Racism abounds in town

  • Follow Letters

This is the time of year to visit the forest and see the flowering trees and bushes that appear beautiful and docile.

However beware, for things are more dangerous and deceitful than they appear. So it is with the forest it is with society.

Every two or four years signs pop up on lawns and at street corners touting smiling faces and promises that veil monsters, fakes and feigns.

Take my home town of good old Edgefield, S.C. Visitors are bombarded with advertisements and billboards purporting how fair and historic we are. How sociable and successful our everyday lives are.

Yet today a walk through town yields the ugly truth of a culture that is a relic of racism and prejudice. A throwback to a time when backdoor lines and offensive signs were commonplace. Bigoted language and mannerism (kicking, etc.) were ubiquitous.

If you start with the mayor, he is white. County treasurer, white. County coroner, white. Probate judge, white, too. Two magistrate judges, both white. Almost every elected and appointed official here is white, and it’s considered normal in this neck of the woods. All the doctors and dentists, police and sheriff’s deputies (except tokens) are white, the businesspeople and property owners with few exceptions are all white folks even though blacks make up half the population.

We have an influx of rich people building houses big enough to drive a car in and turn around to exit and all of them are, you guessed it, white.

These fancy communities are guarded and groomed 24/7 by black and brown fools who are equally as disgusted and distrusting of us as the owners. Want to see the sentiments hidden below the skin? Get caught with a fishing pole at one of their ponds without permission. You’ll think they own the Los Angeles Clippers.

If the ratio was reverse wonder what would happen? Oh, I know because it already happened back before Hamburg was renamed North Augusta – a black massacre occurred. Blacks haven’t run anything since, but away.

Tunk Martin

Edgefield, S.C.

How racist is Edgefield today?

A Wikipedia article citing data from the 2000 census shows this racial makeup for Edgefield's population: 38.82% White, 59.92% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.18% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races, and 4.47% Hispanic or Latino.

Yet Mr. Martin says all the town's doctors and dentists are white as are most of its business people. Since doctors and dentists can set up practices anywhere (or at least they could before Obamacare), could the lack of black doctors and dentists in Edgefield be due to the black community's lack of support for them?

As for the abundance of elected white officials, could the reason be the black community's failure to vote?

The terrible Hamburg Massacre, which Mr. Martin refers to, took place in the 1870s. Why should we think such a massacre is likely to take place today? Certain things in Mr. Martin's letter don't add up.

perhaps the government can declare eminent domain

over all the nice houses, and redistribute them more fairly?
wonder if education and hard work should
be redistributed more fairly, too?
meanwhile, over the entire country
young black males are less than 3% of the population
and commit over 50% of all violent crimes
here's an idea- work during the day and go to school at night
get a degree and some skills
marry then have kids
don't do drugs, don't drink alcohol to excess
go to church on Sunday and Wednesday
work very hard, the same hours as when you were going to school
and after a few years, you, too, can have one of those big ole houses
with the big garage and fishing pond
works every time...
meanwhile, over the entire country...

If the ratio was reverse(d)?

You wouldn't have massacres, you would have Detroit, Birmingham, Chicago. Perhaps you would have a Paine College or South Carolina State. All of them rife with corruption and requiring the taxpayer to bail them out. Even better yet, go right down the street and see the problems, on nearly every street corner, in the town of Johnston. The people that pay the taxes for that small town will flee VERY soon, and then it will become the very next Detroit. Need I go on?

You are the racist because you see EVERYTHING through a racist's eyes. When I go to my eye doctor, it does not concern me that he is of Indian descent. My vascular surgeon was Hispanic. My primary care physician is white. I do not worry. I just want the best person qualified for the job.

Racism present in Edgefield? Yes, but from whom? Mr. Martin?

Also, Wealth envy present??? Absolutely!! It's quite clear that Mr. Martin would love to live in a town or world, dominated by black folks; because that is exactly how he sees the world, through color!! It's also quite clear that he envies wealthy people and their building of nice homes!! But he probably doesn't have the personal drive to achieve similar results.

I just have a hard time understanding why the Chronicle would post such a shallow, unintelligent letter!!! Mr. Martin's accusations are so vague, shallow and full of racism, I can't believe they published it!!

He talks about white people in ALL these government positions; but doesn't talk about whether they are doing a good job. Well, ARE THEY? He hasn't accused them of indecent, immoral or illegal acts; only of being WHITE!! If they're people of integrity and honor, can white people not represent black people?

Is the Mayor doing a good job? County treasurer? Coroner or Probate Judge? What kind of job are they doing? If they are doing a good job, would you like to replace them; simply because they are white? Would you be willing to replace them with a non-white that did NOT do as good a job?

"All the doctors and dentists, police and sheriff’s deputies (except tokens) "

What does this mean? So there are some black deputies, but they are just tokens? Is this your way of saying they are "uncle toms" or just placed there for deception to give the illusion of not being racist? If so, where is your evidence of this?

Also, has anyone ran against them in the elections?

Mr. Martin; I can't believe you had the gall to write this letter and request it be published!! You exposed your complete racism to this area and anyone who reads this racist garbage!! You bash people for nothing more than being white, not listing a single wrongdoing, which they committed!! Their only misdeed is being white!! If that isn't racism, I have no idea what is!!

And the Chronicle actually published this junk? Without a single legitimate allegation, besides being white? Are you kidding me? I certainly believe in all letters being considered, not just conservatives. But I would think the letter needs some sort of foundation or substance, besides to attack people of ANY COLOR, just for their COLOR!!

Once again, Mr. Martin has NOT accused a single person of doing anything immoral, illegal or even accused them of doing a bad job!! He has only accused them of being WHITE!!! And the letter got printed!!

Was it a really bad news day?

I wonder why all of the politicians and elected officials in Edgefield are white when 60 % of the population is black? Either blacks are not seeking these positions or many blacks are voting for the racist whites.

I think the writer is confused....

Racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

Using this definition, the writer didn't give one example of racism currently occurring in his community in his letter. On the other hand, here's another definition:

Jealous - resentment against a rival, a person enjoying success or advantage, etc., or against another's success or advantage itself.

Therefore, my conclusion is, the writer is a hater.

What a racist comment. Note

What a racist comment. Note he is distinguishing and talking about "a race" and making a straw man fallacy that because certain positions aren't held by blacks it must be racism???? I guess he doesn't know Augusta is predominately black and we have black every occupation you can think of. Well I just read that Edgefield is close to 60% black. So i guess in Tunk's mind there are a lot of racist blacks who keep electing white people into office. Odd isn't it.

But then racial hatred has been spread by the liberals, democrats and black leaders even in black churches for the last 50 yrs.

I suppose this is as good of a time as any...

You were very brave to write that letter, Mr. Martin. And you are completely right.

To my great disappointment, the Augusta Chronicle did not publish an editorial on the highly controversial and staggeringly brilliant article by Ta-Nehisi Coates called "The Case for Reparations", published on The Atlantic on May 21st.

Probably because it was too long (150,000 words in 10 sections), has big words, and because it is a complete evisceration of any and all arguments against the existence of white supremacy in America.

Let's talk about

Let's talk about reparations-let's see first the native american indian, african-americans, chinese- railroads, Japanese-american japanese mistreated by our govt WWII, then the irish-lots of violence against them in early america, etc, etc, etc,
You can't fix the past just move forward to address the problem-like Hillary Clinton argues-what difference does it make now-we just need to fix it.
Karradur you should qualify-"I think Tunk and I are correct". As in the both of your opinion.
"And that’s ultimately the problem with reparations arguments that are not based upon the people causing the harm paying the people directly harmed by specific conduct soon after the conduct is remedied.

If you can’t answer the question of why a Vietnamese boat person has to pay reparations for the conduct of white plantation owners more than a century earlier, then you can’t make the argument.

If you can’t answer the question of why two successful black doctors living in a fashionable suburb should get reparations paid for by the white children of Appalachia, then you can’t make the argument.

If you can’t answer the question of why the adult black recent immigrant from Paris should be pay or be paid reparations based on the color of his skin for crimes committed in a land he did not grow up in, then you can’t make the argument.

And what about the increasing number of children of mixed race?

And I could go on and on."
The author of this believes it is permanent inquisition and guilt commission.
So apparently there is some diversity in opinions on the subject.

It's sad that Martin's letter only exposes himself as a racist living in Edgefield. He has serious wealth envy and my advise to him would be to go out and work hard and maybe he can run for office and get one of those houses you can drive in. Why doesn't he open up a business himself and reverse the white business owner monopoly?

No I just read the article. Nothing new that I hadn't read before. t agree blacks have been mistreated (that is why years ago I taught in a historic black college) but he doesn't make a compelling case for reparations of past grievances. Like Hillary said-what difference does it make now-past is past. Let's fix the problems which we have addressed much since the 60's.

how about a free education? we can let the democrat party run it, because we all (wink wink) know (nod nod) they're not racist
they would never focus on the teacher's unions and let kids graduate when they can barely read and ruin the system because of busing...
hmmm... scratch that... black and white kids should get vouchers to be spent at the school of their choice... and they can all be doctors and dentist and lawyers and live on the shiny house on the hill

How would reparations be

How would reparations be implemented-a tax on all ethnicities except black -so white/hispanics, asian, etc will pay a tax. How will that pass through the courts? Wow because of wealth inequality there are a lot of poor people-most are white in absolute numbers. I guess they can afford a new tax along with the ACA taxes. Now we have to define "black" -is this african ancestry and what percent african do they need to be-it can't be the color of skin-that doesn't determine "race". I guess since Obama is only half black so he only gets half reparations? Reparations is a fool's folly. It is just so silly. The goal should be equality and not reparations-you can't fight discrimination with discrimination. Reparations acts like blacks are the only ethnicity to suffer-that is false.

Innumerable atrocities have occurred over the millennia. You learn from them, and move on.

Who should be the first to pay reparations? Should it not be actual affluent black African families? Whose ancestors kidnapped and sold their own people for filthy lucre?

Should it be the family of Anthony Johnson, one of the first know slave owners in America? An indentured servant who gained his freedom in 1621 and then became a massive slave owner?? Shouldn't his family be forced to pay ALL those who were held by him, reparations? He was kidnapped in Angola by tribes of his OWN RACE, and sold to ARAB slave traders!!! You get that? ARABS!!! ARABS were the originator's of slavery!! Slavery existed LONG before it came to the shores of America!! EVERY COUNTRY has been founded upon a form of slavery; including Egypt, which is the oldest Country in existence which still maintains it's original name!!

The best thing to do is learn form history and don't repeat it; but get over it and stop with the division!! There isn't a single person alive today in America who has been forced into legal slavery!!
