Have you no decency, GOP?

  • Follow Letters

In previous letters to the editor, I generally have tried to present the progressive view on a given subject without being overly partisan. Of course, the positions of the Democrats usually are closer to mine than the Republicans, but that has mostly been incidental.

In fact, I strongly believe that we are better off as a country with a strong, articulate and rational conservative viewpoint as a contrast to the progressive position. Debate improves proposals of both sides.

But in the current crisis, there is only one side – that of the American people. The Affordable Care Act was passed by both houses of Congress and signed into law by President Obama. The Supreme Court ruled it constitutional. The American people ratified it by re-electing Obama rather than Mitt Romney, who made the ACA his major position.

Now, a small group of members in the House of Representatives show that they believe in democracy only when they get their way. They have tried to blackmail the Senate and the executive branch and judicial branches of government by inflicting pain on ordinary people and the entire economy by shutting down the government.

I believe Republican leaders have said they have to kill the ACA now because they think it will work to help people afford health care. I repeat: They want to kill it because they think it will help people!

After numerous cuts to programs that provide the safety net for our most vulnerable, this latest attempt brings me to ask the question that Joseph Welch asked U.S. Sen. Joe McCarthy almost 60 years ago, “Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”

The events of the next few days will supply the answer.

Andy C. Reese

Let me get this straight.

The Republicans are asking for a one year delay in individual mandate portion of Obamacare in order to allow the administration to work out some problems as the president did for the employer mandate (which he has not authority to do since it was a law passed by Congress and he signed). They are asking for a repeal of the medical device tax which would cost 250,000 jobs and put many medical device companies out of business or move overseas. Additionally, they are asking for the Congress and its staffs to be put under the law as required by Senator Grassley's amendment passed as part of the law.

Because the House is asking the above and Harry Reid, the senator from NV who came to the Senate with no money and is now a multi-millionaire, refuses to even negotiate the letter writer is accusing the Republicans of trying to harm the people?

Some children are being denied cancer treatment and the Republicans want to provide funding for the cancer center so they can receive treatment and Reid says, "Why would I do that?" and then goes on to insult the reporter for asking the question and the Republicans are to be blamed?

The president has put six park rangers at the WWII veterans site where there are normally two and erected barricades and threaten to arrest WWII veterans if they try to come to the memorial and the letter writer is blaming the Republicans?

The president has closed parking lots along the Potomac normally opened to the public 24 hours a day and not manned by anyone and the letter writer is blaming the president?

The president has exceeded his authority by giving waivers and making changes to the law over 250 times and without congressional approval and the letter writer is blaming the Republicans?

The Constitution states all funding bills will originate in the House of Representatives and the Republicans are executing their Constitutional duty and the letter writer is blaming the Republicans?

I guess the president taking his trip to Indonesia and one other Asian country during this time of what should be critical negotiations will be blamed on the Republicans also by the letter writer.

The Republicans are offering individual bills to keep all the functions of government running but the democrats refuse to pass or consider any of them. Only someone completely detached from reality would want to blame the Republicans for this "shutdown".

Very funny, deestafford,

Unpublished

Very funny, deestafford, especially when the only people who think it should be delayed are Republicans, and Republicans have had the definite agenda of attempting to thwart anything that Obama and the Democrats try to do. Republicans are Responsible for the lowering of our credit rating, and are threatening to do it again. They would, and are TRYING to, destroy our country, rather than see Obama and the Democrats "win". You folks keep at it, we will see Democrats in both Houses and the Presidency for quite a while. THANKS!

The Republican House has been sending appropriation bills

to the Senate for months and Harry Reid has refused to take any of them up for consideration as required by The Constitution. As a matter of fact, the Senate has not passed a budget in five years and that is why we have these continuing resolutions.

What about Obama's budgets? They have been shot down in the democractically controlled Senate each time they have been submitted.

"I believe Republican leaders have said they have to kill the ACA now because they think it will work to help people afford health care. I repeat: They want to kill it because they think it will help people!"

Mr. Reese, people like you are no better than that lying Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi!! In reality, maybe far worse because at least people can clearly see WHY they lie and push their side; it's made them millionaires. Why you? Why would you blatantly lie, saying republicans WANT to hurt people? What does it benefit you?

My guess is that you're just one of their mindless soldiers!! Doing nothing but repeating the words of the democratic leaders!! You've bought their non-sense, hook, line and sinker!! Now you're actually helping them spread the lies, just like a good soldier!! You might want to rethink your thought process Mr. Reese!!

You said "Republicans are Responsible for the lowering of our credit rating, and are threatening to do it again. They would, and are TRYING to, destroy our country, rather than see Obama and the Democrats "win"."

So now conservatives, especially those fiscal responsibility advocates the "Tea Party" are responsibile for destroying the Country?

We are trying to destroy our Country? Obama has run up more national debt than any other Presidents combines and you say WE are trying to destroy the Country?

I guess you're one of those who thinks the debt is nothing; we don't have to worry about the debt, it's just a number. We will never have to pay that off; no one will ever try to collect on that debt, right?

Meanwhile, while you sleep on sweet Charlotte, China is becoming one of the largest landowners in the United States and within 5 years, could be the largest owner of land in the US. Nope, nothing to worry about there, right? A communist Country that actually DOES hate our guts; owning a large chunk of our land. What happens when they demand to build on that land, whatever they want to build? Maybe another Country within a Country? They own it, what's to stop them? War?

You want to talk about destroying our Country? What about not becoming oil independent, during a time where the middle east is in turmoil? What about banning OUR companies from drilling but allowing Petrobraz (Brazilian Oil company) to drill off OUR shores.

What about the fact it took this Country 233 years to get to 9 trillion in debt; but it took just over 4 years to build another 8 trillion!! Are you kidding me?

This Country has went on a ridiculous, absurd, massive spending spree the last 4+ years. Republican's want to control that and stop spending so much and they are trying to destroy the Country? This is INSANE!!! With thinking like this, we are absolutely DOOMED people!! Do you guys understand this; we are DOOMED with people thinking like Reid and Pelosi!!

I repeated, it took 233 years to get to 9 trillion in debt, but only took 4 to add another 8 trillion!! If that doesn't boggle your mind, nothing will!! WAKE UP!!

the govermedia marches on

with it's foot soldiers of useful, racist O'diots
first, change the words
health care requires a doctor, not a "health care provider"
farmers aren't called food providers
doctors are our smartest, our most giving, our true altruists
yet many O'diots have been given the task of maligning them
of telling the most robust of lies, that doctors are greedy because they drive their (oh my goodness) mercedes cars (good for them)
and thus reducing them to levels below bureaucrats
a government collectivization of our medical industry
should cause equally large events like a government shutdown
hopefully till the second tuesday after the first monday in november
of 2016
oh, march on useful, racist, O'diot buearucrats!
sing the Horst Wessel Song to all
racist? by their fruits shall ye know them
they've been given trillions of dollars to help black people
to educate every person
and the results are? O'diots and a herd of marching voters

MyFather, i will answer you

Unpublished

MyFather, I will answer your post one by one:
1) Yes, they are, rather than see Democrats and a black President succeed.
2)What are the causes of the increase in national debt? How about having to bail out big banks that the Republicans refused to regulate
(Republicans are anti-regulation), the prosecution of a war in Afghanistan that had no end game, a war in Iraq that had no purpose, and was based on pure lies AND had no end game. Having to put government money into the economy in order to make up for employers who would not hire, but chose instead to lay of workers and make those still employed make up for the lost workers. No workers, nobody buying anything, causes depressions, which the DEMOCRAT policies are accepted by most economists as saving us from.
3) You are referring to the Republicans about deficits...after all it was Karl Rove, Bush's adviser who said "Deficits don't matter.
4) Again, WHO was it that started our "good"relations with China? It SURE wasn't a Democrat....unless old Tricky Dick was a closet Dem....
5)SURE! Let's have another Gulf oil spill! Let's continue on our path of destroying the Earth, God knows we need our Suburbans with one driver.
6) See number 2
You guys keep whining and being willing to shut down the government and put us into default. We don't need no stinkin credit rating!

Great letter Mr. Reese. Just

Unpublished

Great letter Mr. Reese. Just as you mentioned, the ACA was one of the president's major causes - it passed. The supreme court upheld it. President Obama kept it as a major point in his re-election campaign and the people spoke in favor of him and his ideals AGAIN. The majority of the country has spoken. They're tired of strangle-hold the insurance and healthcare industries have had on people and want to have insurance. The teapublicans need to stop their mess and get on board or get voted out (which is preferred)

They continue to believe that low information voters will grow a brain, come around, and begin to see the errors of their ways. Sorry, you guys, there is no hope for them, and they will drag us all under, example Obama and his thugg Democrap party.

Lost me at Black

"Yes, they are, rather than see Democrats and a black President succeed."

I quit reading at THAT. It's becoming increasingly obvious that Obamacare is ruining the economy with employers cutting hours and laying off workers. It has to be stopped before our country is destroyed in a socialist euphoric taking from the hard working to give to those not working and not paying for their insurance. Polls show Americans don't want it. Obama knows it won't work and is speaking of revisions like it's a computer program. Really. He is giving waivers to his friends. House of Representatives, do your duty and stop the funding.

Copperhed, What about the

Copperhed, What about the constant increase of give aways by President Obama. That adds to the national debt-Why not decrease the amounts?

I agree about the war. We should just leave them to themselves. They are never going to change in the middle east because they live in centuries past with a stupid religious culture.

Business lays off workers because they cannot keep going with the cost of the regulations, insurance, and other things required. At least some jobs are saved.

Banks loaned out money to people to buy houses they never could afford because of a federal policy that was trying to make people equal and all will never be equal. Some will always be better than others.

Labor costs brought on by unions sure didn't help to keep our manufacturing here. I sure wish it could be returned to the USA.

I sure like my SUV and do not want to ride in a box since I work out of it everyday and need the room for samples even though I am the only one in it all day long.

Sure there are problems on both sides but this country needs to cut back on all spending even if it hurts those with their hand out. They will survive but just not as good as they do now.

Democratic Senate and Budgets

The Senate Democrats haven't submitted a budget since 2009. Obama doesn't even know how to fill out his checkbook much less a budget. Now the Democrats want to talk, but preface talks by saying compromise over Obamacare is not possible. I don't think so.

None of the article is

None of the article is accurate. The ACA wasn't "ratified" by his re-election-that is absurd. The ACA was a bill bullied through Congress by Democrats-Obama didn't write the law. The Tea Party Caucus, though a small minority like the progressive movement, is only representing their constituents too-so they are "ratifying" by their electorate-sheesh. And Andy Reese is just resorting to ad hominem because he has no other argument by saying "they want to kill it because they believe it will help people-just the other way logically--but you have no logic, no argument, just mean spirited comments. The Tea Party constituents believe it will hurt the country. Each side is fighting for what they believe. I guess because progressive are fringe group we can call them radical jihadist too.

Look at Obama 20008 1.3

Look at Obama 20008 1.3 million, then after his first term 11.8 million. He and his Wall Street buddies made out well over the economic meltdown, and he has made sure no one was prosecuted. Now the only person who has prevented the implementation of the ACA is Obama. So he must be responsible for the govt shutdown, because any group that would ask to delay implementation are holding the govt hostage. Good golly.

So the LTE states the American people are who will suffer. Well why does the president always talk about how popular an idea is to help gain public support to pass his legislation. But now he is doing the opposite as the majority of Americans are hesitant of the ACA. The will of the people is re-do the ACA it would seem. I don't get either side-the Senate standing on a law most people hate, then Rep wanting to change the law and getting most people to hate them in the process. Yes all americans lose because both Rep and Dems and progressives and conservatives have lost their freakin' minds.

Socialist = Liberal = Progressive

Socialist = Liberal = Progressive
now that the name change is understood by everybody let me move forward with a comment.

you ask:
"Have you no decency, GOP?" and then admit you are Progressive.

Since we understand "progressive" is name change to avoid all the can't let go of the 60's Geritol Yuppies and/or the Socialists that pushed their agendas while hidden behind the name Liberal.

But for a Progressive/Liberal/Socialist to even use the word "Decency"
is kind of a Oxymoron in itself.

Progressiveism - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressivism

Is this what you want for the USA is this what you can Decency?
"Scientific racism", "Cultural liberalism", " progressive taxation", "Welfare state politics", Political economy" Marxism?

Progressiveism - and its various other names it used is directly responsible for more deaths and genocides that any other 20th century Political party.

That is what you call Decency?
