Watch for the slippery slope

  • Follow Letters

I realize that this newspaper has the bully pulpit and their own opinion about what does and does not work in the political arena. I also realize that it is weighted to the right, and of course most all of your comments go to support that position. I am one of those compassionate conservatives that Gen. Colin Powell would identify with and, being a retired Army sergeant from the Vietnam era, have that in common with that person.

I also know about the slippery slope, and what I am referring to is that when one party wants things done their way without considering the other’s points of view, when the power is switched to the other side, the slippery slope begins again and anew. Admittedly the Obamacare process is getting a rough manhandling by the party that is not in control right now, but one wonders: What will happen if the party that is out becomes the party that is in? Do all those who are signed up for this program now go to the streets with nothing?

Why not, instead of criticism, make suggestions on how to fix the whole thing, and let government actually work just like many of us would like the process to work in a general sort of fashion?

"the slippery slope"

"when one party wants things done their way without considering the other’s points of view"
Like when the Democrats shoved this horrible bill through without one Republican vote? By unethically using a simple majority to pass one of, if not the biggest changes our country has ever seen? Passing a 2700 page takeover of 1/6 of the U.S. economy … without even reading it? And giving away pork and exemptions to bribe the last few votes?

“Do all those who are signed up for this program now go to the streets with nothing?”
What about the millions who could barely pay for the policies they had that the law outlawed? What about the millions more next year that will be without coverage? With all the hidden taxes and exorbitant premiums, those people who make too much for “subsidies” and not enough for coverage are now going “to the streets with nothing”. Do you have any empathy for them?

Obamacare is an abomination and needs to be repealed … period!

Sorry Fred, don't be deceived

Sorry Fred, don't be deceived by Gen. Powell. Obamacare is a total disaster and the slippery slope is in the rear view mirror.

When you have a tyrant in charge, the criticism is warranted. It's by design. We are being led by a Liar in Chief who has taken control of all 3 branches of our government. Lawless leaders will only promote lawlessness among the masses.

Repeal it and start from scratch

There is so much wrong with Obamacare that the only course of action is to repeal it at once, and take whatever time and patience is necessary to devise a usable solution to US health care. Any approach that does not start, in an honest way, with the reasons for the unbelievably high cost of medical service in the US, cannot do anything except to make a bad situation worse. To look that problem in the face will take some political courage, and that is probably why we ended up with the disaster now on our hands.

Well Fred since you ask ...

1) Because I don't want the government meddling in my health car.
2) Because the whole thing is a financial house of cards.
3) We are 17 trillion dollars in debt.
4) Because the government is to incompetent to run it. $ 600 million dollars and 3 years and they can't build a web site?

"By unethically using a

"By unethically using a simple majority to pass..." Was it unethical for the GOP to meet before the inauguration and agree to vote against and oppose EVERYTHING the President supported? Was it unethical for the Minority Leader of the Senate to say, "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president."? Jobs? No. Improving the economy? No. Party above country. Based partly on the right wing Heritage Foundation's health plan, and partly on the GOP's 1993 sponsored Health Equity and Access Reform Today Act, the ACA went away from the liberal preferred single payer system and more than met the GOP halfway on programs they had supported in the past. The part of "Obamacare" that they didn't like was the Obama part. Unethical? The Constitution calls for supermajorities for ratifying treaties and constitutional amendments, overriding presidential vetoes, expelling members and for impeachments. Did you ever wonder why the Vice President casts the deciding vote in a tie? Because they didn't plan on there being filbusters in the first place requring some idiotic fake number they make up to pass a bill. There would never be a tie with the filibuster in place. It's right there, plain and simple in the Constitution what the founders' intent was. Votes could end at 50-50 and one of the DUTIES of the Veep was to break a tie, not for a bill not to pass because of a 55-45 vote in its favor. That pesky old unethical Constitution.

"I am one of those compassionate conservatives"

Hhhhhhmmmm, somehow I'm seriously doubting the conservative part!! Well, come to think of it, I'm doubting the compassionate part as well. Just a thinning veiled disguise!!

"By their fruits, ye shall know them".

No conservative would ever speak up for this ACA and especially blame republicans for it's miserable introduction. So forgive me if I'm not sold on your claim of being conservative.

"Admittedly the Obamacare process is getting a rough manhandling by the party that is not in control right now, but one wonders:"

I still can't believe you are blaming republicans for the ACA rollout!! That is radical left non-sense!! I guess now republicans must have sabotaged the website?? You sir, are NOT a conservative. You are someone disguising yourself as a conservative; in an attempt to gain the support of OTHER "conservatives" who might not be informed of the truth!! So by CLAIMING to be conservative, you might sway a few of those uninformed conservatives.

Christ said "Many shall come in My name, believe them NOT."

Absolutely!! When you have a clear "redistribution of wealth" communist in the White House, I would hope and pray they would fight everything he does!!

When the President actually does something non-partisan that HELPS Americans, maybe I will rethink this. But so far, all Obama does is TALK about helping Americans and sticks us with more taxes!! He hasn't done a single thing to help the first poor or middle class person!! But he has hurt us, by raising our taxes!! Yes, this wasn't broadcast, but I've noticed my federal taxes the last few years; they keep going up.

This President, is the most

This President, is the most divisive President I can remember in my lifetime. Maybe because I don't remember Carter, I was a little to young.

This man OPENLY, goes around the Country, in campaign mode; blaming republicans for evertying gone wrong in the Country. Then he claims HE is the one who WANTS to work with them. He is the one who wants to compromise!! He forced the ACA down everyones throat, without a single republican vote and HE is the one wants to compromise?

This man was supposed to be the "Great Uniter". Yet has cause more division than most can remember!!

But isn't it funny how the LEFT always claims THEIR people are the uniters?? They are already passing Hillary Clinton off as the "Great Uniter"; saying she can fix the division in this Country. You've got to be kidding me, right? Hillary is NOT Bill Clinton. Hillary Clinton couldn't unit a male dog and a female dog in heat!!! And that doesn't take much!!

But I must give it to him, Bill Clinton was slick!!

"Private companies are building the web site, not the government."

You've GOT to be kidding us, right? So, because the government hires a private company to build the site; they have no responsibility to make sure it runs and is SAFE for the users? They shouldn't hold people accountable for incompetency? The government isn't responsible for spending the money wisely and making sure those receiving the money, are doing a professional job? Should they even get paid if they didn't get the site up and running on time?

That's the problem with unions today!! People get paid whether they actually do the job right or not!! These people should NOT get another dime until they've got the website running properly!!

You would certainly fit right in with the people running this administration. As a matter of fact, you should probably push for Chief of Staff.

The Plan

I think Mr. Pauer unwittingly hit upon IT when he asked what happens to those who sign up and the Democrats are removed from power. That's the plan, to sign up as many as possible without regards as to how it will all be paid for. Obama knows this can only lead to socialized medicine which is what he openly espouses. He knows if millions are on Obamacare it's going to be impossible to remove them.

many black kids graduate government high schools

reading at an 8th grade level
many affluent white kids attending the school of their choice
read at an 8th grade level by 5th grade
just an example of what a government system controlled by a
"vanguard elite" does
not can do, but does, every time
because the employed, the empowered, and the privileged
teachers bureaucracies want to stay employed, empowered, and privileged
more than they want to educate
the kids are just an asset to be converted into employment, empowerment, and privilege
the kids who know the secret handshake, the secret password, and curtsy and bow properly
before the selection committee may be allowed to attend Davidson
where behavior standards are at least acknowledged
but the others are simply warehoused until they are bound to the welfare and minimum wage and government housing and food stamp system
which has similar bureaucracies
and this is the same government, using the same methodology
that will soon be in control of our health care system

no-one looking for a car would accept one that has a blownup engine and bald tires, pay ten times its value and say gee wiz, what a bargin, I have a safe reliable vehicle that anyone would be proud to own.

Furthermore, to throw good money after bad trying to repair such a broken car is rediculous.

There is critisism because it's deserved!

The folks you refer to, and are responding to your LTE, are not extreme right or hard party republicans. We are AMERICANS who see a real problem in the federal government and want to fix it! We still have faith enough to try and get the word out. "Why not, instead of criticism, make suggestions on how to fix the whole thing, and let government actually work...". Come on now. You see suggestions all the time if you read the comments. The problem is the government doesn't care what we think, and reversing that mindset is the fundamntal change that we do need to survive.

No grasp of the definition of communism but y'all sure like to sling it around. Sometimes he's a communist and a socialist at the same time. Same with all of the Kenyan stuff, birth certificate, Muslim, whatever y'all can make up and try to use. Just can't wait to see y'all try to explain away a Canadian 301.81 when he runs. No clue, but it never stops the right wingers.

With all due respect to Mr. Pauer, I don't think the Chronicle tilts to "the right." As a matter of fact, the Chronicle "plays no favorites and cuts it right down the middle." I mean, it's there for all of you to read in the Friday, August 16, 2103 edition of the Chronicle in their editorial piece entitled "The law of the letter". Yea, right down the middle...no favorites...we tell it like it is.....fair & balanced - just like FOX news....yea right. And in case you have not been able to tell, that's 100 lbs. of sarcasm. The Chronicle tilts so much it needs training wheels to stay upright!

No matter how you slice it and regardless of the superficial non-sense some people assert, Obama is as unqualified now to be president as he was when he entered office.
How could any of his supporters be proud of the rhetoric he vomits out each day is a total mystery to me. They see no fault in him what so ever. I guess to his followers, he is some sort of Jesus figure, walk on water savor. Pretty sad....

Hello Bubbasauce, this one’s for you. You stated in your post, “Yes they are trying to kill this great Country and next year will be the year we start to take our United States of America back!” Well sir, with all of the negative comments that are being posted on this tread about the President of these United States of America (like it or not) I wonder just how far do YOU and YOUR fellow Obama HATERS want to take America BACK? Also who is “THEY” and who is “WE” and “OUR?” Mr. Obama is the 44th president of the United States of America and I have heard “Let’s take OUR country back” on a constant basis, but I can’t find any historical data (help me if you can) of this phase being targeted at any one of the other 43 presidents (all of which had issues that were not liked), hummmm, I WONDER WHY?
