Is this really King's dream?

  • Follow Letters

Regarding Joseph Diggs Sr.’s letter “King’s dream unrealized” (Sept. 2), let me make sure that he realizes that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. had no dream – he had a nightmare!

Voting should be only for people – white or black – who own land/homes; pay property taxes, school taxes and income taxes; and contribute to the economy, and do not sit on their butts and expect the taxpayers to support them. Freeloaders should have no say-so in what I am expected to pay and support. They are leeches. They should get off their butts and get jobs, support themselves and then vote.

President Obama is a leech himself, and does not represent the majority of taxpaying citizens. The Voting Rights Act was a scheme to buy votes from blacks for the Democrats and circumvent states’ rights – and see what a mess this has caused.

If you want to celebrate the anniversary of Dr. King’s speech then give me the same right to celebrate the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, and have just as much news coverage as this womanizing troublemaker. They were by far greater people than he ever was. If the news media gave half the coverage to the rights and history of whites and Southern heritage as they do blacks, you would hear all kinds of screams of racism. Now who are the racists?

As for Mr. Diggs’ military service that he mentioned, he got paid for it!

As for President George W. Bush and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas not being at the anniversary celebration of the gut-wrenching speech, God bless them.

The editorial does sound

The editorial does sound racist but I think he is making the point of "political correctness". That it is politically incorrect to fly Dixie but it's OK to fly the New Black Panther Party flag. The land of free should tolerate any opinions no matter how offensive some may find it-just like many posters here hate Christianity so they voice their opinions. Political correctness just pushes issues under the rug-we need to get real about discussions. It has done nothing to hinder racism or bigotry.

Voting

I think it would be a step in the right direction to raise the voting age to match the legal drinking age.

I WILL NOT even discuss the racial issue!! I have no facts to back this up other than to point to the math and statistics of common sence.

Being from Minnesota, you should be able to shead some light on another on-going fude we seem to have. Are Canadians treated better than Mexicans? My answer is YES.

The accusation of racism is completely meaningless if you can't point to one single thing about the letter that is racist. Just as meaningless as your claim that Canadians are treated better than Mexicans without even being to say how.

Re: Dr. King's greatness and methods...

He sat in the Birmingham jail and refused every single overture that was made to him. Every one of them, and there were many of them. He was being offered everything he and his supporters were demanding. The only thing being asked of him was that he support a timetable for implementing changes that had a reasonable chance of succeeding. We're not talking years here, and for some things, not even months or weeks. And it was real change not limited to such superficialities like sitting in the back of a bus or separate drinking fountains. It had to do with more substantial things like educational and recreational access and housing equity, medical care and police conduct.

He refused to compromise on anything at all. "Now" was the only word he would accept, even though there was no way that even he, given absolute power, could have made things happen as fast as he was demanding.

The bottom line in Birmingham was that Dr. King wanted not resolution but confrontation and masses of people out in the streets. He wanted to make an example of Birmingham solely to make a point. He wanted the movement to gain momentum from outrage, even as good men of sincere goodwill, considerable means and with a great deal of motivation and power to produce genuine change were trying their best to bring about what he was demanding.

And King refused them. I know this because one of those men sat to my left every morning at breakfast. And all he could do was shake his head at the contradiction between what was being said so eloquently and the reality that was sitting in jail.

You may not like it, but these are facts of history. Red thumb away, but know it is just kicking at the goads.

The ONLY WAY I will discuss racism is if you promise to not "COP-AN-ATTITUDE" about it!! Canadians ARE treated better than Mexicans EVEN if they are day laborers and go back to Mexico when done.

As for you being right "ALL-OF-THE-TIME", I guess my whole existance is meaningless!!

What the heck have you got against Canadians?

I almost can consider myself a Canadian. I have never heard of a Canadian coming into the U.S. and rob, rape and kill anyone plus steel jobs from Americans alone with demanding free crap that all the illegal Mexicans are receiving. 99% of all Canadians enter the U.S. legally and have no other cause but spend there more valuable dollar. Your racist attitude is totally unfounded....Prove me Wrong!

"Your racist attitude is totally unfounded....Prove me Wrong"

I seriously doubt that you can prove my wrong, it is absolutely no way to scientifically detemine this. As for being "racist" toward Canadians, I view it as more of the un-fairness how they are treated as opposed to Mexicans.

The 1% that come to the U.S. for medical treatment that they can receive faster than in Candia is a God given pleasure....but that said, they go back to Canada after paying their medical bill without asking for one dam Red Penny from you or me!

Do Mexicans do that?

The move to free base cocaine

The move to free base cocaine and crack affected every ethnicity and it wasn't any CIA conspiracy but the days of free love, drugs, and peace had long seen better days by the late 70s when it became more criminal and violent. Were both races dealt the same hand in history well no but the Irish were abused when they first arrived too, and since the 60's we have used the Constitution to address this discrimination and end it for all time-at least legally anyways. I think the whole idea of celebrating MLKjr is so we don't forget about past discriminatory practices-least I hope so. Probably a major "gay" figure who fought for their equality will be celebrated too one day-you wanna bet? Then we will have a major hispanic hero too-especially as they rise in population.

Try not to take this the wrong way Tim. What SEEMS to be the case, is that over your life, you have been programed to accept that any dealings that White people have with non-white people, where the non-white people get less than favorable results, it was because the white people were being racist. It's ok....it is the way liberal public schools have intended it.

I think dwelling on "racism"

I think dwelling on "racism" is an ignorant waste of time. There are no races and as soon as we cop that attitude and let the population of Americans compete and do their thing-it's all good. I may one day have a mixed ethnicity grandchild-it's all good. If you think a "race" has a "value" like one better than the other , then you are a racist by definition and should realize that by comparison we should all strive to be asian who seem to be best at about everything.

Unreal

This fascination with Canadians in weird. Illegal Canadians make up less than 3% of the total illegals in this country (according to PEW a few yrs ago). I had the pleasure of spending last week in Canada. Tim is always saying we need the illegals to do the work Americans won't do. Guess what, Canadians do the work in their country.
