Country was much worse

  • Follow Letters

I have been a Christian for more than 53 years. If the United States was founded on Christian principles, how did slavery exist for decades after the nation was founded? Why did it take a war and a special document to end slavery? Why did segregation exist for so long? I thought the Founders of the United States said all men were created equal.

Some conservatives want to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, which will hurt the poor and the middle class. They do not want to do anything that will hurt the rich. Those conservatives should cut their pay, which is not a small amount but a large amount. Most of the people on welfare deserve to be on welfare.

I don’t think all preachers were called by God to preach. John Hagee, Pat Robertson, Jack Van Impe and Hal Lindsey all are rich conservatives. And I think conservatives are against President Obama’s Affordable Care Act because it helps the poor and the middle class.

People talk about how bad things are today, but when the country was founded and slavery existed, it was a worse time.

Bobby Etheridge

Mr. Etheridge, we are against

Mr. Etheridge, we are against the Affordable care act because it is a disaster for the poor, the middle classes and even the Democrats who voted for it. GRADY Hospital, that primarily serves th poor, may lose up $45 millions because of Obama care. We are hearing what it is now doing to the individual insurance market, millions are losing their insurance with increased premiums and increased deductabiles, in some cases doubling these folks premiums! The same thing is going to happen because the small businessmen are going to go through the same thing as the individual people buying their own onsurance are, that's the way the law was designed. This acts is hurting Democrats because Obama lied! At a health care discussion in 2010 President Obama CLEARLY says "Up to 5% of those buying insurances, those in the individual market, are going to lose their insurance." Then for the next year Obama CLEARLY said "If you like your insurance you can keep it PERIOD " Sorry. Mr. Etheridge but your opinions and assumptions are wrong. That is why DEMOCRATS are now asking for the same thing the tea party did a few short months ago!

Bobby evidently you have not

Bobby evidently you have not listened to the horror stories of those middle class fellow citizens who have been screwed by obumler care...and it was the very notion of a christian nation and its principles that allowed slavery to end.led by christians to abolish slavery..and most on welfare deserve to be on welfare...is this a poor attempt of a joke..perhaps you missed it in the bible those who dont work dont deserve to eat..this doesnt infringe of the well established princple in scripture that mandates help for children and widows..those who refuse to work are lazy and fall under the 10th commandment...

Bobby.. perhaps you don't have the problem.. it's the others drinking the tea party cool aid. If the republicans would have helped instead of constantly trying to undermine the affordable care act, it would have gotten off to a better start. Now it's nit-picking and sabotage. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if some of their top secret pow wow groups got together to put together a plan to continue sabotaging the bill and maybe even the website. They did try over 40 times to repeal the act and then shut down the government on purpose. Just because the government is temporarily back open, doesn't mean they've given up.

Bobby Etheridge, you are cherry picking history to justify your seemingly shallow view point.

Slavery was an unjustifiable way of life and it took a bloody war to stop it. Some will argue the merits and some will site other reasons for the war but Slavery was the big reason. It has subsequently taken over a century and a half to right the ship of equality. But let's not forget that it was a Republican that led the way. ( Lincoln)

As for the rich verses the poor, I have never gotten a job from a poor person, nor has anyone else. There has always been the two classes, the rich and the poor, but what makes this country unique is the vast Middle class, which Obama and his cohorts are trying to destroy.

Take a few history lessons Bobby, or better yet, research it yourself so as not to get contaminated by a liberal history professor. If you are honest with yourself you will be surprised of just how far off base your LTE is.

No one deserves to be on welfare...

What a stupid comment. Welfare, food stamps, etc. are meant to help people get out of a rut, PERIOD. They are not a way of life, nor are they civil rights. And the Civil War was not fought over slavery either. It was fought over State's rights to rule their own and less federal government intrusion. Here we go again, blaming society for ones short commings... Bobby, I'm sorry but you need to blame your parents for teaching you all the wrong things. And then your rambling about the ACA helping the poor and middle class? If your obama gets his way, there will no longer be a middle class and no money for your welfare and food stamps. Then who will you blame?

As I travel through the

As I travel through the housing projects and see so many healthy adults sitting on their front porch with nothing to do, just marking time, I think how depressing that life must be. This is what some define as compassion. Many are trapped in this lifestyle with no way of escape thanks to a poor economy caused by the very government they support. This cycle of hopelessness can only be broken through opportunity created by a vibrant growing economy.

It is obvious that the writer did not acquire his knowledge of

history from original source documents. In an attempt to help correct his mis-knowledge I'll make a few points.

Original writings of the Founders leave no doubt that the country was founded on Christian principles and nearly everyone of them was a Christian.

As far a slavery goes, it existed centuries before the first European set foot in the Western Hemisphere. It was the West which eliminated slavery which by the way continues today in Africa and the Middle East.

When the Founders wrote in the Declaration of Independence "... all Men are created equal..." they then go on to say, "...they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness...". They were not talking about people having an equal outcome in life as far a having the same things and ways of life.

There are some aspects in which people are not created equal:
-Some are born with innate talents.
-Some are smarter than others.
-Some are born with more opportunities.
-Some have a greater desire to succeed.

Even though some have a leg up they must take advantage of it and succeed. The desire to succeed is the only inequity everyone can change because the talented can flop without ambition, the geniuses can fail without inspiration, and the rich can fail without ambition.

The liberals act like wealth and poverty are frozen in 1965. They don't understand that government handouts can be shackles to success. They take away drive and creativity.

Another mistake the liberals make is they believe the income quintiles are static in that once someone is poor they stay poor or if they are rich they stay rich. They fail to understand, or fail to admit because it will shoot down their arguments, that there is tremendous movement from one group to another...both up and down. Most people who are in the bottom 20% and working do not stay there over time. More of them move to the top 20% than stay in the bottom 20%.

As to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid go the Conservatives want to change these programs to keep the country from becoming Greece. They want to transition them to something closer to what they are intended to be. Social Security would not change for those who are currently on it or within 15-20 years of retirement. There would be transitional changes for the other two programs as well.

Some things which need to be done are the elimination of dozens of duplicate programs designed to help the "poor" and make it that anyone who is able bodied and does not work doesn't get any assistance from the government.

Charity and assistance programs should start at the family level and work out from their to the churches and cities and states and very, very little come from the federal government. If a person has to go face to face with the person, not some faceless agency, giving the charity then perhaps they would be shamed into working if they are able.

Slavery exists today, Mr. Etheridge, you're just too blind to recognize it, or otherwise incapable of understanding it.

"But many are not smart enough to get it."

I certainly agree with that comment. But, in their defense, they've been lied to, repeatedly, by a mainstream Press and an entire political party who seeks to keep them down, undereducated, convinced they are both "entitled" and being screwed by "whitey," or "the rich," or some other group of citizens who hates them and wants to ruin their lives. The public school system and most colleges and universities only aggravate the problem.

The American left has done more to diminish the lives of millions of American citizens than slavery ever thought about causing. This brand of slavery knows no racial bounds, but it has definitely targeted blacks as the main group of "victims." Pity that many of the so called black "leaders" have contributed to the problem as a means of enriching themselves and gaining fame.

harley_52, that statement is spot on, truer words have never been said!!
John Kennedy would be ashamed of the democrat party and MLK would hang his head in shamed with what black leaders have done to the black communities.

Days of Slavery

American society is the definition of a slave mentality. It is a nation of sheep, citizens who do what they are told, when they are told, and how they are told.

A slave mentality has nothing to do with government programs which help poor people. It has to do with the corporate masters who own the workers, dictating their lives to them.

A slave worker is owned by a company. The company tells you when to get up in the morning, where you will sit during the day, how many minutes you may have to eat a meal, and how much they will allow for your sickness or your vacation.

The corporation tells you what you will wear, to whom you may or not speak, and when to shut up.

The corporation owns you, their slave. You will do their bidding, whatever they ask, to get a paycheck. You will hope they will like you and will not fire you. The corporation will punish you if you do not abide by their rules. They will write you up and demote you and fire you at will.

The slave worker will work while he is sick, because he might get in trouble if he doesn't. The slave worker will tolerate racism, sexism, nepotism, and other horrific behaviors because of fear of the corporate master.

The worker is a slave to the corporation.

And this arrangement is fine for most people. They prefer to be a slave. They cannot think for themselves and must be told what to do and when to do it. They learned this lesson well in the American school system. They have been taught that "getting a good job" is utopia and they believe it. They like the rules and the order of the company. And they are sheep, waiting to do the master's bidding.

But there are some, a rare breed of individual, who refuse to be slaves. They innovate and create and become a proprietor of their own business. They work out of sheer love for their craft. They are passionate and successful. They are non-conformists who welcome new challenges and think of ways to market their product or service. They are not shackled to a board of directors and profits.

So who is the real slave?

specta, The only choice one has to avoid what you say is

to be one of the people who is willing to risk everything they have and start their own business. America is, well it used to be before Obama, the best place in the world to start a business. It's still good but because of liberals such as yourself the free market has been hamstrung by regulations that would prevent a company like Home Depot from starting up today.
There never has been a country that has increased the standard of living more so than has the USA. Too bad people such as yourself do not seem to appreciate that as much as those who risk their life to get here do.

"Some conservatives want to cut Social Security,

.
And yet these "conservatives" have no power to cut anything. On the other hand, Ozbama seriously slashed Medicare to fund his obviously failed "ObamaCare" disaster and at the same time damaged the liberal's EBT program, (Which I would love to see hit even harder.)

Only thing the write failed to do was blame George Bush, but I'm sure that was just an oversight.

If only we could go back to when women couldn't have any help during childbirth so they could once again feel the pain that Gawd wanted them to.

Well, at least the poor women should have to suffer as the rich women obviously are special in Gawd's sight because... well, because they are rich.

"A slave mentality has nothing to do with government

programs which help poor people. It has to do with the corporate masters who own the workers, dictating their lives to them."

.
To begin with, those government programs DON'T help poor people. They only serve to keep them poor. Then they keep their children, their grandchildren, their great-grandchildren and their great-great grandchildren poor, ad infinitum.

Thus creating the "slave mentality". As always, Specsta is wrong. Nothing new in his latest post. Same old panacea, "socialism is wonderful and will soon save us all from ourselves and the oppressive corporations" pablum.

Same old failed and disgraced, Marxist "Dictatorship of the Proletariat" propaganda.
