It all boils down to safety

  • Follow Letters

In reply to the “Do you see the elephant?” letter Aug. 31: Regarding draws to an area – safety, schools, entertainment, jobs, etc. – the No. 1 item has to be safety. Without this, nothing else succeeds.

Safety/control starts at home, with the family unit. The breakdown of this causes a house of cards to fall.

If the statement by an Augusta commissioner that crime is everywhere and we don’t have a problem – and that is the mind-set of Augusta leadership – then denial rules the day, and urban blight takes over.

Recently I visited Branson, Mo., and saw how a downtown-on-the-river can succeed. It reminded me of Augusta – Riverwalk, without the problems. I recommend the leaders of Augusta contact this city, and find out how it is successfully running its downtown. If what you’re doing isn’t working, seek help from those who have succeeded.

Great Idea Mr. Getha, the problem is that if the ARC Commish. do this they won't be able to pay for another overpriced study!!

They already go on enough

They already go on enough trips to other cities for conventions and other things. They need to stay here and do their job!

You could swap the entire

You could swap the entire county gov with Branson or any other progressive city, and it would not matter much. It would take decades to undo the attitudes of the residents created by the current dysfunction. Due to the mismanagement and waste in the past, most any downtown development plans will be met with no, no, no. Can't say as I blame them.

Branson - 2010: The racial

Branson - 2010: The racial makeup of the city was 89.0% White, 2.0% African American....................

I'm not saying that it HAS to be this way because of our demographics and government structure. I'm just saying that it seems to be the nature of the beast and therefore offers little or no hope of ever improving. Our Commission is totally incapable of doing anything smart. We can't change the population and apparently we cannot change the structure of the government.........stalemate......Detroit.

Give up on it. I have. It will not get any better. It will get worse. If you must stay here then hole up, armor up, protect yourself and your property, do what you can to avoid their taxes and fees. Encourage you family, your grown kids, and your friends to relocate out of this county if possible. Do not invest in any real estate in Richmond County unless you are only interested in owning Section 8 rental property. There is going to be a pretty good demand for Section 8.

Based on the deterioration I have seen in my area in the 17 years since Consolidation, I predict that almost half of the geographic area of the county will be unbearable to live in within another 10 years and the other half will be paying lots of taxes to meet the obligation of all of these bonds we have incurred/are incurring as we speak. Get your family out if possible and move somewhere that you AT LEAST GET SOMETHING FOR YOUR TAXES.
