uncanny ability to produce the right person at the right time to overcome adversity befalling our mutual progress and prosperity. Our choice of Barack Obama proved a continuation of this tradition, and millions of Americans are proud of his administration and his family. The First Family has been exemplary and praiseworthy. President Obama exhibited the correct temperament, knowledge and acumen to lead, comprehend and compromise.

Now as we turn the page, America has chosen Donald Trump, amid controversy, to lead with better conditions and circumstances than Obama dreamed when he started. George W. Bush inherited a surplus economy, balanced budget, and encouraging international relations from Bill Clinton, yet he passed to Obama two wars, a great recession, tarnished international relations and failing and fleeing businesses. Today our economy is growing again with unemployment declining.

However, realizing our popular vote is not as important or commanding as it was thought to be, our next presidential cycle may prove less interesting and less honorable. Imagine what would be happening if Trump would have bested Hillary by more than three million votes and lost. A civil war would have erupted. Rightfully so! If we continue down this politically perilous road our peaceful transition of power may become a distinct memory.

President-elect Trump and his controversial Cabinet selections are the wave of the future. Let’s hope they are not a tidal wave washing away decades of progress and advancement. Washington needs major change from big money influence, corruption and special interests. Term limits, anti-gerrymandering, anti-disenfranchisement and simplicity in voting are parts of a solution, but lawmakers seldom make laws that radically change the status quo. Together we must help Trump and his supporters play a tune we all know, like America the Beautiful.
