Legalizing marijuana is more proof that Americans are ordinary, not exceptional. American exceptionalism is a delusion of Rush Limbaugh and right-wing conservatives. Like ordinary humans, Americans talk right but walk wrong.

Even America’s greatest foundational document disproves the myth of American exceptionalism. The Constitution’s 13th Amendment dealt with the abolition of slavery. Had Americans been exceptional, slavery would not have existed, and the need to abolish slavery would not have been necessary. Next, the 18th Amendment dealt with prohibiting intoxicating liquors. Exceptional Americans would not have excessively consumed intoxicating liquors, and the need for Prohibition would not have been necessary. However, because of moral weakness for illegally consuming intoxicating liquors, which led to lawlessness, Americans were forced to enact the 21st Amendment repealing Prohibition. Vice won and virtue lost.

It’s the same for legalizing marijuana. Moral weakness, lawlessness and vice have defeated morality and virtue.

It is obvious the letter writer, like Obama, has no idea what the term "American Exceptionalism" means.

It means nothing close to what the letter writer is trying to tie it to.

"American Exceptionalism" refers to the fact that America was the first country founded on the idea that the people's rights come not from a sovereign such as a king who got them from God in the concept of divine right of kings. America was founded on the concept that we get our rights directly from God and not from the government.

We, the people, tell the government what to do and not the other way around---I must say Obama is doing his best to act like he got power from God to tell us what our rights are.

We are still the only country on earth with that concept of exceptionalism as its founding principle.

If the writer would read the Declaration of Independence he would find the phrase, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,....." That in a nutshell is what makes America exceptional.

Mr Palmer, don't feel too bad because your idol, Obama, is just as ignorant as you were before you read this comment about what "American Exceptionalism" means. Feel good about yourself because you now know something Obama doesn't.

Not much can be added to the great rebuttal you've written.

American Exceptionalism has nothing to do with personal flaws. No one is perfect, but our country is. Hopefully in 18 more months, it will begin to heal after the damage that has been inflicted on it from this administration and that exceptionalism will shine through again.

Doesn't this guy realize slavery has been around since the dawn of time. This wasn't just an American concept. The fact that we abolished it while many other countries still condone slavery further shows our exceptionalism.

Do you even know that slavery was practiced through the ENTIRE WORLD, long before America even existed?? Or did that get overlooked in your college history class? America has been in existence for 238 years, and slavery has existed for THOUSANDS of years; but somehow, America get's ALL the blame for the practice; mostly from LEFTIST'S who are blinded by what they've been taught!!

Here is a clue; AMERICA got it right and abolished it!! Many Countries still practice it!!

You intend to tell me that I and all other American's are responsible for each individual who CHOOSES to abuse alcohol?? Alcohol CAN be consumed in moderation, without any intoxicating side affects. If consumed in moderation, there is no "lawlessness" or disrespectful behavior!! As I am a Christian, show me in the Bible where it says that we should NEVER have a drink of alcohol!! Good luck with that. The Bible says DRUNKARDS shall not inherit the kingdom of Heaven, and that we are not to be of STRONG drink; with means excessive!! It's called FREE WILL and we must be responsible for our OWN free will, not that of others!!

With narcotics, the Bible is very specific about that. The word Sorcerer in the Bible, in the greek is pharmaceous, which DOES mean drugs!! With narcotics, there is not having one or two drinks and NOT feeling any affect!! In Revelations 21:8, it's explained exactly what's going to happen to them.

Stop trying to confuse the truth!!

It sounds like Kevin is saying American is not perfect and this is correct but be are different from all other governments that have come before us. Our government is by the "consent" of the people. I just cant figure out why so many hate America.

If you want to read 688 pages of the same type of running down America as Mr. Palmer does in his letter go to Barnes and Noble and pay $20 for Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States 1492-2001".

It is the bible for college history courses and also some high school history classes. Additionally, it is read by the left to fuel up the sheeple to ensure they understand why they are victims and who is responsible for their victim hood .

Why read this book? It's the same reason I studied Soviet tactics and those of other potential enemies when I was an Infantry officer---you need to know and understand your enemy.

Make no bones, we are in a war with the left and the more we can learn about them the more successful we can be in saving America.

I believe (in my opinion) that I know exactly why they hate America; because they hate America's GOD!! They hate who we are referring to, when we say "In God We Trust". They are CONSUMED with jeolousy, because they want the same blessings, WITHOUT having to commit to Him; but that's not how it works!!

Anyone with HALF a brain can see that America IS exceptional!! Not only America, but America AND Isreal!! We are BOTH two of the youngest established Countries in existence; yet we are both two of the most powerful and blessed financially!! America is an amazing piece of land, with EVERYTHING you could possible imagine!! They believe we STOLE this land, and they want it "back".

I was just listening to recordings of radical Islamists (Including the Muslim Brotherhood's leader) the other day, saying such things as "Allah shall deliver the heads of the infidels to us believers" and "Israel and the west shall be destroyed by Allah, through the hands of his believers." Even small children, making such radical claims. Look up the video "Obama, the Anti-Israel President".

Is this not insanity? Do they honestly believe their god will deliver us into their hands? The only thing their god has given them is THIRD WORLD COUNTRY STATUS, with fascism and communism!! There god certainly has not delivered MORE freedom to his people; he certainly hasn't delivered POWER and blessings!! These radicals even praise Hitler and say he was used by allah to administer justice to the Jews!! Well, guess what happened to Hitler??? He LOST!! Every time these radicals have went against America and Israel, they've LOST!!

So, if I'm an outsider looking in; someone who isn't Muslim or Christian, but I want to believe in a God; I certainly wouldn't believe THEIRS is the most powerful!! Again, theirs has delivered them NOTHING!! In 238 years, America's God has made it the most powerful nation, EVER; with the most wonderful piece of land and amazing financial blessings!! Financially, a person is America making 40k a year, would be in the top 2% of the world's income earners!!

And they still believe we aren't exceptional?? That THEIR god is more powerful than ours?? Isn't the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?? Everytime THEY and their god has taken on Israel and the west, they've lost; yet they continue to do the same thing, which is war with Israel and the west!!

But yes, they are going to continue this insanity of attacking and demeaning America and Israel; and there isn't much WE can do about stopping it. But, the day is vastly approaching, where they shall SEE, with their eyes; exactly who is exceptional and whose God rules in the kingdom of man!! On that day, there won't be any doubt!!

Depressing, Glaring Ignorance of History

Mr. Palmer, name one country in the world which never had slavery. From 1850 to 1900, every single North, Central, South American country abandoned slavery out of "moral" (Christian) consciousness. One, led by a stupid president who could not negotiate, led to 600,000 deaths. That's Lincoln the great "hero".

Should you care to learn history, African adults were slaughtered and their villages destroyed by Muslims for a single tusk of ivory, during this same period. The children were enslaved, and memory of their culture was erased. So, nobody lived to complain.

cogi, What I'm trying to do is to explain the term "American Exceptionalism" which is thrown around and misconstrued and misunderstood.

If the term meant that America was above the vices and shortfalls Mr. Palmer points out he would be more on target because America is not above degradation of its morals and values. As I tried to explain in my first post, perhaps somewhat lamely, the term has to do with the principles and the pillars of our Founding....not behavior or actions.

I can't think of a single Conservative, outside of the posers you mentioned (Westboro Baptist) who think America is NOT exceptional!! This man believes America is not exceptional because we gave MORE freedom to people??? Seriously?

His argument is a typical left wing argument, period!! America is awful because we had slavery 150 years ago; completely ignoring the FACT that EVERY Country had slavery 150+ years ago!! America is awful because we had legal alcohol AND because we made it illegal, AND because we made it legal again!! And now, America (the entire Country) is awful because SOME want to legalize marijuana and SOME don't!! And this means this Country isn't exceptional??

Pleeeeeaasse!! This writer needs to open his eyes, look around him and see the most exceptional Country that has ever existed!! Our founders knew if our rights came from man then man could take them back but if our rights came from our Creator no man could take them. This is a BIG problem for progressives who want to be the giver of rights.

Thank you for you comment! We need more people to speak out about the TRUTH!! Slavery started with the Muslims in the middle east and Africa!! Supressing their own people, then selling them and others into slavery for financial gain!! THEY were the ones transporting these slaves all around the world and selling them!! Maybe people's anger should be directed towards those people!!

But, just as God get's blamed for ALL the dispicable free willed decisions MAN makes, America gets blamed for all bad things that have happened in the world; even before America existed!!

it was the constitution and the bill of rights..stating our dignity, value and rights come from GOD, our CREATOR and not the whim of man...as dee so correctly stated....american exceptionalism...in the last 70..just to list a few...destroyed TOTO'S imperalistic EMPIRE WW2 , helped defeat HITLER by armed force and suppling our ALLIES with unheard of manufactured supplies during WW2, liberating the world without exception , landed on the moon, created an economy that lifted millions into a lifestyle that was the envy of the world while defeating RUSSIA in the cold war, freeing eastern EUROPE without firing shot...every natural disaster around the world massive help, govt and from the private sector...freedom is a responsability that give us the right to excell AND to be generous and caring, only in the the U.S. , the ills spoken of in the letter is the abuse of freedom not the privelege of freedom..and i lay the abuses directly at the dims...where deviant behaviour is not only encouraged but celebrated...

There WAS NO "need" for the Eighteenth Amendment, hence it's repeal. It was litle more than a moralistic knee-jerk political reaction to a social problem. We still get a lot of that today. Do we really need to go back to the 1930's to make a point? A really flimsy point at that..... do we?

Lots of fallacy arguments I think we all agree. America became a superpower in a short period of time after WWII. What it made it so was people-people who drove technology and invention, more noble laureates than anyone, the strongest economy, a standing army that none now or past could match, and though feared by many and we have meddled we also have been like Superman coming to save the day all over the planet. Now I think that was past and the trend because of the will of the people is to ignore what is happening and be self absorbed get mine, have fun and culture- people don't believe in America anymore. I know I don't sadly. Wealth did get restricted from a growing trend of all Americans growing to just a few, but that is no reason to throw the baby out with the bath water. Govt supported and fed it when they were suppose to be the one protecting us from monopolies. Basically bought off by unions or businesses. We are now falling behind in about every category due to successful demonization of America- hip to hate America.

EXCEPTIONAL American's did NOT excessively consume intoxicating liquors or any liquids!! Just because the Country is exceptional, does NOT mean all individuals within that Country ARE!! But the behavior of the FEW, created the preception of need for regulation; and prohibition was excessive regulation. Every town in the world, no matter how small, has their "town drunks" who engage in lawless behavior; even towns of a few hundred people, have their drunk or drunks!! Do you expect a Country of MILLIONS of people, to not have INDIVIDUALS who behave irresponsibly? If you find that Country, I believe you should name it HEAVEN!!

I personally don't have a drink very often, but I DO know people who have a couple drinks daily, to relax. Some drink wine, others Scotch, and some just two or three beers; and they NEVER act disorderly or lawless!!

Honestly, would you want to control these people's responsible FREE WILL, because of the actions of those who refuse to use in moderation and act decent? Again, this is different that the narcotics debate, because people CAN consume a few drinks; without being intoxicated!!

Does that mean that I, as a responsible adult, can't have a drink?

We abolished slavery but sadly it still exists in the world today. From his logic no country has ever been exceptional because none is without similar errors. He does confuse perfect with exceptional, because all countries have errors but we are exceptional because we addressed the injustice whereas many others still have the problem. Dems don't want Americans to have a national identity- Pelosi and Reid have said as much. They have watched too much Star Trek and believe we are citizens of the planet- not any particular country. They believe we should not have a border or any particular national identity-especially Americs which they see as an imperialistic satan.
