University name horrid

  • Follow Letters

I just watched an ad in which Georgia Regents University claims that it won two NCAA golf championships.

I beg to differ. Augusta State University won the championships. GRU had nothing to do with it, and I would wager that the trophies say “Augusta State University.”

This may be beating a dead horse, but let’s do it. When the names of ASU and the Medical College of Georgia were changed, so much history was simply thrown away. MCG began in 1828 – thrown away. ASU can trace its beginnings to at least 1925, and according to some accounts even further back – thrown away. I graduated from Augusta College when it was a two-year college. My diploma says “Augusta College.”

The name GRU is a monstrosity. The powers-that-be need to go back to the drawing board and come up with a name that preserves the history and heritage of Augusta College and the Medical College of Georgia.

Agree

Actually, Azziz did cave in about the Medical College of Georgia name. It remains. Azziz logic says it should have become GRU Medical School, but he couldn't swing it. I have absolutely no doubt the university name will be changed back one day to ASU. Azziz is already applying for new jobs as he feels the anger in Augusta.

Augusta

It's been GRU for going on 2 years now. Move on. While we waste time complaining about a name, that energy could be used elsewhere.

Names don't make

Names don't make universities. Universities make names. The merger was done with the intent of moving ASU+GHSU into a full fledged research university. This task will require at least a decade, maybe two, and lots of investment from the state. If successful, it WILL make the name. At least that is the idea.

Now, the state is NOT investing in GRU growth necessary to make it a research university, and changes in policy at the hospital are losing money, and increases in tuition to support the administration load of Azziz are decreasing undergraduate enrollment. It is too soon to say it will fail, but there are certain steps that MUST be turned around.

To pja5529

pja5529, you sound like Hillary Clinton; guess the two of you have the same view on things that go terribly wrong.

I'm nothing like Clinton...just have better things to worry about than a NAME.

A name is a legacy and a heritage

Georgia Regents University has neither, at this point, and in many ways is creating a fairly negative impression for the name to hand forward.

And unless Riverman has a really, really inside source, Richardo isn't applying elsewhere. If anything, the hostility he's eliciting just hardens his resolve to do everything he intends to us, with new things to add to the list as time goes on.

Fiat, you know better than I

Fiat, you know better than I do about things going on there. I was referring to his past application at the new Texas med school. His name also popped up on the Florida list somehow.

Better Name just there for the Taking

Mayberry RFD Univertisy!

Dragging ASU kicking and screaming into association with a real graduate institution and giving it a name the Regents need to support if only for their own self-esteem is the best thing that ever happened to whatever you want to recall that dead-and-buried institution as.
