Free speech stomped

  • Follow Letters

I hope the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is proud of itself for putting it and Augusta on the national news by not letting kids sing Christmas carols to the patients. I am sick and tired of the politically correct stomping on our free speech.

Misguided notion of free speech

Your freedom of speech has not been stomped. You have expressed your opinion in this letter. Nor was the freedom of speech of the children or the VA patients stomped on. The children are free to sing their carols anyplace that permits them to sing. There also are many other locations that would not allow them to sing. This is not a violation of anyone's right to free speech. Perhaps it would be beneficial to look at the military policies regarding religious services, and the article on freedom of speech on Wikipedia is very informative.

If you don't understand why it was a problem to have them come in and sing christmas carols at a government institution then you are part of the problem.

properly guided notion of free speech

emotionally healthy adults are not so easily offended
and children singing Silent Night do not automatically become
agents of the government establishing a national religion
quite absurd
and they weren't singing in the operating room
it was a public area
and the very concept of free speech
was diminished by those with the power to control it
but not the cognitive skills that discretion requires

Misguided Notion of Limiting Free Speech

No one is saying there are not limitations to free speech and places where you can’t sing carols. But it’s an inappropriate policy for a government owned veteran’s facility to have a policy of no caroling in the lobby.

Freedom of speech has to be practiced in a reasonable manner and this appears to be reasonable. Could the VA also ban anyone using Judaea-Christian references while carrying on conversations in the lobby? No, that would be limiting free speech and interfering with the religious practice of those in the lobby when it’s not necessary, exactly as with the caroling.

From the reporting I read, the issue was not the singing, but the songs. The kids were offered an "approved" (secular) list of songs, but they declined.

I agree with Mr. Kinney. When the "problem" is not the saying, but what you say, it's a free speech and freedom of religion issue.

They were eve told they could

They were eve told they could sing religious songs in the chapel, but again refused. Those that support everyone being forced to listen to religious messages only support it when it's their religion that's being foisted on everyone.

I can see dozens of letters griping that free speech had been destroyed and that political correctness had overtaken the nation because people with shaved heads and flowing robes were prevented from chanting and beating drums in the VA lobby. When donkeys fly.

One good thing. The kids are

One good thing. The kids are getting first hand observation of how jacked - up the world is and how disfunctional things have become. They are wiser for it.

Proud

I hope they are proud of it too. They made the right the call, since the VA is about VETERANS. The fact that the choir refused the opportunity to sing in church and/or sing secular carols means they really didn't care about the veterans after all. Sad and not very Christian.

I guess it was an attack on Free Speech when the Dental College removed germ-covered magazines from their waiting rooms during the last flu scare, too?

I still remember the consternation on the faces of jewish and Adventist kids in the German class when they were forced to participate, or make a scene and not participate, in the officially sanctioned singing of German Christmas carols, as in Christian carols, by the German class throughout the school.

Oddly enough, this was the same school that used its own version of the Pledge to the Flag that specifically omitted "... under God... ". I guess that was just a swipe at the Papists, aimed at keeping the WRONG religion out of schools...
