We're shut down? Good!

  • Follow Letters

If it were a snow day, nobody would care or even give a second thought about the federal government being shut down. Nonessential employees would remain at home until notified to return to work. Life would continue to go forward in Washington, D.C., as well as life in the rest of America.

I find it interesting that a partial shutdown of the federal government has caused such a “crisis” in our country. We, the American public, are deluged with sad stories about museums and national parks being closed. Those mean-spirited Republicans! And as a result, we are to shed crocodile tears for our collective loss.

The phrase “we the people” used to mean something. It used to mean that we the citizens had popular sovereignty. Power was ours to give to Congress through our duly elected officials. Not any more. This crisis has revealed the arrogance, self-importance and self-worth of those who have been elected to represent the citizens of this nation. They wrongly think that we must be dependent upon their very existence! How vain!

Government and those who serve must be held accountable from time to time. If the government is shut down, then good. If it’s closed, government can’t tax, spend and diminish our rights. America must wake from its slumber and remind our elected officials what “we the people” means. I say let them find out in 2014.

John C. Huffman

Obama appears to have directed his people to take actions

which will cause the most pains. Some examples:

Closing the road to Mt Vernon although it has been under the control of a private foundation receiving no federal money since 1858.

Closing a privately owned colonial village which receives no federal funds and is not part of the park service at a cost of $25,000 in lost business this week. If this goes on for two more weeks of closure by the feds the facility will close forever.

Closure of many monuments in DC that are in the open and require nobody to be there. Similar to looking at the signers monument in Augusta...out in the open with no park rangers. As a matter of fact the government sent six people out to the WWII memorial to erect barricades with yellow tape and razor wire to keep the vets from going to an open air memorial.

The cemetery at Normandy and the observation platform at Omaha beach were closed to the public.

There are many more examples but you get the point. The government is closing things that don't even belong to them. Yet, Obama is going to take his entourage and fly to Asia to visit Indonesia and one other Pacific country of no critical importance to our national interest. Michelle would say as did Marie Antionette, "Let them eat cake" as she is asked about the people who are out of pay checks because her husband refuses to negotiate.

The Obamacare is not the law that was passed by Congress and signed by Obama. It has been bastardized so much by his waivers and modifications that it is no longer recognizable. He has violated his oath of office numerous times refusing to enforce and to uphold the laws passed by congress and modify them as to his whims. This man is acting more as a quisi-dictator rather than the executive of a country that is supposedly run by the rule of law rather than the rule of man as laid out in our Constitution.

This is a Republican
Unpublished

This is a Republican shutdown, caused by people who are unable to accept that Americans are not fooled by the subterfuge, and blatant lies about the ACA. Republicans have been trying for a long time, and frankly it's only the ignorant who believe it. It is a tantrum, thrown by the spoiled rich child who isn't popular any more, and doesn't get his way.

The letter writer fail to

The letter writer fail to realize that on a snow day, they still get paid and the workers can meet their mortgage payment and feed their families. The letter writer probably has never experienced living from paycheck to paycheck. Don't speak of what you don't know of. There has been a great demand for the ACA as seen by the many glitches at the web site. It is truly a shame that the Tom Cruzes of the world have so much hate for their president that they would rather see the country go down rather can give him credit for the greatest program since Social Security. Almost make you shame of America. He will prevail in the end as he always does which is something they don't understand. God will give you peace in the midst of your storms. People prefer the ACA 5-1 over Obama care, what does that tell you? God bless America and God bless Our President.

Mr. Huffman seems to have

Mr. Huffman seems to have forgotten we had an election in 2012 and the people of the nation had the opportunity to choose our duly elected officials. The Democrats won the Presidency, the Senate, and received around a million more votes in the House but, thanks to the worst gerrymandering in decades, the GOP managed to maintain control. The people decided. The losers are now letting the most extreme right wing faction of their party try to force their will on the nation and let them shut down the government like whining toddlers having a fit because they can't get their way. Let them convince the nation and gain the majority of the votes. When they can win the presidency, the Senate, and the House, and have over 50% of the votes nationwide, they'll have a legitimate case for making changes. Until then, act like adults. You can't take your ball and go home like some kid. These are people's lives you're dealing with, and when we get to the debt ceiling negotiations, the entire US economy. When you lose, you don't get your way. Tell Cruz to take his oversized ego and sit on it. He's not the leader of the party. Tell him he'll be stripped of all committee assignments if he doesn't shut up. It's time for the adults to talk.

I AGREE some good may come of this shut-down. BUT as I listening to the "liberal" news, I UNDERSTAND that gov. employees are rightfully fearfull of their pay-checks!! I am seeing; every day; that I agree with the shut-down, BUT the wrong people are the ones getting hurt!!

THIS IS JUST ONE GREAT PARAGRAPH!! I wish it were ALLTRUE!! Unfortunately, government is a necessary evil, AND it must be paid for!! In my writings, I use the phase "WE THE PEOPLE" quite a bit!! I see it as putting even more enphasis on the subject when that subject is about government. As for the shut-down, citizens can only hope that the amount learned will be directly proportional to the hurt that is being caused!! As for voting, I will ALWAYS look at the Democratic candidates first, BUT I will not vote for them JUST BECAUSE they are Democrats, and I believe, FOR THE FUTURE of this country, conservatives should be willing to say the same!!

More Sour Grapes

As usual all the critics parrot what Rush has suggested to them. He should kiss Obama's feet every day on the EIB. Without Clinton or Obama he is like the tree falling in an empty forrest. Let's face it O-Haters. You never have a better idea. Your complete logic is based on criticism of any idea. That must be because you have no ideas of your own.. if so, where are they? Let's keep in mind that ACA has nothing to do with the current issue of budgeting or the even more important issue of The Debt Ceiling. ACA is the law of the land, usually the conservative approach is to be law abiding. So, if you want to change it, win the election.. fat chance of that. You fail to see that others have opinions that they are just as passionate about as you are about your own. Sometimes a less than perfect attempt is better than no attempt at all, and that is what the Elephants have set forth, Nothing. There seems to be alot of thought going into this debate.. maybe more effort here in the Augusta Chronicle than in Congress. Republicans are doing more to create more democrats than anything the Democrats can poissibly do.. I see a Landslide victory for Hillary Clinton coming, and if you guys think you hate Obama, just wait until you get a taste of "Billary"... I know Rush is licking his lips.

Dixieman's 10-point plan to resolve the Pause

1. Use of the word "shutdown" is now officially banned in all publications and correspondence. "Pause" is to be used instead.
2. For every national park or monument that is closed by the Pause, one Democrat Senator or Congressman must streak unclothed from the Capitol to the White House and back at 12:00 noon.
3. Every vote taken in Congress must be conducted in total darkness to obscure the faces of the guilty.
4. Every non-essential Federal employee to be permanently dismissed at the end of the Pause. If they're not essential, we should not be paying them.
5. Barack Obama to be declared a non-essential Federal employee. Then see point 4.
6. No free potato chips for Congress until the Vietnam Veterans Wall is reopened.
7. All schoolchildren and WWII Honor Flight veterans whose trips to DC during the Pause get a free wooden paddle, engraved with the name of their school/unit, and a free whack at the Congressperson of their choice. (Congresspeople to line up facing paddle holders, do a smart about face, bend over, and...well, you can take it from there).
9. Point 8 has been Paused.
10. In 2014 and 2016, throw the rascals out. There is no other remedy.

"Obama appears to have

"Obama appears to have directed his people to take action.."

For this president to be the worst president ever, he sure is smart at making Republicans do things they don't want to do like shutting down the government. The Republican Party is pro business and pro family, yet how did this man (Obama) manage to get them to turn against families and workers by having more than 800k federal workers laid off, not to mention others affected by the ripple effect of the shutdown? I can not wait to hear how Obama manages to keep Boehner from bringing a vote in the House to end the shutdown that the GOP does not want.

Someone is smarter than we think if he can do all that.

Humble Angela, who has lost their policies due directly to the ACA? Or is it that greedy corporations are cutting people's hours, et cetera? If that is the case, the blame lies directly on the employers, NOT the ACA. Of course, Republicans are unwilling and unable to see or tell the truth.

Corporations are in business to make profit. If you regulate that profit away, they have to make cuts. They are NOT in business to take care of the employees. If you want that, move to a socialist nation and leave this one alone.
