GOP should reconsider

  • Follow Letters

Compassionate conservatism, a rallying cry not too long ago of the Republican Party – what has happened to it?

The Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare, aimed to cover everyone. For the poorest, it relied on moving them into Medicaid, along with the money to pay for it. However, the U.S. Supreme Court surprised everyone by deciding that states may decline the Medicaid transfer.

About half the states, all run by “new” Republicans, considered it and decided against the transfer. This includes our two, Georgia and South Carolina. Without Medicaid, the poorest in these states in no way can afford health care insurance, so for them, they will use emergency rooms and go home to die. So much for our supposedly world-class health-care system. For those interested in business, our hospitals will really suffer without Medicaid for these people.

Republicans are hoping this off-year election will have a typically low turnout, and may strengthen their hold on the U.S. House, and might even give them the U.S. Senate. Their decisions here to ignore the poorest should make it obvious that the current Republican Party cares not a whit about them.

We should expect the Democratic Party, then, to remind potential voters that Republicans are unworthy of their votes, particularly those of the poor, giving strong ammunition in efforts to get more people registered to vote this summer, and to vote in November as though their lives depended on it, as they very well may.

Unless Republicans reconsider and accept their poorest citizens into Medicaid, they will be blamed for the truly horrible consequences. They should not believe they can avoid blame, as the transfer is an essential part in getting to universal care. If they refuse, they may not recover their place in the minds of us all, for what they have done in their hatred for “Obamacare.” And we need a nearly equal two-party system.

Victor Reilly

Aiken, S.C.

For those who aren't quite

For those who aren't quite among the poorest of the poor, it also prevents you from receiving tax credits that were intended to help make premiums more affordable. On a sliding scale, they go up to 400% of the poverty level so the GOP is cheating middle class workers in a family of four, with an income of up to $89,400 out of the tax credits. Don't worry, corporations and the wealthy still get every tax break they can think of (how else could Mitt have $20 million to $102 million in an IRA?), but for those that have to work for a iiving, "No tax breaks for you." Spit out a kid, you get a tax break, but because they HATE Obama withh all of their heart and soul and are willing to play with the lives of the people of their states, they'll do anything do make the ACA fail. The money is there. We're all paying taxes for it. It's just Nathan, Nikki, and all of the party before people GOP governors would rather have their constituents go without medications, suffer through long painful illnesses, even go through prolonged painful deaths than to offer them that little stinking tax break that IS THE LAW so they can afford health insurance. They claim to be Christians? My rear end. No God fearing Christian would knowingly allow people to suffer when THEY KNOW THERE"S A PAID FOR PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS THEM TO GET HEALTH INSURANCE, but they're just playing party politics and don't give a **** about people. They should be ashamed to set foot in a church. Do they actually believe God cares about Republican or Democrat instead of caring about saving people from illness? They have (or had until Nathan took his usual cowards way out and gave the power to the General Assembly) to help the sick and yet walked away and turned their heads. When they meet God and he asks, "You had the ability to provide medicine and healthcare to tens of thousands of people who were poor and struggling, and bring relief to the suffering and dying and what did you do?" I'd love to hear the answer from Nathan and Nikki, and see how happy the man who healed the sick for free is about it.

Government Doesn't Equal Jesus

"I'd love to hear the answer from Nathan and Nikki, and see how happy the man who healed the sick for free is about it."

The federal government taking by force from those who produce is not Jesus working miracles by a long shot. The difficult concept for liberals to grasp is someone always has to pay.

Why is it, that even after 6 years of Obama and his minions; republicans still get the blame for the "wealthy" getting tax breaks?? This should prove to everyone that this is nothing but a political WMD for the left!! Obama had the house and senate his first two years and could have stoppled ALL those evil tax breaks, but what did he do? He increased them!! But he still gets a pass by the left like Bod!! You will never hear them mention his name in regards to tax breaks for the wealthy!! Why? Because they couldn't care less about the poor!! It's about political WMD's!! The left USES the poor like a cheap suit!!

With the left, all they have to do is SAY they are for someone or something!! They don't have to actually be for them, but just say they are!! The left expects that is enough!!

You guys are so predictable!!

Why is it so hard to understand that corporations do not pay taxes? Taxes to a business are just like any other expense from pencils to electricity. In the end, the consumer of that company's product or service is the one that actually pays the taxes. If taxes go up, eventually the cost of the good or service produced by that company will go up too.

Big banners should go up across America

We have to pass it to see what is in it
If you like your Dr you can keep him
If you like your insurance you can keep it

Ain't it interesting how freely and eagerly the left....

Ain't it interesting how freely and eagerly the left wants to spend other people's money in the name of "compassion" for the "poor"?

NOBODY in the US is denied healthcare. It is the law that they have to be treated if they go to the hospital. Contrary to the propaganda put forth by the left Obamacare and Romneycare in MA have increased the number of people going to the ER. As a matter of fact, numerous ERs in MA have closed down as a result.

The left acts as if any money coming from the federal government is "free money". They have no concept of where federal money comes from. It comes from the producers of the country. The 50% in this country who pay income taxes to support the moochers.

Does and should everyone in America have the same level and quality of healthcare? No! Like everything else in a free enterprise system you should get the level of service for which you can afford.

There is nothing in The Constitution that guarantees healthcare. It is only given by benevolence of the producers. But like everything else given to someone who doesn't have to pay for it the receivers begin to expect it as an "entitlement''.

If you talk with people in the healthcare industry many of those who have direct contact with the public they will tell you the most obnoxious and belligerent are those who are getting it free as an "entitlement". They have the attitude of "I'm owed this." The more you give the "poor" the more they expect.

You are correct. With liberals all that is required is "good intentions" never mind that the results make everything worse. I have heard many Obama supporters attempt to defend his failures with " at least he cares" or "at least he tried".

Well well well, yes more

Well well well, yes more government money spent, more waste and endless stupidity. Does Mr Reilly really think we need more of that? Interesting article in Wall Street Journal, for those that are dumb enough to follow the lame stream alphabet soup news, Health Care (dot).gov is being rebuilt or renovated AGAIN. Yes this web site has already cost the tax payer well over $ 600 million dollars and it looks like more well be spent. So let me get this right Mr Reilly, you want to to expand government health care when this bunch of losers can't get a web site built, can't reform or fix the existing government run health care system, the VA? So yes let's expand what already doesn't work! LOL

And Bod says "the money is

And Bod says "the money is there". Where is the money Bod? You mean the money coming out of MIDDLE CLASS taxpayers pockets in addition to their ALREADY 50% higher health insurance costs. And how long will that phantom federal money be there....AND WHO THE HELL WILL PAY IT WHEN THE FEDERAL MONEY RUNS OUT? And oh yeh......did you mention that "the money is there" is NOT really there because Obamacare has already been shown to be on track to COST US TWICE WHAT WAS PROJECTED. So in reality.....THE MONEY IS NOT THERE.

I just can't understand why anyone thinks the MIDDLE CLASS should pay for everyone's health care when the ACA has made the costs of health insurance so high that the middle class is struggling to pay for THEIR OWN health insurance.

The ACA (Obmacare) is a double barreled shotgun pointed at MIDDLE CLASS families. Pay MORE for yours AND pay for theirs AND, as usual, THEY get everything for FREE. If THEY want health insurance, take the premiums out of their WELFARE CHECKS, FOOD STAMPS, AND SECTION 8 SUBSIDIES. I can no longer afford to keep them fat, dumb, and HEALTHY.

Mr. Reilly like most democrats never saw a freebee they didn't like. Forget that the people paying for it never qualify for it. That doesn't bother him or them. They only care about the moochers of society so they can get them to vote democrat.

More dithering from the Progressive Left

"For the poorest, it relied on moving them into Medicaid, along with the money to pay for it. ". I would suggest that this is just another flaw in the full of flaws ACA. Maybe if the President released more Guantanamo Bay war criminals, we would all join hands and sing kumbaya.

Historylover, care to back up your ad hominem attack with documentation? I can document the fact that the ACA web site has cost over $ 600 million and is undergoing the second revision since Nov because it doesn't work. Here's the deal: John Boehner
Unpublished

Here's the deal: John Boehner is the most right - wing speaker in history. He's a corporate still whose biggest accomplishment is forcing a fight over the debt limit that downgraded the country's credit rating. Voters have seen what Boehner has to offer and they don't like it and Democrats are set to make big gains in House races across the country this November. You've seen the extreme agenda the most extreme I've ever seen - being pushed by Republican governors blocking the enrollment of Medicaid for those who meet the federal income requirement. Republicans in Congress over the last four years: voted 50 times to repeal President Obama's healthcare law, defunding planned parenthood, cutting Social Security, privatizing Medicare and end unemployment benefits. If you're a reciepent of any one of these benefits, and you been denied Medicaid, unemployment insurance exhausted, you need to get out in full force in November and vote so Georgians can show one - term Gov. Nathan Deal the exit. How you retaliate against these right - wing politician is by exercise your right to vote, no talking with the 'Party of No' hurt them at the voting booth in November. Go Jason Carter!

We need a nearly equal 2party

We need a nearly equal 2party system.. That's the problem we do and it's why we have a govt that is bloated wasteful, elitist and 17.6 trillion in debt. No one represents the tax payers anymore, we have a selfish winey class that demands more and does nothing. And both parties cater to these because now they represent almost the majority. Where are there any honest people in politics telling the truth , we are almost ruined and morally and fiscally bankrupt. Yep thanks to the 2 party system.

The Republican Party

The Republican Party controlled both the House and Senate in Atlanta and they stayed up late before the session end coming up with new special interest tax breaks, 'Guns Everywhere' bills, drug testing recipients, cut funding for public schools, health care and other vital needs and to make it even worse Tea Party Gov. Nathan Deal signed off on it. It's time for a change in priorities. This fall is voters best chance to send Tea Party governors who rode the high tide wave in 2010 home.

Guns everywhere? Aren't you exaggerating a bit? And why are you worried so much about guns? Shouldn't you be more worried about the mentally ill? The career criminals? Etc.?

Drug testing recipients. Recipients of what, SNAP, etc.? So, you don't want any attempt made to prod people into getting off drugs? How compassionate of you.

Cutting funding... Would you be in favor of the state providing anyone who signs up a $20,000/month stipend to cover expenses?
