Be ashamed of this debacle

  • Follow Letters

It is revealing to note, when reading the opinion pages, the comments made by writers of various political stripes regarding the U.S. debt, and the foregone conclusion that the limit will be raised each time it is about to be exceeded. Conservatives, generally Republicans, threatened a functional shutdown of government unless concessions on spending reductions are made. Liberals, generally Democrats, refused to negotiate.

Polls show that the voting public hates government shutdowns more than big debts, and tend to favor the spenders over the would-be cutters, and the major media follow suit. Neither party wants such a massive financial burden hanging over its head, but both know that the public has been inured to the entitlements that are driving these spending levels. The Republicans at least feigned an attempt to reduce spending, thereby positioning themselves as targets of blame, whereas the Democrats wouldn’t even discuss entitlement reduction and then rubbed it in as Republicans showed popularity dips in the polls.

In an Oct. 17 letter to the editor, Victor Reilly (“Put the limit in perspective”) labels attempts at cutting spending “a particularly nasty recent practice.” What? He cites “Bush’s trillion-dollar wars” as the sole cause of the deficit and debt, and gives President Obama credit for “a start on universal health care” without mentioning the fact that Obama’s policies (not even including Obamacare) have increased the debt by $8 trillion during his time in office – more than all other presidents before him added together.

Wars are costly, but spending is spending regardless of where it’s going. Military spending and entitlements are going to take hits if we are to bring the deficit under control. With the current crop of tenured, incompetent politicians whose prime concern is keeping their jobs – and the entitlement-mentality electorate waiting out there to cast their next votes for more freebie sponsors – it is not immediately apparent that we will suddenly become fiscally-responsible and balance our budget.

Americans should be collectively ashamed for the fiscal debacle we are leaving to our generations that follow. Most of you people know who you are; I only hope you know what you’re doing – and care!

We really need to reduce what the federal government does.

It is doing so much beyond its powers laid out in The Constitution. Weaning people off of entitlements is going to be a slow and gradual process but it can be done.

We need to started eliminating complete cabinet agencies and departments. Commerce, Energy, Education, and EPA are examples that could be eliminated and turned into small offices or branches. Just look at the massive size and number of the buildings these occupy. Some other cabinet agencies could be eliminated and cut back to branches or offices.

As far as military spending goes it is the smallest percentage of the budget it has been. In the 50's it was 50% or more of the budget. It is taking more of a hit than any other portion of the budget and it is the primary and most critical responsibility of the government laid out in The Constitution. Today, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid make up the largest pieces of the budget and continue to expand. Medicaid will/is sky rocketing under Obama as is Social Security disability.

Just to show how out of control the government has become, the counties surrounding DC are now the richest in the country and continue to grow. The federal workforce is becoming an entitlement class that when cuts are mentioned outside of the military people scream about the number of people who will be put out of work if such and such is cut.

We need a Calvin Coolidge and a Conservative Congress to get us out of this mess. Progressiveness, "compassion". and vote buying is what got us in this mess.

The bull frog has had the temperature gradually increased on him for decades and now he is about cooked.

Honestly, there is no hope

Honestly, there is no hope for American politics until we have radical change. We absolutely must have term limits and I'm still not sure that would fix anything. Why? Because I just don't believe people have the honor and integrity they use too!! We have a crop of leaders today that are 2nd and 3rd generation millionaires, born with silver spoons in their mouths. They didn't have to do the actual work to succeed, their father and grandfathers did that FOR THEM!! Now they believe themselves to be BORN leaders, because daddy was!! The only problem is, they don't have the qualities their daddy's had!! They are spoil little brats!!!

They lie straight to our face and cover for each other!! Take for example, Mitch McConnell and his sweatheart deal placed in the debt ceiling debate!! His State got 2.9 Billion dollars for a job that was suppose to cost 755 million!! Thrown in the middle of the debt ceiling/government shutdown deal, so we wouldn't notice!! ALL politicians today do pork spending this way!! ANYONE who does this, needs to be thrown out, immediately!! Why put it in the middle of a completely seperate issue? Why not have a vote on THIS particular spending, AFTER the debt ceiling vote?

Then Dianne Feinstein covers for Mitch McConnell!! You telling me these people, even republicans and democrats; don't look out for other members of the senate or congress, more than they look out for me and you??? After all the fighting and talk, they will still give each other BILLIONS of dollars and lie to cover for each other!!

This Country is absolutely DOOMED with the leadership it has today!! I absolutely, positively include ALL parties in that!! This is the "Shining City on the Hill" and the "Last hope for freedom in the world". If freedom fails here, we KNOW there is no new land to flee too. We certainly can't depend on these MEN to lead us with honor and integrity; therefore we need a Savior, more than ever before!!

You are expecting the impossible from a large part of the electorate. These people are woefully unaware of their own shaddow let alone of how harmful it is to this country to continue voting in the freebee politicians. Asking them to educate themselves on civics is like herding cats. Besides they don't have a clue when it comes to politics. They are busy sitting next to their mail box waiting for their next government check.

You are right

Myfather15. Look at the IRS. The audited and harrassed the Tea Party. Fox News had a story about how they ovepayeded earned income tax credit to the goon of $11 to $13 billion/year. Today's Augusta chronicle had an article about how 700 IRS employees owe $ 5.4 million dollars in back taxes and are still working in violation of the law. The IRS can't account for $60 million dollars in Obama care start up funds. NOW These idiots are going to run health care?

We simply have to many

We simply have to many entrenched lefties in the press and the agencies of the Federal government. Remember that it was a hold over Democrat that created the Valerie Phlame "scandal " for Bush. The special prosecuter knew it early on but kept after the Bush administration for months any way!

Speaking of corruption and Diane Feinstein.

Maybe the ACE could look into this.

The post office is selling off a lot of its facilities and land which it no longer uses. Guess what real estate company got the deal? If you said Diane Feinstein's husband who uses a different last name you win. Commission on this deal is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $900 million dollars or more. I wonder how that was put out for bid or was there some hanky-panky. My money is on the latter.

Entitlements?

The only entitlements that I know of are Social Security, Medicare, and MILITARY pensions (not government or post office pensions). They have been PAID FOR or EARNED by the folks who are ENTITLED to receive them. Changing the definition of entitlements to include food stamp or welfare recipients is a liberalistic ploy, and just plain morally wrong. This is a good letter, except for that clouded issue.

The Tea Party is run and

The Tea Party is run and funded by Republican billionaires. They have their best interests at heart. Military spending has been almost 50% of our revenue for years. Income taxes, mostly for the wealthy, have been cut to the point that payroll taxes bring in almost the same amount of revenue. Corporate taxes bring in about 1/4 of the percent of GDP they used in spite of making record profits. The debt is thanks to cuts in revenue and giveaways to the rich and corporations. If we'd been bringing in 20%-22% of GDP in revenue, we'd have been running even or surpluses. Don't cut taxes when you start 2 wars is a basic principle if you don't want to start cranking up the debt. Don't allow 1% of the population to be the only people to gain financially among the population and then give them massive tax breaks that kill your revenue stream. Don't allow people and businesses to offshore trillions tax free. Don't allow business to ship jobs overseas without tax penalties. Don't let those at the top buy your country.

Gary, You make a very good point. If someone has not

contributed into something you are not "entitiled" to get something out. In essence you are getting a hand out.

My wife and I were discussing the situation in Greece this morning and I was telling her the people riot over there because there are some trying to get the runaway entitlements under control to save the economy and they don't want to lose their handouts. I told her the same thing could happen here because last week when the snafu with the food stamp program happened there were many acting surprised because we did not have rioting in the street. If there are drastic changes here the moocher/parasite class agitated by the community ''organizers/agitators" would see to it their folks would take to the streets.

a disgraced nation -

So much for the promises of this President to bring unity, transparency, and prosperity. He has failed in ALL areas. Under his "leadership", if that is what you can call it, the country is the most divided it has ever been on all fronts; scandal after scandal after scandal has surfaced, he meets behind closed doors with democrats and has no answers for the American people; and he is bankrupting this nation, leading us down the path of destruction. The real disgrace: having elected Obama. ** Ben Carson for President 2016!!! **

Donations to the Senate Conservatives Fund soared in September as the political action committee helped push a conservative rebellion in Congress to dismantle President Obama’s health care law. The committee raised more than $2.1 million last month and more than 90% of the donations came in amounts of $200 or less.

Yeah Bod, them billionaires are really showing their support with each $200 or less donation.

if we repeal the whole tax

if we repeal the whole tax code...replace it with a fair flat tax...and not allow it to be amended or changed by less than 67 percent of congress we will get rid of a lot of kickbacks...after all the current tax laws is nothing but a bunch of laws favoring one party, industry etc over another for contributions...3 rates for incomes so EVERYONE has skin in the game...pass welfare reform to make it workfare...its not rocket scientist stuff ...you simply got to clip congress wings considering spending and make grownups of the american populace...no more cradle to grave free rides...

Look folks, we just proved

Look folks, we just proved that the best way to discredit Obamacare was to let it go into effect. The same goes for the Democrat philosophy on taxes and spending. You can't convince them until it happens. We all know that it WILL happen and that we who would like a fiscally responsible government are outnumbered. Prepare yourself the best you can to reduce your tax burden, to survive the collapse, and then vote Democrat and sit back and watch the riots when the collapse happens.

The best way to discredit the nanny government proponents is to let it happen. Just like Obamacare, the Republicans were right. They asked for a delay but Obama and the Democrats would not negotiate. TODAY, there are a line of Democrats saying that Obamacare implementation is such a train wreck that it needs to be delayed. The Republicans were right about Obamacare and they are right about the DEBT issue too. But you cannot tell knuckleheads anything. They have to learn the hard way. Get yourself prepared and armed and sit back and watch. After all you are the minority now if you are a working taxpayer. Let the moocher majority have it, sit on your front porch locked and loaded, and we will just have to see how long the boat floats.

What a disaster. But is anyone really surprised? The left is full of blue sky and sunshine ideas, but cant get anything done except demagogue people who disagree with them. The ACA has some nice features, but on the whole its horrible for the country. But, to quote someone who people hope is our next President, "what difference, at this point, does it make?"

In my opinion letting obamacare going into effect and letting

it destroy itself is the tremendous damage it would do to people as it implodes. Just look at the 350+k people in FL who lost their health insurance as a result of obamacare and the number of part time jobs we have as a result of this junk. Just think it ain't even got fully started yet. Let's kill this rattlesnake before it bites any more people.

First inclination is to blame billionaires. Seems to ignore the fact that George Soros, Warren Buffet, and a bunch of Goldman Sac executives etc support Obama not to mention the weirdo's in Hollyweird! I have to laugh at some of this. The poor, Blacks and middle class have lost economically in every year of Obama's presidency. 90 million workers are with out jobs, economic growth is weak and sitting on the verge of economic collapse. Unemployment is higher than it was when Bush left office and we have 7 trillion dollars more in debt and the health care system is now screwed up. Yes it is the evil Republicans that are responsible, despite having been out of power for the last five years!

I have heard, from many Republicans, that all of this give-away is just to get more votes from the poor and middle class. I will agree that the result of The Democrats "free-bees" is indeed getting more votes, BUT I don't agree that this is necessarily the only reason. I still like to THINK that my party truly cares for these people!

Let's not get too mixed up here

First of all, the shutdown orchestrated by the tea partiers was not directed at "entitlements." The only funding affected by this tactic was so-called discretionary spending. There were 7 demands made by the House:
1. Defund the ACA
2. Implement the Ryan bill that further reduces taxes on corporations
3. Open all U.S. shorelines for drilling
4. End regulations on banks
5. Kill the Consumer Protection Bureau
6. Stop the EPA from capping carbon emissions
7. Approve the Keystone Pipeline Project immediately

Then, next year, the administration would be threatened with another shutdown with another list of demands. And the year after that. Does anyone really think any administration, Democratic or Republican, would cave to a list of demands like that, just to get the House to do its constitutionally required duty of preparing a budget?

Second, only Republicans refer to food stamps as "entitlements." Democrats do not. Most of the people on food stamps are previously-employed people who are out of work, people working in jobs that do not pay a living wage, the elderly, and disabled people who are unable to work. Nobody is living large on $200 per month worth of food.

Bod it's the top 10% of

Bod it's the top 10% of Americans have 80% of the wealth and wealth inequality. While it is true the "wealthy" have benefited with tax cuts or other low interest rates that has nothing to do with income. You can be wealthy and not work-like some retired people have accumulated some wealth for retirement. Wealth inequality isn't the same as income inequality. Income inequality has more to do with two income families and education. Sadly the wealth aren't ever held accountable and they have also gained wealth under Obama's policies. But who are punished is by income which isn't the same-plenty of people make handsome incomes and have little wealth and huge debt. We keep raising taxes on income and punishing people by income and yet the wealthy are still immune. People create the villain and then blame it on they guy who looks similar but isn't the real criminal. Income redistribution doesn't address wealth inequality, because their wealth is still protected and often they have little direct income. Wealth inequality will remain as the redistributed income doesn't increase the wealth of the receiver, people with higher incomes will have less chance to accumulate wealth, and the real wealthy stay wealthy. Rockefeller is a generational wealth as others. My wife and I have a handsome income but no wealth-we owe rather than own. My best friend has had little income his whole life but because has a lot of wealth in owing nothing-everything is paid for, owns a good bit of land too. Despite my income being 6 times his he actually has more wealth. I have debt.

I know, I know progressives are socialist and hate any income or wealth but only tolerate some magical number "they" believe is appropriate. Really odd as hell all my life I thought making a good income and accumulating some wealth was the goal. I know there are always criminals who want to steal it but I never thought they'd make it legal to steal.
