Abandon collectivism

  • Follow Letters

Our president’s current fascination with the minimum wage and payment for overtime is a perfect example of why our country is soaked in debt. To the collectivist, our nation is not 50 individual states with a multitude of cultures and experiences, but one homogenous body yearning for Washington, D.C., to solve its problems.

To the collectivist, Alabama is no different than Alaska. South Carolina surely is the image of South Dakota. And of course the needs of Augusta, Ga., are exactly the same as Augusta, Maine.

To the collectivist, only an intrusive federal government knows what is best for education, energy, wages, medicine, our environment and on and on.

Washington considers citizens so feeble that they are required to regulate the design of our toilets and our school lunch menus, and mandate the types of light bulbs we may buy.

This is not the essence of our nation. Power was to be held by the people first, the state house next and lastly Washington. Our nation was conceived on the notion that the central government should do only what states and individuals could not. Our Constitution begins with the words “We the people,” not “I, Obama” or “I the Congress.”

Sadly, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Too many able-bodied individuals look to Washington for retirement, medical care, subsidized housing, school lunches and many other life obligations. Too many individuals, unlike previous generations, see dependency as something to be embraced. The parents of my generation would have felt shame, but no more.

There are multiple negative consequences for this culture. For instance, Washington must confiscate such a large percentage of individual wealth, while communities struggle to find adequate funds to educate their children, maintain infrastructure and pay our first responders adequately.

We certainly have lost our way. Only a new generation of citizens who reject collectivism and embrace individualism can rescue our country.

Greedy and Selfish

More conservative bunk.

What sort of mindset must one have to think that helping others is wrong?

If the wealthiest Americans and corporations paid their fair share of taxes, instead of hiding funds through trickery and deceit, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. There would be plenty of money available for social services, infrastructure, education and health care.

But in the conservative's mind, greed is good.

If EVERYBODY paid taxes then

If EVERYBODY paid taxes then every body would care how the money was spent. As it is 50% pay all the taxes with the top 10% paying more than 40% of the tax bill picking up far more than their fair share. The bottom 50% have their hand out to be greased by the governmeto vote for more money for them delves. When America is bankrupt those on the bottom that suckle on government are going to get hit worse!

What sort of mindset must one have to think it is ok to help others, but you must confiscate someone else's money, against their will, under penalty of prison in order to do it?

Fair? By who's measure. Is it fair that there are people who no only don't pay ANY federal tax, but in fact get money back in the form of EIC? How is THAT fair? It is utter nonsense to say that those who are already paying the lion's share of the taxes, still aren't paying their "fair share."

Bees in Mao Suits

Ah, the progressive liberal theme is to make everyone a simple worker bee supporting the queen government. But the problem is those who don't work still demand the honey and they keep increasing in number. They'll sting you to death to get what they want.

Stalin starved 5 million peasants

because of collectivism
starved- and all its attendant atrocities
wonder why no Hollywood movie about that?
and Mao killed more
many in America aren't citizens of America
so much as clients of a government
their votes are bought with generous handouts
from taxes paid by actual citizens
all organized by what Lenin called a "vanguard elite"
or what we call the Ivy league schools
and it will fail
it's already failing, as evidenced by
THREE SCHOOLS IN RICHMOND COUNTY
HAD ZERO STUDENTS PASS THE AP EXAMS LAST YEAR
millions of kids being intellectually starved in a world
that demands a good education
those kids will become our own peasants
"...the longer an empire is in existence, the more time the successfully sinister have to find ways to subvert the system and insert themselves into positions of power."
substitute bureaucracy (or corporation) for empire, and you have our education department
it is beyond repair
poor kids should have the same options as rich kids concerning education
maybe not the full gamut of choice, but choice, still
they should not be forced to attend bad schools
they should have the opportunity to see just how much they can accomplish
with only their own faults or weaknesses as their limitations
because of their historical mistreatment and tragedies, black kids are an easy target
for the "successfully sinister" to use for their own benefit
and that is the embodiment of racism
and this is one of the saddest things printed in the paper, ever
THREE SCHOOLS IN RICHMOND COUNTY
HAD ZERO STUDENTS PASS THE AP EXAMS LAST YEAR!

oh specsta, must you, too, be so obtuse?

would you donate to a charity that only gave 50% of donations to the actual poor?
would you demean people who wanted the charity to be more efficient?
you're defending a racist government
but really... what's a democrat to do?

You're correct!! According to specsta and the other government lovers, in order to "help" people, we must continue to feed the government beast!! I would bet they give LESS than 50% to actually help people!! My guess would be that those evil rich republicans have given more to charity and accomplished more good, than specsta and the vast majority of liberals ever dreamed of doing!! But, to liberals charity isn't doing good; if you don't give your money to government, especially lord Obama, you're still doing nothing!!! Liberals love to TALK about doing good and helping people!! Because talking about it, makes people vote for you!! Actually giving to charity and working for charity, without asking anything in return or any acknowledgment of you're works, THAT is true charity!! People should DO GOOD, without ever expecting to be recognized for doing it!!

Specsta says this, "There would be plenty of money available for social services, infrastructure, education and health care."

There SHOULD be plenty of money for that now, if the government would STOP wasteful spending!! Like the hundreds of BILLIONS going to failed green energy companies!! Billions going overseas, some even to the very Country we borrow from!! We borrow from China, then turn around and give them money to help improve their system!! WOW!!

This country has no poor people. They just have a bunch of moochers who refuse to do anything for themselves. Most have lived a lifetime of taking from others because they're too lazy and lack the necessary skills to provide. Their poor life decisions have them in a situation of their own making. Very few are on assistance because of conditions beyond their own choice. I wonder how many kids have been born to unwed uneducated women. I wonder how many people have dropped out of school and lack the skills needed in the job market? I wonder how many are getting assistance because they have an addiction? I wonder how many just are too lazy to do for themselves? Remove these people and give help to the remaining folks who actually deserve some assistance.

If the Congress took 100% of the income of those making more than $250k / yr. and it took all of the profits of fortune 500 corporations and it seized all of the accumulated wealth of all of the country's billionaires it could fund the government for about 3/4 of a year.

It's amazing how clueless liberals like specsta are!

America was founded as a

America was founded as a federal republic and it was a capitalist system till the govt started providing social services for its citizens so now it isn't truly. The USSR was a socialist republic. If we lose one political party then the notion of free and fair elections will be lost and we will be no different than the USSR=a socialist republic.

Spec likely has nothing to

Spec likely has nothing to lose-so it doesn't bother them. But if it was their earnings that they had worked hard for being taken away discriminately he would protest-as anyone. It is easy giving away other peoples money-just look at our government.

"If the wealthiest Americans

"If the wealthiest Americans and corporations paid their fair share of taxes,"

If the OTHER 50% of the country paid ANYTHING AT ALL we would not be having this discussion. I'm tired of toting the load for them. Time to put them all in harness and let them pull THEIR fair share.

There is a big difference between being compassionate and being stupid. A system where half of the people don't pay any federal (and most likely state) taxes is simply stupid.

Excellent, well thought out letter.

To understand the mind of a collectivenist imagine a big puppeteer standing with 50 strings. The puppeteer is the government in DC and each string goes to one of the 50 states. The states move and do only what the DC puppeteer wants and allows.

Why is it "greed" when people want to keep as much of their hard earned money as possible, but it is not "greed" when the government confiscates almost 50% to redistribute as it sees fit to those who don't work or on wasteful programs.

As far as "helping others", in 1965 the poverty rate had been steadily declining for years and was around 19% . It was on a path that today the poverty rate would be around 3%; however, LBJ implemented his ant-poverty program and it the rate now stands at the same 19%. This despite us spending nearly 5 Trillion dollars on the "war on poverty" which currently has 120 programs. What part of "helping others" does not the left understand has ruined at least three generations and continues to ruin additional ones?

I reckon we can look on the positive side that it took us 224 years to get a president as terrible as Obama.

Owensjef3, Stalin starved

Owensjef3, Stalin starved millions to death in the Ukraine. The Ukraine farmers refused to organize collective farms. Russian troops went , took the fall harvest sealed the boarders. Millions died of starvation during winter. The Nazi, being the Nazi , continued the oppression . There was a group of German army soldiers (part of the SS ) who would hunt and shoot civilians. At the end of WW II Stalin hunted down resistance leaders who had fought the Nazi and jailed them or executed them.
