Inmates get Obamacare

  • Follow Letters

When I begin to think the federal government cannot get any worse, nor could the Obama administration sink any lower, they do.

In a little-noticed outcome of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, jails and prisons nationwide are signing up inmates for health insurance under the law, taking advantage of the expansion of Medicaid that allows states to extend coverage to single and childless adults, which is a major part of the prison population.

Ohio is one of a growing number of states working to enroll robbers, rapists and murderers into Obamacare.

Starting in January, states that agreed to the Medicaid expansion offered by Obamcare are required to expand Medicaid eligibility to include “all non-elderly low-income adults.” That means many criminals who are in or leaving prison and jail will be eligible. San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi has said he wants to make sure no offender leaves his jail without it.

Not surprisingly, NBC and ABC ignored the news that taxpayers’ money would be going to the health care of convicted criminals.

The Obama administration bragged about the 7.1 million who have applied for coverage since Obamacare went into effect Oct. 1, but Fox News legal analyst Peter Johnson Jr. referred to one study showing that one-third of new Medicaid enrollees will be inmates, parolees or people just released from prison.

Is this a great country or what?

Who do you think pays for

Who do you think pays for their health care now, the Easter Bunny?

Taxpayers pay for their health care, just like always.

This is a letter about NOTHING.

Just for the numbers

Prisoners do not need Obamacare because they get all their healthcare free at the prison. If they need surgery they are brought to the hospital and then discharged back to the prison. All courtesy of your tax dollars. The only reason they we resigned up to ObamCare was to make the numbers "look good". Just more lies and more cover ups from this pathetic administration. It's all a bunch of lies.

corgimom. I am not at all surprised that you fail once again to understand. You are correct the states pay for healthcare of prisoners. But now the prisons are signing up prisoners and those that are leaving prison on Medicaid and that means when those rapist, murders, thieves and child molester get out of prison and go back to raping, killing, stealing and molesting children their healthcare will be pay for by the taxpayers.

It is all about DOJ's plan to

It is all about DOJ's plan to reinstate all ex-prisoners with full citizenship and no restrictions. Murder, bank robber, pedophile who serve time will gain their vote back, no housing restrictions, right to arms, all rights. Holder considers it discriminatory so all rights should be reinstated and why not pay for their health care and give them a bunch of freebies too. Obama is an admitted criminal from his youth and he sympathizes with them.

Let me get this straight...

Let me get this straight. I'm in prison because of the sorry life choices I've made and because I'm semi-worthless I've never had a decent job that allowed me to afford health insurance; then, some dude comes into the prison and has me sign up for "free" Obamacare and I have ''free'' insurance for life even when I get out?

Let me ask you a question. Who do you think I'm going to vote for when it comes to voting time---the folks who give me my "free" health insurance/health care or the folks who say I should be self reliant and support myself rather than sucking the teats of the sugar-daddy government? There ain't no way I'm not gonna vote for the freebie-givers.

Now, you understand why this prisoner requirement is in there. They already had "free" medical care but there was no tie in to one political party. There is now. It's all about power.

State prisoners healthcare is

State prisoners healthcare is paid from the state budget. Payment now shifts to the Federal budget. Use the old noggin to figure out why this is happening.

This mess called Obamacare

This mess called Obamacare will never get unwound. They have FORCED too many worthy people into it by disqualifying their insurance plans for the 'Pubs to have any hope of repealing it outright and starting over.

I suppose they could "freeze" it in place until some semblance of a free market gets restored and people have other choices.

Not all prison healthcare is

Not all prison healthcare is "free" as people think. I know this from firsthand experience of knowing someone who served his sentence in a state prison. His mother was expected to pay for his medication and other medical services. Although, that doesn't change my opinion on Obamacare as the taxpayers will still have to foot the bill for deadbeats.

This letter is not well-reasoned.

When a person is incarcerated, they are still a human being ("God's creature" for the religiously inclined). We can no more deny them medical care while in prison than we can deny them food and water. The Constitution recognizes this by banning cruel and unusual punishment. So medical care during imprisonment is a no-brainer.

When a person is no longer incarcerated, they have paid their debt to society. They should be allowed to rejoin society as productive citizens and not eternal pariahs. If the expansion of coverage under Obamacare results in coverage for eligible individuals, then so be it. Again, they have paid their debt and should not be punished by the government beyond their sentence. So medical care after imprisonment (if eligible) is a no-brainer.

What is the author suggesting? That we either let people die in prison due to lack of medical care or that we subject them to punishment above and beyond what the government initially decided their punishment should be?

KSL and edcushman

You're not keeping in mind that LIBERALS, blame us for them being felons in the first place!! So, they get out of prison as felons, therefore they can't get a decent paying job. So, it's OUR fault they can't survive, because our oppressive system is rigged against them. Therefore we must be responsible for their healthcare and anything else they desire!! We must provide them with a LIFE, because they can't do so for themselves. THAT is the way most liberals see it!! They ALWAYS fight for WRONG and stand against what's right!!!

"The Constitution recognizes this by banning cruel and unusual punishment. So medical care during imprisonment is a no-brainer."

You've OBVIOUSLY never worked in the jail or prison system!! Yes, we should and DO give medical treatment to inmates. BUT.........We have THOUSANDS, if not tens of thousands of inmates, who when they were on the streets, couldn't or wouldn't get treatment and they MADE IT JUST FINE!! But, when they get locked up, they automatically DEMAND the treatment they've needed to two years, but managed to survive without!!

Just like one of our local drunks!! When he is on the street, the ONLY medication he takes is beer and liquor!! His profession is panhandling at local stores!! But every single time he gets locked up, he ABSOLUTELY HAS to have his medication and dental work!! When he is locked up, he simply can't live without his medication and partials. But when he is on the street he NEVER takes any of them or does any kind of dental work.

Again, I'm not saying they should be denied care, but MANY people take full advantage of it and it costs us billions, every year!!

Unpublished

It's simple for those who are used to the way this President cooks the books. There are approximately 2.5 million inmates in US prisons that already receive healthcare via the taxpayers. So.....if you sign them up on the exchanges, they will be enrolled in medicaid, therefore STILL on the taxpayer dole, but you get the added benefit of having 2.5 million people that the President can tout in his "success story" of the ACA.

Do you realize who are paying for this? Oh yes, we paid for basic health care in the past, but do you realize what we're going to pay for now?

Do you realize...DO YOU REALIZE that because I may have a great health insurance plan, that I will have to PAY A PENALTY, because my insurance is "too good"?

Informed people that support this plan are scum!

Once prisoners get out of

Once prisoners get out of prison, they are just like everybody else. They get sick and they have accidents. And then, because they don't have legitimate jobs, they are indigent and they go to the ER at the hospital.

In fact, they get sick more frequently, because of the lifestyles that they lead.

Ed Cushman, you don't seem to understand that we already ARE paying for their care, and paying for outrageously expensive ER visits.
You are misinformed if you think that we aren't already paying for them; but we are paying far more than we should.

I'm an informed person, and it's far better for an insurance company or even Medicaid to pay for their doctor visits than for people like US to pay for astronomically priced ER care!

How much do you want to pay for their care? Do you want to pay $100 for a doctor visit, or do you want to pay $1500 for an ER visit?

USE YOUR COMMON SENSE.

Most prisoners are sick when

Most prisoners are sick when they come into prison, and sick when they leave it. A criminal lifestyle isn't conducive to health.

As for dental care, it is now known that dental problems lead to very expensive medical problems, plus the prisoners use that as an excuse to get pain meds. It is cheaper to do the dental work than it is to treat health problems.

Dental work is cheap in prisons. I knew a woman that was the past president of the American Dental Association, and that was a prison dentist, and she told me that without the overhead of a practice, the actual cost of prison dental work is very, very low, it's not comparable to what we pay for dental work, so that our dentists can drive BMWs and Jaguars.

Oh, and Ed Cushman? If the former prisoner, parolee, or probationer is the custodial parent of a child, they ALREADY get Medicaid, are you aware of that?

Again, when I lived in De Hood in Columbia, I was one of the few people there that didn't have a police record. Lots of the mothers did, and they trotted off to the hospital whenever they wanted to. This is nothing new, you act like this is shocking, breaking news, and it's not.

Informed people who support this are the zero payment people or the progressives, some who don't realize they are actually supporting fascists. They are too uneducated, or unconcerned, or out right ignorant.

I fear the most are of the outright ignorant class. What happens to them in the future I should have empathy for them . But I won't, because they had abilityto be educated. They had us to help them understand what was happening.

Inmate Care

Inmates have their healthcare paid for now by taxpayers, the taxpayers of the county they are incarcerated in or the state prison system they are incarcerated in. The difference with enrolling them in Obamacare is that evry taxpayer in the country gets to pay for it instead of just the local taxpayers.

Also Georgia has it in law that if the inmate has insurance then the insurance company has to pay their share but any co-pays or anything not covered by their insurance is still paid for by the taxpayerrs.
