Letter: Book exposes exploitation

  • Follow Letters

My reading addiction has drawn me to read the beautifully written book The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander.

This awesome book relates to a new and unfair incarceration agenda used to place people of color into prisons for extended periods for nonviolent crimes. The author explains in depth how long prison sentences continue to haunt these individuals upon being released from incarceration. These individuals are labeled as felons, making it almost impossible for them to acquire jobs, housing and federal education grants.

Also, Williams writes extensively about the nationwide judicial conspiracy that demeans and humiliates people of color who have been placed in America’s unfair penal system of justice. Is this true justice?

It was interesting to read that the overcrowding of jails and prisons has created a corporate privatization prison system for profit. And these companies are even listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Many Americans are becoming wealthy because of the rapid incarceration of people of color. Of course, this continued unfair incarceration agenda isn’t going to stop, because it has become a multibillion-dollar industry to exploit people of color.

Slavery seems to have again infiltrated America in a big-time way. Don’t accept my word about this issue. Read the book, and you will make the connection to this new style of American exploitation.

I’m elated that President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have spoken out against this new Jim Crow agenda. Apparently they have read the book because they have cited references from it in speeches. They truly get it, and this is some kind of wonderful.

Gee, maybe if criminals

Gee, maybe if criminals didn't break the law they wouldn't go to jail. Theirs a thought for your. Maybe the justice department needs to investigate it's self like the Obama administration investigating it's self's. Obama has been president for five years and helping blacks, nope not part of his agenda. Black community working on fixing black families. Not part of their agenda. Single parent families, higher crime rates, more incarceration, higher drug use etc.all leading to? You got it, jail. But what ever you do don't get an education and conduct yourself properly, you might be called an oreo!

it starts early

the public school curriculum moves on, whether a kid has mastered the subject matter or not
and once a kid falls behind, there are many learning "experts" to help, but the curriculum is the curriculum and the student never catches up
he attends the same school, but it is still "separate and unequal" within his own classroom
and liberals built that
and it contributes to the appalling fact that
young black males are about 3% of our population
and commit over 50% of violent crimes
our racist education system built that
THREE SCHOOLS IN RICHMOND COUNTY
HAD ZERO STUDENTS PASS THE AP EXAMS LAST YEAR!
they've been failing for over 50 years now to educate
it must be doing what it is organized to do
because no one is so sorry that they fail for 50 years

It not that simple, why don't you find out what has actually been happening before you comment. Oh I know its a black issue therefore I must be against it, yet you can worry about American terrorist not receiving a trial. Okay now watch everyone call me the racist. Bring it.

OK, Owensjef3, the government

OK, Owensjef3, the government randomly picks up blacks and puts them in jail? If that isn't true then Blacks are being discriminated in jail sentences. If that is true why do want government to have control of health care, etc. so blacks can be discriminated against more by government. We have had a black President and Black Attorney General for over 5 years and black issues like this haven't even made to the stove let alone a back burner.

I guess it's societies fault

I guess it's societies fault they made the decision to possess narcotics!! I guess it's societies fault they decided to shoot someone, or beat their spouse!! I guess it's our fault they decide to sell drugs!! It's always someone else's fault, that people decide to not follow rules!!

YES, it is that simple!!

I congratulate Mr. Maner on reading in order to become less ignorant. That's why I try to read a lot---to become more informed and become less ignorant on various subjects.

He is so right about the private, for-profit prisons making blacks commit crimes in order to increase their bottom line. Why, just yesterday I was riding on East Boundary Street and saw a big billboard which said:

"People of color! Do your part for the economy. Go commit some crimes and go to jail. This will increase the profits of private prison running companies. Tonight is a good time to start. Do your part tonight!" Underneath it said in smaller letters: "Sponsored by the Association of White Run Prisons"

The Truth: Life is Not Fair

Mr. Maner states repeatedly that the justice system is unfair, using the book he read as inviolable evidence. Commenters have rightfully stated that the system incarcerates those who violate the law. The truth, Mr. Maner, is that life simply is not fair. We are born into circumstances not of our choosing. The best we can do is to do what is right within our life situations. A stable family is the best way to promote moral behavior, but it does not ensure it. Unfortunately, as some have noted above, the black family, so strong in the 40's and 50's, has gradually eroded. We can debate the reasons for this, but we cannot debate the fact that it has occurred. Mr. Maner needs to be "addicted" to reading a bit wider range of topics, opinions, and analyses.

What if these private prisons for profit were black owned? Would that make a difference in the color of the slaves?

Black on Black crime is a

Black on Black crime is a major problem in the black community and I can't see why black leaders want to release these people back into their neighborhoods.
I live in a mixed neighborhood occupied by white and black police officers and these thugs aren't going to come around. But you can bet if they are set free they will go back to da hood and commit more crimes.

Is that what Mr. E. Maner wants?

And if you don't want to go to jail, don't commit crimes. If you don't want to become a felon, don't commit felonies.

There is statistical data that shows when criminals are locked up, crime goes down. This does not stop all crime, but it reduces it. Just like termites, Your neighbor may have them but that does not stop you from ridding your home of them.

Book

When I was in high school I read a book titled How To Lie With Statistics. It was influential and became a cult classic. The book showed how people misuse statistical data in order to influence people and promote agendas.

My point is that just because there are data in a book (a la The New Jim Crow), you cannot trust the conclusion of the author. You've got to dig deeper and use critical thinking skills. It does not appear that the author of this letter has done that.

I Have A Solution!

Release ALL black incarcerated prisoners except those victims involved were not of the black race. Return them back to their society, leave them alone except for crimes that were made to any other than their own race. That would prevent overcrowding of prisons, lower the workload on LEO and the judicial system, no longer could the race issue come into play and over time, this whole problem and issue would solve itself and go away.

If you have a preconceived conclusion (i.e. that the justice system unfairly arrests blacks) then you will believe the statistics that show the disproportionate incarceration of blacks is proof of that, and you will ignore the fact that they committed crimes in order to be put in jail. Scroll up for living proof of this.

Law abiding American citizens will never be able to eradicate the Black on Black crime, no matter what they try to do, Past, Present & Future. So using your great response of "Peace". You are right, Leave the Black to live the way they want and leave them alone.

Do y'all recall within the last few weeks...

Do y'all recall within the last few weeks that Holder and Obama want punishment in schools to be "racially balanced"? They want punishment ratios to be based on the proportions of students race rather than based on who commits infractions. In other words if the student body has 30% blacks then only 30% of the punishments handed out can be to blacks.
