Sheriff's office betters county

  • Follow Letters

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is being run and conducted to improve overall law enforcement in Richmond County, and to establish a bond among its citizens in all communities.

Sheriff Richard Roundtree set out from the very beginning to get the people of Richmond County involved, establishing a direct link by appointing and training a civilian force to bring about a direct connection between the people and his department. He also has trained his officers to be more people-oriented, thereby creating a direct connection in all communities of Richmond County.

Roundtree himself enjoys being more visible – he visits churches and synagogues, and he allows himself to interact with the people wherever he goes. Roundtree allows his countenance and demeanor to reflect who he is.

Crime has gone down, and if the people of Richmond County show more support and the Augusta commissioners show much more support, Richmond County will improve the lives and well-being of its citizens.

This letter is not being written to heap excessive praise on the sheriff’s office, but rather it is an attempt to raise the level of thinking of the people of Richmond County. By the way, I know the sheriff well – he once worked security at the former Regency Mall and I supervised maintenance. So I can speak with authority on this: As a security officer at the mall, he always worked and acted in a very professional manner.

Joseph Diggs Sr.

Ditto

I supported two other candidates for sheriff, but I, too, see the good job Sheriff Roundtree has done with the RCSO. Change can be beneficial with an organization and that appears to be the case here. The involvement in the community is what I most notice. The murder rate has decreased dramatically. Roundtree goes among the people and they respect him.

One other thing I’ve noticed is the consistent communications from the RCSO with a chain of command speaking with one voice instead of every Tom, Dick and Harry giving a different version to certain members of the press.

Just what we have needed...

The RCSD has embraced the concepts of community policing in a major way; beginning at the top and going all the way to the bottom. I am amazed at the change its culture that has occurred in only a year. The effects of these changes are evident everywhere and the statistics bear it out. When a community and its LEOs work together, good things begin to happen. As long as the community and its leadership continue to appreciate the contribution of our law enforcement team and its vital role in our lives, Richmond County will continue its turn around.

So far so good

1st year seems to be running as smooth as most other RCSO
administrations.

Except for the occasional Travel Checkpoints.

Agree with the above. Despite my reservations about his resume, from where I sit in ColCo looking on, he seems to be doing a good job. As I said before, I hope he is immensely successful.

Making Progress

Many of the Sheriff's deputies do seem to be more friendly and community-oriented. As deputies receive more training in how to serve the public with respect, this will continue to improve and the bad seeds "must be and will be" weeded out.

However, Operation Rolling Thunder has created a sore spot among many Augustans. Most folks are concerned about dangerous drivers, but roadblocks create too much intimidation and fear. Road patrols would be far more effective and much more community-friendly.

It will be interesting to see how the RCSO will expand community policing to better serve the people and how it will protect the rights of citizens. After all, a law enforcement officer should be the biggest champion of the rights of the people.
