Mayor should be decent

  • Follow Letters

The Augusta mayoral race is not a reality show. Augusta voters must remember they are electing a government leader, not a buffoonish, reality-show celebrity.

That is why a mayoral candidate who has the scent of domestic violence and was featured on the front page of the Jail Report should not be given serious consideration. A mayor with such a dubious distinction would diminish Augusta and be an easy target for local and national ridicule.

Augusta is a respectable city and home of the Masters Tournament, a world-class golf event. Therefore, Augusta deserves a mayor of equal respectability and class. Be wise with your vote.

Augusta Mayoral Race

Fully agree. Are there no vetting requirements for public office in Augusta? Someone with a criminal past or blatant dishonesty or disrespect of laws and local ordinances should not even be allowed to qualify. Since the mayor servers as a representative of ALL Richmond County residents the candidate must be beyond reproach and not necessarily a 'man of the cloth'.

Jail Report
Unpublished

This is why I have a problem with rags like The Jail Report. The person you are referring to was never charged or convicted of any crime, but that does not matter to publications like the JP.

We sure get a crew to pick

We sure get a crew to pick from don't we.

We know "Skybox" will take the perks and campaign money from contractors. That is a fact. We know he had SOME kind of incident with his wife for which you and I would have been LOCKED UP THAT NIGHT but he got preference. And we know he has an explosive temper demonstrated by that incident and some outbursts at commission meetings.

And Cummings....well we know he is not above stretching the law to it's breaking point on licensing of his establishment.

And then we have Davis, whose name I have heard for years....and I know he held an office or two.....but I have never heard anything positive he has done for Augusta and the working taxpayers of this county. He's been kind of like an acceptable black guy space filler but certainly not a barn burner when it comes to doing something.

And I know very little about the two ladies except that one of them was embroiled in some kind of issue with using racial terms while teaching school that apparently offended some folks.

Not much to go on for some of them....not much to choose from for the rest. All of them say they want world peace, apple pie, and ice cream with no specifics except for Alvin who wants to tear down the levy but doesn't say how he would pay for it. Maybe, in one of his temper tantrums, he can just go down there and kick it down.

None of them are talking about property taxes, RAIN TAX, SPLOST, dual system of taxation, sky high garbage fees, and equal distribution of "development" and "redevelopment" money among ALL districts. Well, I guess Alvin said something about not supporting THIS SPLOST, but DID NOT SAY what he would take out and what he would put in......being that he skipped the meeting where they did that kind of thing because he was pouting or something.

C'mon AC.....start asking them SPECIFIC questions and don't let them bluster and bloviate around the questions the TAXPAYERS want the answers to before we make out NEXT mistake. I don't care that they are all black. We can still expect them to have a plan and answer questions can't we? Let's face it, we already know that there is no world peace and not enough pie and ice cream to go around. They cannot give us those things so WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO and HOW THEY ARE GOING TO PAY FOR IT.

Nor does it matter to the

Nor does it matter to the letter writer that at least the subject of his little "jab", when approached by a lawyer trying to bride him over the TEE Center, not only turned the lawyer down, but reported him to authorities.

Now, if the candidate this letter writer is on record supporting wants a snow ball chance to win the election, she would be wise to muzzle him.

Palmer is not helping your cause.

HBA surrogate
Unpublished

Palmer is obviously a surrogate of HBA. Since she has no political track record and will not take a position on any issue, she has to get her surrogates to spread innuendo and badmouth the other candidates. Watch for more of these kinds of letters.

Splost

Alvin Mason opposes the $195M Splost package the Mayor has put on the table. That's good enough to give him my vote.
