Don't snub laws or civility

  • Follow Letters

I liked the editorial Aug. 18 about respect and civility starting with love (“You know this, but are you doing it?”). It also starts with the disciplined love of teaching our children how to listen and obey. Without obedience to basic, commonsense laws, there are many needless deaths, injuries and imprisonments.

From preschool, we teach our children to walk on the edge of the road and never go into the road without looking both ways. When adults refuse to walk on the edge of the road, law enforcement rightfully believes the pedestrians are up to no good. Since more cops die per capita than overseas military, they will of necessity have an offensive mind-set to protect themselves and their fellows. When people of any age risk their safety walking at night in the middle of the road, they are not obeying basic traffic rules of law and hundreds get hit every year. The drivers are not held liable.

Kids hanging out with kids who are not busy working or in school too often bully the neighbors or get into drugs. They may get into trouble by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Many adults try drinking “just a couple of beers” before driving, but who tells them they could end up locked up for years for killing someone while driving under the influence no matter their blood level?

Another example: Aggressive driving is against the law, but you would never know it by the law the Georgia General Assembly passed this year about using the left lane only for passing. It defies logic that drivers are now backed up on the right lane since people enter and exit that lane, whereas the very purpose of the four-lane highway was to relieve congestion. Twice as many people can get from point A to point B by having four lanes. But the new law thumbs its nose at speed limits saying essentially: Don’t listen to the law, drive past those slowpokes on the right so you can go 10 miles over the speed limit by driving on the left, because if you drive the legal speed limit you might be fined.

It is by not paying attention to basic laws that our country shows disdain for civility – not respecting laws and law enforcers when they are on the road, and not obeying the speed limits.

These are just a few examples of little laws that, when treated as not that important, cause immeasurable pain and suffering.

Like backing up a racist

Like backing up a racist nutcase who thinks he's allowed to graze his cattle for free and not pay lawful fees, and the gang of armed thugs that showed up to stand by his side. People who don't even believe the laws of this country apply to them but many, even this paper, and many of its commenters supported him and his militia sovereign citizen buddies faithfully.

Like all the racist in

Like all the racist in Missouri who are shooting guns, threatening violence, looting and the gang of thugs who support them. If you act like an animal you should be treated like one-we need to have the rule of law. But how can we prosecute the nutcase racist rancher, or racist black community when our own federal govt ignores federal laws in regard to immigration and marijuana laws. I gather there is no rule of law.

Bod the rancher you mentioned

Bod the rancher you mentioned is a nutcase, but I believe in Arizona the fed is doing the same thing and fencing in an area that ranchers have paid to use for decades. Fact is the EPA is planning invasive manipulation and interference because of the ruse that we can actually address global warming=which scientist state it will take over a hundred years for anything to take effect-so that's settled science.

This writer, like many

This writer, like many people, think that left lane was put there for speeders. It was put there solely for passing the people in the right lane who are driving UNDER the speed limit and big rigs, especially going uphill that cannot even come close to maintaining the speed limit.

I wonder how many of these people claiming the left land is a "speeding lane" have been caught in a jam on I-20 because both lanes are clogged. Eventually, in order to maintain a safe distance behind a vehicle, the lines of traffic will be slowed down to the point that drivers in the middle and farther back will be going less than the posted speed.

That lane was put there to keep traffic flowing - not put there to have two blocked lanes.

There is no evidence that the rancher, Mr. Bundy, ....

There is no evidence that the rancher, Mr. Bundy, is a racist. He made a comment that was not as smooth and slick as that of an elite northeastern liberal. He spoke in everyday, western language with no nuances.
If someone has the specific quote, full quote, not just a sentence or two our of a longer interview, that proves he's a racist please show it.

Dee because there are some

Dee because there are some racist who caucus with conservative Reps you are all racist, but just remember because Communist caucus with Dems they are all communist. Course any fool would know that cause their leader Obama is a self described neoMarxist. Now it becomes obvious that Obama, after twenty years of listening to Rev. Wright with racism and social justice, is doing his best to make sure the chickens come home to roost to punish white America and then allow terrorist to punish us too. Obama calls it social justice and fairness. Although everyone knows there is a war on terror, Obama has denied it mostly calling it work place violence, etc, because he wants the US to be attacked again-it's part of fundamental change plan. He has left the back door open, even an invitation to bomb NYC.

" It defies logic that

" It defies logic that drivers are now backed up on the right lane since people enter and exit that lane, whereas the very purpose of the four-lane highway was to relieve congestion."

So, you want traffic backed up in both lanes? I see it every single day that I'm off duty and driving. People "cruising" right along in the left lane, beside a vehicle going to same speed, usually below the speed limit; for miles they do nothing but ride beside each other, backing traffic up!! Is this courtesy for other drivers? This law is NOT a bad thing; but officers need to use common sense judgment in enforcing it.

When I'm in my patrol car and come up behind someone in the left lane on the interstate, the vast majority of the time they IMMEDIATELY get over into the right lane! Why? Because they see a patrol car and either don't want them behind them, or out of respect move to the side. Why can't this same respect be extended to everyone? If that person is speeding and driving recklessly, call 911 and report it. We will try to catch them. If they're doing 75 mph and you're doing 70, why not just move over and let them go? I'm not advocating speeding, I'm just saying a little courtesy goes a long way at keeping peace!! And when speaking of courtesy, what does it matter how fast their going, just be courteous and move over for faster traffic, please!! Again, if they're driving recklessly, let them get past you, then you're not in danger anymore, and call 911!! Keeping an aggressive driver around you; and they start trying aggressive movements to get around you, causes more danger than it prevents. People are going to be people; and some have no regard for others safety. CALL 911 on these people; but don't try to administer justice yourself by blocking them.

Is 75, so much more egregious than 70? Yes, it's against the law and one could say that, but is in tremendously more dangerous? Did you know that County, City and Campus police can't issue you a citation using radar, unless your speed exceeds the posted speed limit by MORE than 10 miles per hour? So, we can't even write you a ticket, unless you're going 11 mph over the speed limit. This law does NOT include the State Patrol, but I know most of them in this area they adhere to these standards as well. Unless it's a school zone, you will rarely see a person get a ticket at less than 10 over the speed limit.

Well said. Why is it someone who chooses to drive 5mph over the speed limit feels they have the right to dictate that speed for everyone? I'm not advocating speeding either but for some reason the lane hoggers seem to lack that element of critical thinking and decency.

Bod, Even though Bundy's

Bod,
Even though Bundy's supporters were armed to the hilt, the Feds backed off. Now just imagine that same scenario if faced by the Black Panthers (which is almost non-existent as a viable group) that the right loves to hold up as an example of deviant behavior. I don't believe the Feds would have shown the same restraint.

The reason: The right gave Bundy cover and called him and his supporters patriots. The Feds withdrew, I think for fear of the backlash, and two of those people allegedly kill two officers later before killing themselves.

I cannot believe you honestly posted that Cliven Bundy's comments did not make him a racist? For heaven's sake, THAT is not plain, western speak. To say so insults every educated, well spoken person that lives in the western part of our country. To say so insults even the uneducated westerners who actually have basic morality and a brain in their heads. COME ON! If he is not considered a racist then I have no idea what you must think the term means. Sorry. Most times I may not agree with your posts but they do hold some truth. This one was way out there dee!

This letter writers

This letter writer's assessment of what contributes to incivility is WAY off. She asserts that the relationship between speeding/jaywalking/etc. and increases in incivility is directly proportional.

Taking her personal pet peeve example: Weren't people going 5 and 10 over the speed limit 20 and 30 years ago also, when she would (probably) say that people were more civil?

Way off.

The increase in incivility is inversely proportional to the spiritual health of a nation. The spiritual health of a nation is tied to the relationship that a nation, as a whole, has with the one true God.

The more that any nation, as a whole, is antithetical to the one true God, then the less the character of the one true God will be seen in that nation's people.

For example, once a nation has sanctioned and approved of the killing of children developing in their mother's wombs (and everything that typically leads up to this) then that nation will begin to exude savagery (incivility) in many other ways as well.

Well I agree and think

Well I agree and think Bundy's comments were racist, but we have Harry Reid, Al Sharpton, and even Barack Obama making similar idiotic racist comments. I don't know if it reflects all these people are racist or just get caught up in their own PR and activity and run off at the mouth like a babbling idiot=like Biden who is really hilarious at times, but then we had Dan Quayle a demigod of babbling idiots. Obviously even smart people can be babbling idiots at times is the moral of the story.

I understand completely

I understand completely officers being fed up with pedestrians that WON'T GET OUT OF THE ROAD, even when asked politely and continue to impede traffic, shoulder to shoulder walking side by side in the lane with in the same direction as traffic. I have seen it happen time and again. They should be detained or at least given a warning because they are obstructing the officers.

I loved that you used the word "babbling." I recently had what I like to call a blinding glimpse of the obvious. Gee, the term babbling came from the Tower of Babel. Go figure! It was just hilarious to me that I had never picked up on that before.

stuaby- so when this country

stuaby- so when this country was founded in 1776, and abortion was legal, does that mean that the US was savage?

Learn your American history. The first antiabortion law wasn't even passed until 1828.

Well, that's a new one, that the US was uncivil when it was founded.

I want to say, I also think

I want to say, I also think Bundy is a racist idiot!! BUT, If you look up my comments; I NEVER took up for him!! I said all along that he looked like someone who just doesn't want to play by the rules. Thousands of people pay to lease federal land for their cattle; what makes him different? He makes money off his cattle, so if he's raising them on land that isn't his, he should PAY!! He's a greedy idiot!! And I would say a racist!! His comments were beyond stupid!!
