Support cleaner energy

  • Follow Letters

In the wake of President Obama’s announcement on his climate action plan, the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed limits to carbon emissions from power plants. Their new rules not only should help curb climate change but also provide cleaner air for us to breathe.

Scientists overwhelmingly agree that climate disruption is happening and that carbon pollution is a major contributor. The problem is acute in Georgia, as our state houses Georgia Power’s Plant Scherer, which is America’s dirtiest power plant. Its parent company, Southern Co., is the third-largest carbon polluter in the United States. Furthermore, our state has suffered in recent years from drought-driven crop losses caused by climate change.

We can counter climate change and clean the air we breathe by converting to clean, renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, which also will create jobs here. Georgia has a great deal of potential in solar and wind development. Our state ranks No. 5 in the nation for benefitting from development and use of solar power.

I support the EPA’s new standards, which would reduce carbon emissions and pollution, and give all of us in Georgia a cleaner, brighter future.

Greg Sutherland

Mr. Sutherland what climate

Mr. Sutherland what climate Change are we supposed to stop? The average temperature of the earth hasn't changed in 16 years. Antarctic ice is at record levels, arctic ice is increasing after decreasing for a period. We are having an unusually cool summer. NONE OF THE CLIMATE MODELS USED BY THE CHICKEN LITTLES OF CLIMATE SCIENCE ARE PREDICTING OR CALIBRATED FOR THIS STABLIZATION OF TEMPERATURE WE ARE SEEING.So let's have America reduce our energy production, increase the cost of our production and further hurt the economy while people in India and China dump more "green house " gas into the atmosphere than we could imagine to address a problem that doesn't exist. If the problem did exist our actions wouldn't effect it because of the actions of China and India. I think I understand.

Mr. Sutherland must be living

Mr. Sutherland must be living under a rock. This administration has pumped hundreds of millions thus far into so called "green" energy producers. To date approximately 25 of them have filed bankruptcy within 6 months or created failed or inferior alternative methods.

We have yet to hear where the money went these companies received. If it went to pay debts, they would still be in business, so IMHO, it most likely went into someone's pockets - maybe a little kickback to certain politicians?

Carcraft's post is right on point. I will add that personal responsibility for our own space - picking up litter, removing rusting/decaying debris, planting foliage on our property, using our water and electricity wisely, replanting each tree destroyed by construction crews, teaching our children to respect and protect our environment - would solve a lot of problems now and prevent many future problems.

These wind farms have killed

These wind farms have killed thousands of birds, many of them bald eagles. The EPA has given these farms a pass for the greater good.

The eagle was taken off the endangered species list. I wonder if that's because of their increased numbers - which will once again diminish as a result of these wind farms - or if it has to do with allowing wind farms to slaughter these majestic birds of prey.

Government regulations, and those of the EPA,...

Government regulations, and those of the EPA in particular, have killed the small towns that depend on logging, coal, fishing, and farming for their livelihoods. There appears to be no end in sight.

Kill the small towns---kill the American spirit.

The EPA has done and continues to be more destructive to American freedom and liberty than any other agency ever conceived in government. It goes well beyond anything that was in its original charter.

Never does the EPA take economic destruction into its regulations.

There is no proof that CO2 causes warming nor is methane a culprit.

If you want to see true science, take away all the government grants that are given which support global warming research.

The alarmists can't even agree on what to call it. First, it was "Global Warming". Then it was "Climate Change". Now it's "Climate Disruption."

The bottomline is it's all about government power and destruction of the Western Civilization's way of living. It's also about wealth distribution from the pillars of Western Civilization to the less developed countries.

By the way, oil is a renewable...

By the way, oil is a renewable and wind was tried and it failed in the '80's--the 1880's and solar was tried and failed in the '90's--the 1890's. The ideas are not new. If they were economically viable the market would have developed them.

This morning I was listening to NPR as I walked (no talk radio on Sunday morning) and one of the guests said that democracy is holding back responses to "Climate Change" because only a strong authoritarian leader to get the job done. This just shows most of these people are "watermelons"--green on the outside and red on the inside.

I give the writer 5

I give the writer 5 Pinocchio's. Even if this letter were true wind and solar could not produce 25% of the energy needed to replace current needs. If these "clowns" are not stopped we need to prepare for power bills to double or even triple. America will be a third world country over night.

Obamacare is not about

Obamacare is not about healthcare , the border crisis is not about helping immigrants and "climate disruption" not about saving the earth. With these folks its all about wealth redistribution.

I wonder if Mr. Sutherland would care to address energy production methods in China or India?

I'm good with building a Nuke in Dearing also....

My dear sir you are so misinformed it would take a response as long as an EPA regulation to rebut your statements. The coal industry in this country pales in comparison to what it once was. However the coal industries in other countries such as China have grown exponentially. They're building on average a coal plant a week while ours are shutting down nearly as fast. Every Green project in this country uses more energy to produce than it saves. Ethanol has been a lose/lose since it's misguided inception. It takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than the ethanol saves. Forgetting the fact that corn prices have soared raising food prices along the way. The solar industry has been nothing but a windfall for China as they are the largest producers of solar panels. As someone on this board has already has pointed out if "green" energy was viable private money would have jumped on it years ago. All Obama's push to force clean energy is just a sham as he attempts at making us a third world economy. The one bright spot in all of this is that maybe illegals invading our country will stop coming when they find out things are worse here than where they left.

So the writer supports

So the writer supports astronomical increase in middle class America's electricity rates and the destruction of tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of jobs in some of the poorest parts of this country.

The writer also fails to address the fact that NOTHING we do here will impact GLOBAL carbon emissions. Industries seeking cheaper power will simply move to China, India who will produce MORE energy with MORE coal. And Eastern Europe is not about to cut back their coal use either.

The people who want to destroy America by doing things that have ZERO global impact are simply liberal fools.

I support America and whatever it takes to keep the middle class strong and prosperous. The temperature is not going up and these are the same alarmist fools that told us we were all going into an ice age 30 years ago because of a few years "blip" of cold weather. Liberal always need a crisis...a "cause"....and when they don't have one they invent one. And they never really care what bad things they do to the YOU because their cause MUST be just. After all, they are the pseudo-intellectual, more enlightened species...at least in their own minds.

Most of the left and the democrat party are 'watermelons'. They deny it but the proof is in the pudding.

Indoctrinated letter writer

I love the smell of gasoline. I used to pump that leaded gas into cars at my granny's country store. Darned. She did too and lived to be 96.

I am still alive, though people like you make me question why I want to be working, still, like my grandparents were in their 80's.

Nuclear!

This moron forgot to mention that even though Obama is anti-nuclear, Georgia Power has the determination to build the cleanest power plants on earth, two more units here in GA and plant Vogtle. These four units show how to stay “green” and economically viable.

Unilateral action doesn't work

Several have noted that developing nations like Brazil, Russia, India and China do not have to control their pollution. If America does, then the cost of our products will continue to put us at a disadvantage. The ocean rising 1 inch in a century should not cause those in Miami to head for the hills. A carbon tax will do nothing but raise prices for all Americans. North Dakota has full employment while we subsidize non-workers in Illinois, New York and other "progressive" states. Do you want to be Detroit? If you ignore the lessons of history, you will be doomed to repeat the mistakes!

Afadel, could you explain

Afadel, could you explain why? No warming in over 16 years, record levels of Antarctic. Ice, arctic ice recovering. What problem are we solving?
