Legal system too twisted

  • Follow Letters

Let’s see now: Scott Dean, wrongfully accused and convicted on two counts of child molestation, stays incarcerated while his life is forever damaged and altered. The accuser, Silda Dean – who admits to lying and perjury – remains free with apparent impunity. The judge says the wrongfully convicted should stay in jail. Yet no one pursues the accuser who perjured herself and wrecked the lives of others.

Tell me: Why does she have to be convicted of perjury? She freely admits to it. Have her sign a statement. I think there is no need for a trial to convict someone of something they admit to.

Is it not obvious that our legal system has lost all decency and common sense? How sad it is that it is run by such thorough legal logic that somehow leads to twisted outcomes. Only in America do the criminals have more rights than the victims.

The Dean case

It really has been confusing...if a case ever needed a redo, this one does.

I Agree!

The daughter needs to be held accountable for perjury, and the father should be offered a new trial. Why is this such a complex matter? It just makes sense.

The DA won't charge the girl

The DA won't charge the girl with perjury so the case can't be retried. Seems there are organizations that would see this as an injustice (especially if Dean were black) and perhaps they could help.

Folks having been telling

Folks having been telling y'all that this system needs some fixing but they often get labeled as "bleeding heart liberals."

This system may be considered the best in the world but if it fails you and your loved one in such a clear cut way....not so much.

Can we all advocate for change and not just when we feel personally or regionally effected?

The justice system is the one

The justice system is the one government entity that people refuse to admit has a problem. we need to lock up offenders, this is true, but when Judges and lawyers can't be held accountable for their wrongful actions, and we as citizens are, something must change.

When a doctor screws up he can be sued, but not a judge or a lawyer. After all, they wrote the laws, so they have written them to protect themselves.

System Failure

Too many youth programs are finding it very difficult to recruit and keep good youth leadership for this very reason. All it takes is one disgruntled kid to point a finger and a good person is ruined for life. I have personally seen the changes over the last 20 years. It's just not worth the risk any more... Our legal system grew out of the old English Common Law which basically reflected the moral sense of the general community. Unfortunately the law has evolved into a system which no longer has the flexibility to deal with common sense and true justice...

A thumbs up.
On another issue, I also find it troubling that we have privatized prisons/detention centers, etc. Somebody gets paid to keep the prisons full! How sick is that? I remember a few years ago there was a judge in one state who received kickbacks from the private owners each time he sentenced a youth to a detention center. There are some functions that should never be handed over to the private sector.

Truth Matters, Take a look at

Truth Matters,
Take a look at some of the contracts between state governments and private prisons. The contracts have occupany rate clauses. At the signing of these contracts, the GOVERNMENT is actually PROMISING the private prison company that they (the government-law enforcement-DA's-judges) will keep the prison 90-100% full. If no one cares about this, why should anyone care about Scott Dean?

Catch 22

The District Attorney knows she engineered an unfair prosecution. A second trial would expose that for all the world to see. She has to run for re-election soon, and the memory would hurt her chances. Ergo, there will be no perjury case against Silda Dean.

Sad situation for Scott Dean. His attorney really led him down the primrose path to perdition.

Will you remember this when you vote for her?

I presume the DA knows of far more than one unfair prosecution her office has engineered. Unfortunately, when it comes time for her political career to continue, ideology tends to trump both negligence and corruption.

It's Collusion

The judge and DA must be colluding, this Catch 22 is scary that they can choose to leave someone innocent to rot in jail! Vote them out, vote them all out!!

This is totally unbelieveable!

No prosecution for the Dean's daughter, but that woman in Appling goes straight to jail because she lied and put her boyfriend in jail for two weeks. I hope that someone finds out who is behind this conspiracy and puts them in jail.
