Our union isn't perfect, just more so than others; right now it's endangered

  • Follow Letters

This is a response to Mr. Bobby Etheridge’s letter of Nov. 14.

As a Christian, surely you know Christians aren’t perfect. Neither is the United States. But I contend it is more perfect than any other nation, ever.

Even the founding fathers recognized their work was not perfect, and said so in the first line to the Constitution – “in Order to form a more perfect Union.”

Slavery is an abhorrent fact of early American history, but it did end – almost 150 years ago. Being history, it will never change. But if people refuse to look beyond that period in our history, racial divisions can never end, can they?

In his “Gettysburg Address,” President Lincoln spoke of our founding by saying it was “dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Even he recognized our country was an unfinished work, but is one built on a framework worthy of aspiring to. No other nation in history was built on such a frame.

And you speak of segregation as though it has ended. Has it? If it has, why are there so many “black” entities? For instance, “Miss Black America” contests, a myriad of “for black people” dating sites, “black” college funds and “Black Pages” phone books.

In more recent history, as blacks acquired the ability to move into nicer middle class homes, what happened? Today we have predominately white neighborhoods and predominately black neighborhoods. Apparently this segregation you complain about is a human condition, sought out voluntarily.

In your paragraph about evil conservatives, you complain, saying “They don’t want to do anything that will hurt the rich.” As a Christian, why would you want to hurt anyone? I do agree with your contention that “Most of the people on welfare deserve to be on welfare.” I’m glad you said “most,” because there are some who are truly in need. The rest tend to vote to remain on welfare and as a result will never rise above it. The conservative complaint about this is that these voters are dragging the current middle class down with them.

You are wrong when you said “conservatives are against President Obama’s Affordable Care Act because it helps the poor and the middle class.” Conservatives are against it because it helps only the extremely poor by further enriching the extremely wealthy. Conservatives recognize that the government takeover of our health system is the keystone to communism. If we allow it to become fully implemented, our nation will soon consist only of the poor and of the bourgeoisie. There will be no middle class.

Conservatives see that the Affordable Care Act has little to do with health care and everything to do with government control over the most basic aspect of our lives. In spite of the twisted logic used by John Roberts to justify it, it goes against everything this country was founded on.

It is appalling that our government has created a law that says you and I must buy something from “rich” insurance companies. Old people must buy a policy that includes prenatal care; single young men must buy insurance covering birth control; women must be covered for prostate exams; and Christians must go against biblical teachings and pay for abortions.

Where did the government get the right to do this? Certainly not from the United States Constitution.

Once the destruction of our Constitution is complete and the middle class in America is itself history, who will protect the poor then? They – we – will be at the mercy of people who drive around in black limousines with dark tinted windows so that we may not look upon them.

there was slavery in a Christian nation!

Christianity is a fraud! Kill Christianity!
and certainly don't look at human development
over the rest of the world's people and the
rest of the world's times
for if Mr E had bothered to learn
or the Master government schools had bothered to teach
history with all its interactive complexity
Mr E would have known that Christianity
effectively ended slavery and birthed a free world
with all its own interactive complexity
at the sacrifice of a large portion of Christianity's own "best and brightest"
to do so
the world is a learnable thing
but the Master government schools allow blissful ignorance
and a love of holding the past in contempt
and they don't teach black kids how to read
ignorance isn't bliss when one can read
but it does help keep the government our master

Great letter

But I beg to differ on one count. "Being history, it will never change". A few outspoken critics have been able to change history by stating that the Stars and Bars flag of the Confederacy stood for slavery. And then they succeeded in having it removed from our Georgia State Flag, as well as other souther states. One black was quotes as saying that he wants to be called "African American" because he doesn't want to lose track of his heritage. Well, I don't want to lose track of my heritage either! And I don't want to see our history changed by anyone. So, bring back the Stars and Bars first, since that was the first thing stolen, and then we'll negotiate other topics. Let's start with the TRUTH!

Good LTE

We have a battle on our hands. It is clear that there are those in this country that are determined to indoctrinate our youth, silence the opposition, dramatically change laws, and confiscate every last bit of wealth from the middle and upper middle class people.

When our children are brainwashed to believe the leftist ideology, they will have won half the battle.

When the words of those who oppose their rhetoric is belittled and demonized, the arena of ideas will cease to exist.

When laws are passed that allow leftist to to do as they may, tyranny will follow.

When the left claims to be taking from the rich, they are the rich and will hide their wealth, and the only ones left to take from will be the middle and upper middle class people.

All that will remain will be the rich elite and the poor.... Who do you think you will be....

Its sad that so many people

Its sad that so many people including our President view America as bad and in need of fundamental change. Our constitution puts America's future in the hands of the people and I fear many have been deceived into believing this lie. Socialism not only kills the economy but ends true hope. Once freedom is lost you won't get it back.

Very well written and thought out letter.

It's a shame that we have so many here who hate this country. They are totally ignorant to the fact that there are thousands sleeping outside our embassies world wide waiting for an opportunity to get a chance to come to America. Those people know what this land is--- the mecca to live a life of freedom where one has a chance to be whatever one has the desire and work ethic to become.

Good Grief, Obama told a

Good Grief, Obama told a bunch of his supporters last night on a conferance call that 100 million people had signed up for Obama Care! One of the ladies Obama mentioned in the Rose Garden, Jessica Sanford of Washington, was so excited to be able to purchase health insurance She e mailed Obama about it. It now turns out the computer health care exchange system in Washington miscalculated her premiums and tax rebate and she still can't afford insurance. Obama is, to put it bluntly, a BOZO of the first order! Obama can't keep facts, figures or reality in perspective! I would call him a stooge but that is insulting to stooges!! Why would any one let Obama negotiate anything with anybody? $600 million dollars, 3 years and they can't get a web site functioning? Putin will roll Obama AGAIN like a street thug handling a drunken old man!!!

Yes! Great letter! History

Yes! Great letter!

History has shown us time and time again, that with statist forms of government, the middle class is destroyed.

In a statist society you have three classes of people. The rich, or ruling class. The bureaucrats, who make up the lower middle class/upper poor class. And the poor, which is the overwhelming majority of the population. And that is the “good” part of a statist society. The bad part is mass executions and crimes against humanity.

Liberals are fools that ignore history. Little children who stick their fingers in their ears and chant “I can’t hear you” over and over again. Naively believing that giving more power to the government makes for a “more just" society, that government is a kind, and benign entity. Ignoring history, and thinking “they” can do it right this time.

Deluded fools.

Apathy and ignorance

Most of our problems are due to an apathetic, ignorant and lazy population giving Congress a lifetime job. It didn't get that way overnight but the sun is quickly rising on the end of America. The media and Hollywood has indoctrinated our youth more than the public schools have. I remember my granddaddy saying 50 years ago the "government can do whatever they want." Now I know what he meant.

It is a great letter, but

It is a great letter, but slavery is not dead...it has just exchanged the plantation for the government. The poor and the lazy live in bondage to a cruel and self serving master.
